Talkgroup ID's vs Wildcard

Hello all. I am new to digital scanning, so be gentle but I need input. I am in Ohio and we have the MARCS IP system. I currently have a wildcard object set up, so I am hearing everything. What I want to do is be able to hear only certain local agencies, but retain the wildcard for any foreign agencies that come into our area. I have locked out the agencies I don't want to hear. Now what I am thinking is to create objects with talkgroup IDs for those agencies I want to hear, so when there is traffic I get the hit and an alpha display. I would then l/o those local agencies on the wildcard, so the only thing I should hear on the wildcard are the foreign agencies. Does this sound like the best way to do it, or is there a better way? Do I have to enter separate IP system entries for each talkgroup ID, or can they all be off of one entry? If it needs to be separate entries, please explain to my why. As I said, I am new to this and still trying to learn. Thanks to all for your feedback.

850 mHz Coax Collinear

So I've been trying for some time to get decent signal strength on a 850 mHz trunked P25 system in my area (Rhode Island RISCON). I'm about 30 miles out, and I just can't quite get clear receive. I made a 5 element folded dipole yagi that will get clear receive if I get on my roof with it directly attached to the scanner, but still not enough signal to make it down any length of coax into the shack.

I figured I would try making a coax collinear as described at this link:

Build A 9 dB, 70cm, Collinear Antenna From Coax

I really didn't expect success considering how precise the measurements seemed to be and the amount of connections to be made, but I figured I'd give it a go anyways. I adjusted the measurements from the above link for the 800 mHz band, and actually it wasn't that bad to build.

Once constructed, I headed up to the roof (BTW scanner is a 436HP) and to my surprise, I've improved from one bar on the s-meter to three!!!

But here's the problem... despite much stronger signal strength, when a transmission comes in the decode is much worse than with 1 s meter bar on the yagi, barely readable if at all.

My question is... could poor construction of the collinear (and I admit it was a bit shabby) result in improper phasing of the received signal, causing a garbled RF signal despite the apparent significant increase in signal strength? Or could the omnidirectional gain be causing multipath reception problems?

The antenna outperforms a 1/4 GP when mounted at the same height and through the same coax on the local MA SP trunked system, so I know at least I am getting some gain.

Vertex VX 4207 problem

Hello all,

I recently bought a new Vertex MD-12A8J desktop microphone for my Vertex VX 4207-6-45. I am having a problem with transmitting with the new mic: every time I attempt to transmit with the new microphone, the radio powers off. I hear the PTT sidetone from the installed add on board (VMDE 200), and then the radio shuts off completely. I then must shut down the power supply (which is a Samlex SEC 1223 unit), disconnect the desktop microphone, and reconnect the standard palm mic in order to power the radio back on. The radio transmits fine with the standard palm mic.

One thing to note: when I first plugged the desktop mic in, I was able to transmit once without the radio powering off. I then tried to use the monitor function, which did nothing, as well as the lock switch, which also did nothing. Since then, I have been unable to transmit with the desktop mic.

I am going to try to re-upload the radio's programming file using the software to try to reset the radio's settings. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year to all!

Mike

TK 7180 second mic

We use a 7180 as the station radio and the radio is in the front office. We want to add a second microphone to the back office 100' away. I have a pretty good knowledge of wiring, can someone explain and draw out how I need to wire a jack and adapter for the second mic. I would also need a parts list. My local dealer wants $300 and that is with me running the wire.

Thanks

$105 Streaming Setup - Beginners Guide

If you are using a scanner that does not have a audio line out port and thus you have to use the headphone jack to connect to your computer chances are you have or will experience a very annoying hum when plugged into AC power but mysteriously it goes away on battery power. The quick and easy answer is that the problem is with the audio cord going from the scanner to your computer. A $5 part from Radio Shack will solve your problem instantly. This is the part that I purchased...

6.5-Ft. Attenuating Dubbing Cord with 1/8" Phone Plugs - Radioshack

I posted this because it took me a few hours to figure this out on my own searching the forums and trying a bunch of different options including going to SDR radios and what not. In the end I realized a $5 part would solve all my problems and now I am able to host 3 separate feeds. I hope this post helps a beginner out and saves them some headaches. You do NOT need a ground loop isolator as others have mentioned, this simple cord has fixed 100% of the problems, I hear absolutely no humming anymore.

I'm using the RadioShack PRO-649 scanner which cost $99 to host a CHP frequency since they don't use trunking there was no need to purchase another expensive high end radio.

BCD536HP Display Question

While using my 436HP last night I noticed that when scanning a multisite trunking system and stopped on a talk group, the site name was displayed in smaller letters at the bottom of the Department/Site window. I've never noticed this on the 536HP. Does the 536 just do that and I've never noticed it?

A somewhat related site question. On the XT scanners, I could manually step through the frequencies on a trunk site to check for control channel activity. I haven't been able to do that on the HP scanners. Is that no longer available or do I just not know how to do it on these scanners?

Any Logan County listeners around?

I've been listening to the online feed lately, and there's something different with EMS unit numbers than what I'm used to.

Coupling 2 different coverage antennas to one scanner

I am wanting to combine 2 antennas, one is a wideband multifrequency antenna (more suited to VHF/UHF) and the other one (that I just got) is tuned for 800-900 Mhz, best suited for local trunked public safety systems. This is a mobile application by the way. I do not want to have to run two scanners. I just replaced my 996XT with the 536HP in my vehicle, and want to pull in the trunked systems better than before and still have wide band coverage. I have in the past had a combiner that combined an antenna for shortwave with one for VHF/UHF for a different application but that device obviously doesn't do what I need to do here.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks.

BC355N trunking?

It has been a while since I have owned a scanner, my previous was a PRO95 from Radio Shack. I loved it and was not happy with its failure (after 3 years of dependable use).

I am looking at a BC355N and was wondering if it has the trunking feature (needed in my area) or does it automatically decode the transmissions? I know with the PRO95 there was a trunking code to enter. Or am I better off going back to what I know will work?

Please forgive me for being behind the times with the new scanners, but I have searched and can not find a definite answer. I have even downloaded the manual and can not find any mention of it or a warning of it NOT supporting trunking.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Johnson 5100 for a item I have. I by NO MEANS want this radio to TX on, Just RX ( Like A Scanner ). If i understand right this radio needs a "Key" for it to work? can anyone, in layman's terms tell me what this is or where to get one? Also do I need the "Key" to just RX with it? Like i said I do not wish to transmit with it. If anything else ill go in and disable the PTT switch. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

A crazy scheme

I want to start by saying this is as close as I could figure out to the right place to post this. I apologize in advance if this was the wrong place.

Anyway, I have noticed many people online build their own 12v generators from a small engine and an automotive alternator. I was wondering if anyone thinks there could be a market for something like this. The concept is simple and easy, a cheap motor, a cheap one wire alternator, and either a coupling or belt drive. Of course a framework of some kind to hold it all.

I guess my point is, is anyone going to buy something like that? I can see where perhaps someone who uses a batter and inverter for camping might like it. I plan to use the same idea for after storms and such. What about the radio crowd? Would anyone use something like that to keep a battery pack boosted for their equipment? Maybe to supplement a solar setup? I know it would probably create some electrical noise, but I wouldnt see it as something to be run all the time. Anyway, I guess I just want to know if I am nuts.

Monmouth County 700 MHz Project 25 TRS

OK need your help on this.

It appears that some towns in Monmouth County are beginning to migrate their Police Departments over to the
Monmouth County 700 MHz Project 25 TRS.

Namely;

  • Allentown

  • Colts Neck

  • English Town

  • Matawan

  • Oceanport

As you are aware these towns are in the Law Enforcement talk groups category and thereby communications are unfortunately encrypted.

I am to far north to monitor from my home location.

Therefore, if possible I need monitors in Monmouth County with appropriate software to possibly find and ascertain the actual DEC and HEX info to add to the data base. So far the DB has only Matawan and Colts Neck talk groups.

Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated!

Trevor Baylis awarded CBE

Kudos to Trevor Baylis for being honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

BBC News - Wind-up radio inventor gets New Year Honour

Baylis is best known for designing the windup Baygen radio. Back when, for Radio Netherlands I reviewed this portable that brought radio to the African bush. The receiver itself was a circuit board and the mechanism was a large spring wound by an external crank handle that folded into the case. No batteries required, the radio would operate for hours.

The analog dial left something to be desired, but the receiver did a sufficiently decent job to sort out the stronger broadcasters in the 60, 49, 41 and 31 meter bands. The later consumer iteration was overpriced for the NA and European consumer markets when compared to the available digital portable radios. The Baygen more than fulfilled the purpose of bringing radios to back-country places devoid of commercial power or supplies of batteries.

Performance on Phase P25's Toronto Public Safety

Hello.

I am about 50 km from Toronto, On a good day I was able to scan the older 800 Mgh Toronto Public Safety system from my apartment, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I am wondering if any real can provide us with signal reports on the new TPS system, if I should bother loading it into my PSR800. My concern is, the performance of Phase 2 P25. I sometimes monitor Metrolinx, I am very close to the Waterdown tower and have no problem monitoring rail traffic but this scanner doesn't do a good job on the busses who are using P25 Phase 2. It's a simulcast system and I was told before I purchased it that it really doesn't do a good job on simulcast systems.

I am wondering then if it is worth putting together a scanlist for the new TPS system for the PSR800. I don't really expect much of it here 50 K away but I do go to Toronto often enough and wouldn't mind monitoring it when I am there.

I'm not following the change over much but can anyone here report on if the TPS are using Phase 2 yet and if so how does it come in.

If there isn't any TPS activity on Phase 2 yet perhaps responses can come later to this post.

just got home.stopped at a garage sale. i found this RS pro197, no owners manual, no power supply. no antenna. price tag said $3.00. i gave them a 5 dollar bill, told them to keep the change. i know nothing of this scanner. been listning for years and years. all i have at the present time is a RS bdt396xt and a icom r-75 with a stand alone multi code reader.

on the update window it reads : up bootver:rf1.2

i have a couple ( 4 or 5) questions :

1) what is the highest update number, and what web site do i get them from ?

2) i dont see a usb sockett, so i expect i have to purchase a cable with the multi pin plug, correct ?

3} the missing updates, are they critical to the operation of the scanner ?

4) does "freescan" support the rs pro 197 ?

5) is the scanner worth spending the money on ?

Using the list from the wiki page I believe I have so far:

21xx = Carlton County Sheriffs Office

5xx = Cloquet Police Department

Thomson Twsp. Police Department

Scanlon Police Department

94xx = Fond Du Lac Police Department

Carlton Police Department

Moose Lake Police Department

Does anyone have these already mapped out? Corrections?

In searching for an existing thread on this I came across the following post:

Question about listening to ARMER in Duluth

He mentions a Carlton Law 3 talkgroup, which does not show in the database. He also seems to have the TGIDs backwards for Law 2 and Law 3. Can anyone confirm Law 3 exists? Can you also verify Law 2 is 37102 as listed in the database?

Fayette County Smartnet TRS

As a heads up folks-

I decomissioned/shut down the "old radio system" at Fayette County 911 this morning around 0845.

Had a few issues as there is no orderly way to shut off a Smartnet Trunking system running on a Motorola 6809 Trunking controller

Outage to the new radio system was kept to < 5 minutes while the old system was in failsoft in the process of being powered down.

All traffic is flowing on the ICORRS System for our radio users in Fayette

thumbs up for sprint spark meeting public safety standards and exceeding all of them

after being able to play with spark the advanced LTE tri-band frequency shifting new edition to the Sprint network and built on top of the existing LTE network it gets my thumbs up for beating Verizon and there X LTE network. sponsored by Sprint spark, is the only network operating right next to the public safety 800 megahertz and is able to switch 2 additional frequencies in the 1000 spectrum. it's got six data network redundancies, including abilities to immediately roam to verizon 3g.

I have been getting a reliable continuous data connection with spark and then getting speeds continuously at 30 megabits per second. their network supports VoIP wifi calling and in my opinion is identical to that cockamamie firstnet idea they had. the Spark Network does not require that the device has a good or great signal strength as I get 30 megabits per second at a half a bar.

From Uniden Reguarding the BCD536HP

Despite the lack of visible progress, we have been working to get a releasable app out. I had really hoped to have something we could shove into your stocking for the holidays, but it doesn't look like that will happen. Our estimate for release is to have a V1 iPhone/iPad app (with supporting firmware for the dongle and scanner) by the February time frame. It is possible that before that time I will be able to release an open beta version for you to try at your own risk, but that is not guaranteed. We'll then put a developer onto the Android/Amazon platform, but I do not yet have a development schedule put together for this (and since I use Android/Amazon and not Apple, I'm eager for this, as well). Firmware-wise, our next focus will be to complete the analysis functionality for both the BCD436HP and BCD536HP. Some work has been done on this, but it will take much more to have a release. We expect to release this in the March time frame. As with the app, we might have something to try, sooner. Following that, we will have continuing improvements and enhancements to the app-supporting and other codebase in the scanner that will provide remote access capability (without using a fixed IP address on the scanner...I believe you'll be able to remotely access it in V1 if you know how to put it on a fixed IP), full menu navigation, and more (like f/w and db updates w/o having to use Sentinel). I actually have a firmware development roadmap that goes into 2016 for these models. Not all the deliverables on the roadmap have been approved for development, but I'm pushing to get as much as I can into these models. Despite the release of some other models, I expect these two to be our flagship handheld and mobile platforms for many years. Upon release of the V1 app, I will also release the protocol/API so that 3rd party developers can also work on their own apps for direct access of the scanner w/o a PC. We finally feel like we are not being held hostage by our vendor...we have dongle firmware that appears to be stable, functional, usable...I've run out of 'ables, but seems like there should be more. This has not be our greatest year. That said, we at Uniden cannot nearly apologize enough for the delays in adding this functionality. We know that it has hurt our relationship with you and has eroded your trust in us. We thank you for your patience and understanding (and, believe me, we do understand those of you who have not been quite as patient and understanding). Please enjoy your holidays. Look forward to a great new year. Sincerely, The Entire Uniden Development Team

Bcd436hp vs bcd396xt

i would like to hear from bcd436hp owners how they like the radio over the bcd396xt i read read some they seem pretty much the same for a few differences

Bcd436hp vs bcd396xt

Looking to buy a couple radios.

So this coming new year, once tax season is dead and gone, I am looking to buy a couple radios.

(I deliberately pay extra to prevent owing the government, so I am looking forward to a nice return, but time will tell)

So I am looking at buying either a dual band 2m/70cm rig for the truck, or an HF transceiver for the shack.

First off I am not against used equipment, and not against older equipment.

I was hoping some of you would like to share your input and recommendations.

For the dual band rig, I have been eying either the Yaesu or Kenwood mobile rig. None of the ecolink or D-star really interests me, so these are not required features, buy may be fun to play with from time to time if the price tag doesn't jump too much. I have been scouring ebay looking at used equipment, and a lot of the used rigs go for damn near retail. People just seem to get sucked up in the bidding at the last few hours. The Chinese radios are pretty much none existent in my mind considering I can get a Yaesu or kenwood for $50 more. Had they been half the price they may have been worth looking into, but not at such a high price tag. I had been looking at the Yaesu FT-7900R and the Kenwood KW-TMV71. I kind of like the aesthetics of the kenwood better, but functionality and reliability comes first. I don't need or want much for a mobile rig, CTCSS and DSC, and a little bit of power for when I am out at the lake or driving in rural areas far from the repeaters. Likewise I am not stuck between these two radios and am open to suggestions.

For HF I am looking for something simple. SSB, CW (AM, and FM are a bonus but probably wont get much use) I am more interested in the digital modes controlled with my PCs sound card. I have also been having some good fun with SSTV on 10m. I have been looking at some of the older Kenwood HF rigs such as the TS-530 or TS-120, again open to suggestions.

Thanks everyone -VE4BDE

Weird Issue

Ok so I live in rural coastal Maine but for the life of me I can't figure out why I can't get good reception on any of my shortwave radios. I've tried different antennas and such inside and out to no avail. I do live in a valley of sort would that cause an issue? I'm thinking of getting a Wellbrook but would it be a waste of money if I'm having issues with any antenna I try? Is there something better then a Wellbrook I can build?

real odd noise

Recently, after returning from a trip I reprogrammed my BCD396XT with all of the local analog channels that I monitor with my BCT15X (it actually has better reception than the digital HT with the OEM antennas). Needless to say, I am getting noises that I do not hear on the 15X when listening to any of the talkgroups of the Denton County system.

The Frisco P25 system comes in without issue (and even set to 400ms wait with a threshold of 7 from the default 8) but the DCSO groups pickup 'other' reception - that sounds similar to the noises in the movie 'The Matrix' when you hear what it (the Matrix) sounds like (almost like some weird digital noises in the background of the conversation). I do receive the signals no doubt but with a noise that I can't tell if is some odd interference or what. These systems are on my desk - to either side of my SDR PC and before, I never heard this noise.

If the analog base unit doesn't get anything but a small amount of background noise along with the usual conversations - then does anyone have any idea on what this random constant noise is on these analog channels? If desired - I can record some conversations if you wish to hear the

396xt screeching on distant signals

I have the xt also and I'm getting the same thing in the analog systems it just seems as it's picking up distant signals and making a real annoying screeching noise ... Would be nice to have the issue solved if anyone has any answers thanks happy scanning. Has anyone ever found a cure for this its been 2 years now an still doing the same very annoing seems to be worse when I'm in town near the streetlights for some reason.

Baldwin County 700 Mhz

I've finally got my 436HP programmed correctly for the system. It's more active than it was last time I was down here (July).

I'm hearing more activity on more towers, which is encouraging.

This morning I heard Loxley and Summerdale PDs using Phase II

Also heard County Fire South as P25 Phase I. Some departments seem to refer to that as "Channel 2". That's also cross patched to the VHF frequencies, but reception is better on the trunk.

Medstar and North Baldwin EMS are using Phase II.

Annoyingly, the sheriff still has all channels encrypted.

One thing that I've noticed is that audio seems better on from the dispatch consoles than when processed through the voting system and repeaters.

That's it so far. I'll try to get more listening and logging done.

BCD396XT New BCD 396xt user

I have the Uniden USB-1 scanner Radio interface cable. First off, when Looked at what firmware my radio had installed, it says the latest version version of Firmware and when I am in Freescan - Virtual control - com port settings and hit the "test" button it says: "Freescan has recognized the scanner and is ready to operate with it."

Here are some things I am worried about.

First: When the the scanner is hooked into my laptop through the USB, it does not show up in the usual place where my IPOD or thumb drives would. Is that a problem?

Second: When I get out of Freescan and go back in, I have to reload all of my location info such as state, county, and such. It starts me back at Araaquay or whatever.

From here I go to file- import and choose "from radioreference trunked?" I then sign in (I am a premium member,) and fill out the info. USA- Oregon- Multnomah County- and select "Portland Public radio system MOT type II. I then click none on both sides, and click only the agencies I want right? Oh, and I hit save my home info thing. Okay, so it "skipped 13 channels," dont know what that means. . . but when I go back to the home screen there they all are with their TGID's and stuff. I hit control-s and there it is under file: BCD396xt 12/29/2014.

Now I go to "Upload to scanner?" Hit that little button that looks like a little scanner (by now you should feel the pain in my voice as a salty liquid of defeat drains from my eye sockets,) the "upload to scanner screen" pops up, I check the Erase all systems red button and check all, and then hit start import.

Update: I have it scanning and picking up only one station (Backbone) I still have work to do.

Use SDR for APRS without SDR#?

Hey all,

I'm setting up a couple of new computers here and going to put APRS setups on them. I thought there was a Windows program available that would interface to a SDR stick to allow APRSIS32 to receive directly from the SDR stick, instead of running SDR# constantly (and draining resources doing so) piped into AGWPE/AGWTracker. Has anyone heard of such a thing, or am I mistaken?

Monitoring The Maricopa Police Department

My name is John and I live in Maricopa, Arizona. I used to be able to monitor the Maricopa Police Department (M.P.D.) on my Home Patrol I scanner, but after a power outage, I have been unable to receive the department. Has some setting on the scanner possibly changed as a result of the power outage precluding me from receiving the department, or coincidently, is the department no longer being dispatched by the Buckeye Police Department and relocated to another system? I am VERY frustrated at not being able to listen to my home police agency and would be most appreciative of any help or assistance someone might provide. Thank you in advance!

COIRS - Basic Programming Question

Hello. Just dusted off my old BC296D handheld. Successfully updated my firmware to support rebanding. Just programmed Bank 4 to scan in/around where I live in Dublin, Ohio. I'd like to monitor Dublin Police, Worthington Police, Hilliard Police, and various related fire ids within COIRS Delaware and Franklin counties.

So far, I have programmed into Bank 4 only the Franklin County frequencies (both primary, alternative, and all the other frequencies within Franklin County. I've successfully heard from examples of what I mentioned in the prior paragraph.

Question - can I (and should I) also program in all the Delaware county frequencies? Or would it be best to program those into another bank? I just don't want to miss anything as I program in more ids. I'm obviously confused as the system is divided into two counties.

Finally, I set up my Bank 4 as "Motorola Type 2 Custom" using the rebanding table settings documented for my BC296D. This would be the correct, right?

Thanks very much.

Raspberry Pi Memory Leak?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes:

I recently changed my scanner feed over to a Raspberry Pi. I set up darkice, and TwoToneDetect, but it would only run for about 12 hours before the CPU useage would creep up to 100% and then crash.

I thought I had fixed the issue just by deleting TTD. It was only a "nice to have" anyway.

Darkice ran for about a month without issues, and all of a sudden I get an email saying my scanner feed is down. When I look at the PI, the CPU useage is maxed out. So I restart the pi, restart darkice, everything is happy, CPU useage is down, but it slowly creeps up, and eventually maxes out again.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Control Channel Question

Hey all,

There are some new P25 systems in the area and I am trying to map them all using my 996. I did a custom search for the 140-150 range but the scanner stops on none of the control channels. My handheld scanner I heard the CC sounds but the 996 never stops. Also there is a new P25 system I just programmed in P25 Standard Trunk and if I hold on that system on the CC there is no sound. If I goto another system and hold on the CC I hear the CC sounds on the scanner.

Do I have something turned on/off I should have?

BCT15X - All the important keys stopped working

Hi Folks,

I'm new to scanners and just got the BCT15x for Christmas. I accomplished a very basic setup to scan my State of Maine and turned down the awful alert volume level. It worked great for a whole day. I turned it on the next day and none of the buttons work...I cannot access "menu" or even turn on/off the "PL" of "HP" "BT". I also cannot use the "scan/search" or "hold/resume".

I thought perhaps I locked myself out but "Key Safe" mode is "off". I've tried everything -- even resetting it to factory defaults. No biggie as I barely had changed anything.

I'm wondering if it's broken and I should return it? Any ideas on what I can do to get the buttons working again?

BCD396XT Speaker Problem

Hi there. I recently bought another BCD396XT off eBay to add to my collection. I have another exact same one here with me. works great. This one arrived and immediatly I knew there was a problem because they audio was crap. It sounded like the speaker was blown as it was very low audio, sounded "mono" if that makes any sense and when turned up so I could hear it, all it did was vibrate the speaker from being up so loud but the audio was still distorted. Convinced the speaker was blown, I bought a replacement from 123 Radios and had a local technician install it but much to my disappointment, it was the exact same. I gave them the benifit of the doubt that maybe I got a bad speaker. I had them send me a replacement free of charge (great company to deal with by the way) It arrived, we repeated the process very carefully, even testing the speaker with an oHm meeter first and yet...exact same problem. I can sit it right beside my other XT and the audio is night and day. There is no other obvious damage on the machine and the inside looks great. Does anyone have any ideas? I am at a loss.

when plugging an external speaker into the headphone jack the audio is crystal clear with no problem. I have inserted the speaker jack multiple times thinking maybe that was causing some sort of problem but it hassnt helped.

Has anyone else had this issue?

The only thing I can think of now is that the box the speaker came in said "replacement speaker for 396T" and not 396XT. Are they different speakers? I cant see how they would be different, exact same machine with a few technical differences.

Please help!

Scanner reception problems while broadcasting

I'm using a Uniden BCD536HP. I'm able to pick up fine when I don't have the scanner connected to my computer with audio cables. However, when I do connect to my computer to broadcast, I'm not able to pick up hardly anything.

I'm thinking it's a power supply ground issue or something along that line. Any suggestions?

MSP on RS PRO 651

Hi,

I am a newbie at this and am having difficulty getting my RS PRO 651 to pick up the MA state police (MSP). Have read that the 651 is a newer version of the RS PRO 106. The signal strength bars appear to be picking up signals but I do not hear anything, not sure what that means. I am thinking that it is a set up issue, aka user issue. Does anyone know if the RS PRO 651 can pick and the MSP transmissions? Is so, what is needed to get it to work as far as freq and talk group ID's.

I think I am having problems with trunking systems as the conventional ones i loaded are working fine. I have been using ARC500 1.18 with the connection to RR to program the radio. I have selected what I thought the correct trunk systems in RR as the proper frequencies appear in ARC500. I selected he talk groups for troop H, troop A and troop F from RR as well.. The data was imported into ARC500 and then uploaded to the radio. However I hear nothing. I have been messing around with different settings but nothing has worked.

Any help would be appreciated.

Monmouth County Car gone silent

It appears that Allentown & Englishtown PD have made the change over to the new M/C 700 system on Christmas. The M/C Car channel 154.875/151.4 has been silent except for 2 calls out that went unanswered and the cars now have new 2" 1/4 wave antennas along with the 16" VHF antennas.

Anyone have any information?

Allen County DB Update

I've been going through the Ohio DB doing some year end housekeeping, and what not. For Allen County we need to know the status of the 800 MHz Fire TACs that are listed. Those frequencies should no longer be valid now that 800 MHz rebanding has been long completed.

866.17500 M CSQ FG-1 County fireground (used as needed) FM Fire-Tac

866.53750 M CSQ FG-2 County fireground (used as needed) FM Fire-Tac

867.31250 M CSQ FG-3 County fireground (used as needed) FM Fire-Tac

868.31250 M CSQ FG-4 County fireground (used as needed) FM Fire-Tac

868.57500 M CSQ FG-5 County fireground (used as needed) FM Fire-Tac

Can anyone advise the use of these? Have they shifted 15 MHz lower?

Thanks all for helping keep the Ohio section of the database the most accurate.

missing reception

hello everybody hope you enjoy the holidays I'm just wondering I have a BCD 396 XT and I'm wondering if there's any settings on this that could improve reception, this time last year I was picking up frequencies that are about 10 miles away and this year I don't seem to be picking them up at all not sure if I have just turned something on or off these signals were distance but I was getting them and they were quite clear just in one corner of the house but this year the radio in the same place and I'm not getting them at all unless I'm just about in that city .

Data applications with DMR, NXDN, etc.

Hi Folks,

I was wondering if there are any data solutions/applications available for hams/EMCOMM purposes to pass data from terminal to terminal. Things like disaster reports, pictures, or FLDIGI in an CERT or ARES/RACES environment. I've used D-RATS on D*, but was wondering if there is anything for TRBO/DMR, etc.

Thanks,

Scanner interference help needed

I have a Uniden 996 BCD996T. I'm in central Oklahoma and pick up frequencies in the 208.000 - 209.000 range that breaks my squelch even when it's turned up all the way. No voice or tones just static, any idea's what it is or how to stop it, maybe using some type of filter ?

I have my scanner on my computer desk probably 2 ft. from my computer monitor and tower, could that be a possible source of my interference? Is it a good practice to have my scanner NOT near my computer or other electronics ? Thanks for any help with this

Scan speed on 536HP vs signal strength

I just noticed something very unusual on both of my 536HPs. Tonight, just for the fun of it, I decided to run only the stock antenna on both and see what I could pick up. I compared this with a Diamond RH77CA antenna on both (using 90 degree connectors). I set my FLs for stronger local stations here, including LAPD (P25 conventional), LA Sheriff, CHP, and other local LE (Whittier, Downey, Long Beach).

Although the RH77CA was better, I noticed that as both scanners passed through the LAPD conventional P25 system using either the stock or RH77CA antennas, they seemed to hang up specifically on the P25 system for about 4-5 secs on each department, then would scan the other analog systems fine. They repeatedly would hang up when scanning through LAPD P25. My hold times are set to 0 sec on all systems.

Now, when I put myoutside antennas on, with obviously stronger signal levels, there is no hang-up on the LAPD P25, scanning speed seems to be fine, Just whizzes through the LAPD system fine with no hang up, the same as other analog systems. I replicated this behavior on both of my 536HPs.

I bring this issue up because I know some have mentioned slower scanning speeds with the x36HPs. From my inadvertent findings tonight, this seems like it may be related to signal input level. Why is this happening? There is no P25 waiting time, as there is for a Motorola combined digital/analog system, so this should not be an issue.

It seems that with weaker signal input, the scanner is hanging onto to the P25 conventional channels searching for something. Is this typical behavior for a scanner, or have I inadvertently found something unusual. Any advice is appreciated.

FreeScan to Sentinel - 996xp to 536hp?

Is there a way to export the csv file from FreeScan and import in to Sentinel? I see Sentinel comes with the 536hp and FreeScan, as far as I have found, will not be compatible with that model. Feasability of HF digital voice on a net

There is a net that is coming back to life on HF this january hopefully. In discussions someone broached the idea of those unable to connect via conventional means to participate via Skype or Echolink. First to be able to hear a 40 meter net is one thing. To share in that net without HF gear is another animal all together. I know the issues involved. Is it possible? I am thinking brighter minds could come up with a digital mode or create on that maybe uses some sort of method to translate a digital signal to narrow adio and back again to the recieving end. Even if no one could transmit it would be great to listen to the net via Echolink by using the audio coming from an HF rig into a sysop user link conference or has this ever been tried before?

OH-6/Hughs 500 and Heli freqs for DC area

Hi all and Happy Holidays

Friday I saw what looked like a Loach (OH-6) flying real low and towards the I-95 Springfield corridor past my QTH. It was dark forest green and had some sort of colored triangle marking on the side. I know the FF cnty PD has a Helo, the USPP have their Bell etc. I see plenty of Blackhawks since I live near Ft. Belvoir but this is a first. It just zipped by at like 600 feet. I would like and ID if possible. Some say PG PD has a Hughes 500 but don't think they would be this side of the Potomac. Does anyone have a comprehensive listing including users for Helo's in the DC area? I am familiar with the HMX flights to and from places by "White Tops" some or most coming from Quantico but this guy was weird to see.

OPP beat repeater still active?

Disclaimer: I may as well be entirely new to scanning for as long as I've been away from it. Feel free to tell me I know not what I do.

I'm completely open to the idea that I'm out of range of this repeater, but I'm listening to the OPP on Fleetnet courtesy someone else's scanner and am wondering if the beat repeater in this area's been taken down or has had its frequency changed. Lotsa underground radio this weekend

Just took at 2-day vacation doing some hamming along the Blue Ridge Parkway & Afton Mountain--but also some scanning. All sorts of fun things out there with deer season in full swing.

Crazy big use of marine radios. Hunters using Ch 10, 11, 68, 71 & 72 in Nelson Co. Hunters in Northumberland County asked (presumably by VMRC) to get off of Ch-17 because it was exclusively for law enforcement. Two minutes later a request by the Coast Guard for them to 'clear their traffic' from Ch-16. (gotta love those mountain tops!)

Heard 145.125 in use along the Nelson/Buckingham line near Norwood & Wingina, and on Coast Guard-only marine channels including 157.125, 157.15 & 157.075 in the vicinity of Scottsville & Howardsville. Can't remember those channel numbers, but maybe the users think that numbers up in the 80's are safe, unused territory.

Now you'd think that with five freqs and 38 tones of MURS available, no one would need to go there. But MURS is very busy in that part of the state. Constant, brief digital bursts on all 5 MURS channels made it impossible to monitor them because they kept locking up the scanner.

If anyone does 2m packet in the greater Charlottesville/Lynchburg corridor, I'd love to know if you can get anything from these transmissions on 154.57, 154.600, 151.82, 151.88 and I think 151.94.

In other news 155.6175 [$200] parallels 155.865 [167.9] in Nelson County. Input to 151.37 [127.3] Buckingham sheriff is 153.7625.

Low and behold my aunt presented me with this radio in the box.never opened. She said my passed away uncle hand intended to set up a base station years ago but never got away from his mobile activity. It appears to have been peaked and tuned.Over the the back case there are two seals saying removing will void warranty from "CB CITY" along with a technical certificate in the box concerning the upgrades. Also there was an Antron 99 Base Station CB Antenna still packaged.I am familiar with an antron, low priced but capable antenna.Doing a web search this appears to be a fairly high end quality piece. We mated it with a Wilson 1000 sitting on a mettle roofed pole barn.Got a 1:2 swr and amazingly called CQ and had a great QSO with a trucker about 45MI away,During QSO.He praised the audio quality as pristine even with an S-5 signal. We were transmitting showing 22-24 SSB watts so it wasn't stock QRP power.I'm a HF utility/military/areo/,digitlal monitor hobbyist but have listened a lot over the years on the R75 to 38 LSB and the like.Thought I might dip my hand in the water strictly QRP.Anyone have experience with this rig,any tips would be appreciated with the ins and outs of this aspect of the hobby.I'm not a local type CBer by nature.thanks

BC75XLT Explanation of scanner limitations?

I was given this scanner as a gift, and know just enough about it to know I will probably need to learn a heck of a lot more to be useful. It's been a number of years since I've done anything with regards scanning, but I've tried to keep an eye on the industry nonetheless.

One thing I'm curious about is what exactly the difference is between FM and FMN, and does this scanner support the latter? I'm in Renfrew County presently, and I see quite a few channels that are FMN rather than FM.

Additionally, I'm a little confused on what exactly the 'type' field is supposed to serve as. What are M, RM, BM etc supposed to be? As said I'm just a little bit out of my depth after being away from scanning for too many years. Thanks for reading and please don't mock the newcomer too harshly.

Monroe County Harris System

Hello,

I have a radio shack Pro-197 programmed with the Monroe County Harris frequencies. Reception is hit or miss, sometimes it sounds good or its real bad as the signal switches between towers. I am wondering if a newer phase 2 radio will work better? I know the system is still phase 1, I just want the radio to sound better. what does everybody use and how does it work. I am monitoring the East Side.

Impressed with a PRO-650

If you check around eBay, you can see there is a seller "blinq" that often has Radio Shack scanners for much cheaper than in store. I saw a PRO-650 for $37 w/free shipping, which is $109 in the store. Do I need another scanner? No- but for that price, I couldn't say no. The PRO-650 is a follow up to the PRO-405 and GRE PSR-200. It is 200 conventional channels, no tones nor alpha tags. I took it out of the box and ran it with the stock telescoping antenna. It was picking up towns on VHF that were 20-30 miles away! The display is huge, and it even has an S-Meter! It also has the pre-programmed service searches, and a VFO/Tune button. It searches quick and scans quick too. For being a basic scanner, I feel it performs amazing for the price. If you can get one for $40-grab it!

460 MHz Interference?

Okay, so I wanted to post this here as it is not related to my specific antenna or a particular frequency. I am getting what appears to be severe attenuation on the 450-512 MHz band. I live in Toms River, NJ and my local EMS is on 460.625 and it comes in with static. The next town over has frequencies in the 453 range, and they barely make it here. I have narrowed it down to the 450 & 460 MHz range severely, and the 500 MHz range is slightly static-y. I have duplicated this scenario with my attic-mounted antenna, a handheld rubber duck, and a base with the stock telescoping antenna. Is there something that could be causing this like block on this frequency range? I live more than 30 miles from any TV transmitters, and more than 5 miles from the nearest FM station- and it is on 91.1. This is recent- as I used to get a control channel on 460.500, which is about 10-15 miles away- and now nothing. Any suggestions?
