American Electric Power, Rockport In. Upgrades

I had the chance to talk to a A.E.P. Radio Tech. who is working in the radio house (shack) for the Rockport site. They are in progress of changing out their 800 MHz analog system to a Motorola 400 Mhz digital system. What I did learn is startup for the new pollution control systems start up will have three channels on the new system.

And Motorola is giving Huge discounts to companies to buy double their needed channels. A.E.P. Rockport bought a 16 channel system, with 8 expected use.

Tech is using extra channels to give control rooms radio control of site alarms, and using good condition 400 MHz base radios as triggers for area Tornado alarm triggers for the 6000 acres.

another neat thing is he used the 800 Mhz antennas retuned for 400 Mhz.

Coverage should increase due to doing away with antennas between the two units that had interference issues with the metal siding of the units.

I was trying to talk him out off the 800 Mhz transmitters and amps and cabinets, as scrap, but no luck.

BCD536HP Not Recording WAV files in Trunking Discovery Mode

I've noticed that when I have Trunking Discovery Mode setup on the local P25 system, and I compare it to the database, I see hits, but no audio is recorded.

When I set the radio not to compare to the database, it is a crap shoot. Sometimes I will see a hit, with the UID/TGID and a WAV file, and sometimes I get a log that shows the audio was 0 sec long with no WAV file.

I know the radio is receiving the audio, I'm listening to it and watching the screen. But somewhere, somehow, the audio is not being archived to the SD Card.

My BCD436HP only had this issue when comparing to the DB was turned on.

Any thoughts on how to get the scanner to record every transmission while in trunking discovery mode? I believe this is a bug because I can setup the system and transmitter site multiple times with the same results.

Here is the system I am 'discovering' Nassau County Public Safety P25 Trunking System, Nassau County, New York - Scanner Frequencies I know there are encrypted talk groups on there. I'm not interested in those. I'm trying to log only the Unencrypted groups. Like I said, I can hear them coming over the speaker, and see the activity on the display. There just isn't any wav files to refer back to.

Thanks

VHF/UHF RG-58/RG-6

long story short here, everything ive ever seen online says 2way radios should have rg-58 used in the antenna system because its a 50 ohm cable and it matches better to the radio. but i was wondering if rg-6 can be used for an antenna for transmitting with. ive seen yes and no answers online and cant decide which to definitively use. id like to get a 1,000 ft spool for installs and dont want to buy it if i cant use it.

PA - Supreme Court: PA cops no longer need a warrant to search citizens’ vehicles

"Pennsylvania police officers no longer need a warrant to search a citizen’s vehicle, according to a recent state Supreme Court opinion. The high court’s opinion, released Tuesday, is being called a drastic change in citizens’ rights and police powers. Previously, citizens could refuse an officer’s request to search a vehicle. In most cases, the officer would then need a warrant — signed by a judge — to conduct the search... Now, based on the opinion, it only takes reasonable probable cause for an officer to go ahead with a search without a warrant." - LancasterOnline.com

Station Master Antenna Advise

I have a Phelps Dodge VHF Super Station Master antenna. I want to put a new fresh coat of white paint on this antenna. I read on an older 2011 post that i could go to a marine supply store and purchase a "fiberglass gel coat repair paint & recover sleeve".

Question:

1) What brand do i ask for?

2) How much appx do i need to purchase for this style of antenna?

3) Appx just around a ball park area how much money do you think this cost?

Unidentified Frequencies - possible Vermont?

Hello all,

I took a day trip on 4/22/14 to Lake George. While there, I brought my BCD396XT receiver and A/S MON-31 mobile antenna and did some searching around. I came across several frequencies I haven't been able to identify. There are a couple that I believe may be Vermont based, so I wanted to share them to see if anyone could assist in identifying these frequencies. Any info would be great...

159.165 DCS 134 - repeater output - the conversation didn't include unit numbers, however, they were using terminology similar to VAOT units. A license search shows a repeater on Mt. Philo in Charlotte for this channel, so I was wondering if District 5 uses this frequency now, or is this a special use channel?

155.310 CTCSS 203.5 - simplex, truck to truck - these were highway department vehicles talking back and forth. No locations or unit numbers given. There is a highway department in Saratoga County NY that uses 155.310 however I have them logged in using a DCS code. A license search shows the Town of Danby in Rutland County has recently obtained a license on this channel; wasn't sure if anyone in the group from that area could confirm this was them.

Again, thanks for any and all assistance!

I'm looking for a map, or multiple maps that shows all if the Southern California fire stations and their numbers. Broken down by counties would be great.

More features/changes for the X36

1. (At least an option to) display the activity CC and/or voice frequency.

2. Change the knob on top to be default of adjust volume (tedious to adjust the volume after pressing the knob down first - particularly when driving). IF this can't be done, provide a key sequence like 4/6 to adjust the volume.

3. Allow replay of recordings directly from the REPLAY is enabled even when USER RECORDING is active. Instead of blocking replay, take the user to the review recordings menu.

4. Find a spot to display the currently active SITE on the 536 display like it displays on the 436.

5. Provide an option to review/display the systems/site/departments and their on/off status (not with **** but a list with names).

6. Provide a way to enable ALL systems/sites/departments at the same time. I'll back off from there. Right now, it's really hard to determine what is on and what is not.

Hamilton County/ Cincinnati Area

I own a Pro 96 Scanner and live on the east side of Cincinnati. I was wondering how local listeners have the Hamilton County & Cincinnati system programmed into their scanners. Hamilton County is a larger system with all of the local and municipal agencies. Both systems are included in the data base in the same area. I realize each system has different control frequencies and such. Is it easier to just lump both systems together or is there a way you can separate Cincinnati PD and FD from the county agencies. I'm just looking for input. Thanks.

BCD436HP Time setting freezes radio.

Apparently, the internal battery forbtue date/time only charges when the scanner is on. If i leave it sitting for a few days, the internal battery discharges, and i'm met with the time setting nonsense when i go to use the radio. Here's the technical issue (besides the poorly designed backup battery charging): when i set the time, I receive the "processing...please wait" screen, but the radio freezes on that screen. I have to remove a battery to turn the radio off. When I turn the radio back on, the date is Jan 1, and the time is 0:00, but the radio works fine.

Is this a glitch, or something that should be sent in to rectify?

Kansas Dirt Track Race Frequencies

We have several dirt tracks in Central and Western Kansas. I have been able to locate a few of the track offical's frequencies using the FCC database. I can't seem to locate any frequencies for the Dodge City Raceway Park. I attended the World of Outlaws race there last year and by "searching" I was able to find a couple of frequencies. The scanner I used for that search is no longer working so I've lost those frequencies. Now, when I do a search in the FCC database, there is nothing listed for the Dodge City Raceway Park. Does anyone happen to have those frequencies, or know how to obtain them? Google hasn't helped at all.

Thanks!

436 usb cable connectng

If you're going to use the sentinel software do you have to load any drivers the first time you connect the scanner to a computer, or does the computer recognize it as a mass storage device and no drivers are needed?

How did you as a first time user prefer to program the scanner, zip code maybe?

USFS North GA Repeater Locations

I have been listening to a USFS freq 168.775 here in Carnesville GA for a few months now . It said on the RF data base that this Freq is coming out of Blairsville GA but I have just heard some chatter on a Brass Town Bald Repeater.

Does any body know where all of the Chattahoochee National Forest USFS repeaters are located at? And how many are they using?

The scanner feed that I am streaming has this Freq in the scan list if any one wants to listen. USFS is generally not that busy tho.

1Tac05 Channel for OPP

Tonight I was listening to the Nottawasaga/Dufferin OPP and the Dispatcher came on and asked all officers to change their radio to channel 1tac05. The dispatcher went on to say that their status buttons and 10-78 buttons wont work everything has to be done old school through voice.

Does anybody know what frequency this would be? I haven't heard anything on the Nottawasaga/Dufferin OPP Freq since this transmission. My big problem is I don't have a digital scanner.

Thanks in advance.

Ok found out 1Tac05 is a Digital Tac Channel why would they switch to this?

Metro Richmond/Central Virginia Scanner Listeners: ENCRYPTION IS COMING

I know it’s the one phrase that we as hobbyist dread hearing especially if it’s coming to our area. The unfortunate thing is that I have stumbled upon evidence that the Metro Richmond/Central Virginia area is going to become encrypted with in the next few years. I was reading the 2015 Hanover County Proposed Budget Capital Improvement Program Plan. I saw this on page 242 (excerpt):

Description:

Radio Subscriber Lifecycle Replacements - Portable Radios for Public Safety Users will be replaced beginning in FY15 and continue thru FY18. The XTS 5000 radio product is the Primary portable radio in use by Hanover public safety agencies and 700 portable radios require replacement. Additionally, regional police agencies (including Hanover) have agreed to encrypt all law enforcement talk groups in FY18, which will require Hanover to replace 320 Sheriff's Office mobile radios. General government agencies will begin radio replacement in FY18-FY19

While I am big supporter of encryption for channels/talk groups that are information/officer safety sensitive such as SWAT, Vice, Narcotics, Hostage Negotiations, Executive Protection, Surveillance etc..... I am not a supporter of encryption of routine channels/talk groups such as Dispatch (Main Ops), Car to Car (Tac) Service (VCIN/NCIC) Non Emergency Traffic etc....., Animal Control etc.....

I would highly suggest hobbyists get involve with the town, city, county government that they live in and the Capital Region Communications Steering Committee and tell them that you oppose encrypting routine channels and keep how they have the channels/talk groups now when they put these new multi-million dollar digital trunked emergency radio communication systems in. Most of the localities are in the "Needs Assessment" phase of replacing aging emergency radio communication systems. I’m not going to get in why it’s a good idea not to encrypt routine channels because we all know the reasons. Enjoy listening because we might not be able to in the next few years.

Summit County Jail frequency's?

I've listened to the frequencies in the database for the summit county jail and i never hear anything are they low transmit power?Or did they move to the trunked system?

4-22-14 Warren County - Unidentifieds

Back on Tuesday 4/22/14 I took a day trip to Warren County and brought my receiver with me. I picked two spots to listen at; the first was at the Walmart in Queensbury and the second was the parking area just off I-87 exit 22 outside of Lake George Village. I'm looking for any assistance in helping identify some of these frequencies I came across...

Receiver - Uniden BCD396XT

Antenna - an older A/S MON-31 magnetic mount

154.540 CTCSS 88.5 - simplex, part of a drive thru window system (didn't bother listening long enough to find out which store) - Queensbury location only

155.085 CTCSS 218.1 - repeater output - I believe this is the BOCES repeater for the area. I get a lot of different CTCSS tone hits but never any actual conversations; it was the same thing this time

155.310 CTCSS 203.5 - simplex, very weak from the Lake George site only, sounded like highway crews talking

159.165 DCS 134 - repeater output - heard from the Lake George site only - it sounded like Vermont AOT crews. I thought they were primarily on 159.180 and 159.195. Any info would be great for this one...

160.110 CTCSS 100.0 - simplex, not a lot of good info heard but a strong signal in Queensbury

453.450 CTCSS 94.8 - repeater output and strong signal - highway crews?

463.1125 DCS 223 - constant carrier - heard from both locations. Sat on it for several minutes but never heard any audio.

463.375 CTCSS 118.8 - repeater output - garbage trucks in Vermont?

467.875 CTCSS 192.8 - simplex, sounded like a store operation (Queensbury location only)

An interesting one...

154.860 CTCSS 167.9 - very strong from the Lake George site. It sounded like a simulcast of the WCSO 154.725 traffic. I know this is a car to car or tactical channel for the WCSO but with a CTCSS tone of 110.9, so I'm not exactly sure what I was hearing, whether it was an image of that or a special base station / relay set up in Lake George?

100% newbie - Can I program frequencies into an HT750 and what is needed?

Hopefully I got this in the right forum.

We use a set of HT750's (16 channel) and a couple HT1000's at my work location and I recently received an additional HT750 from another building. This new HT750 does not work with any of our frequencies and I'm thinking it is programmed for the other building's frequencies.

Is it possible for me to reprogram this myself or would it have to be sent in to someone? I'm willing to buy a cable to connect it to the computer if I can find one reasonably priced (quick eBay searched showed some that may work in the $20 range) but based on one of the stickies I'm also thinking I need to buy some software to go with this.

Does that sound correct? If so, can anyone tell me which cable I should be purchasing and what software I would need to buy?

My work location has a designated call sign and radio station authorization from the FCC as well as a list of frequencies, I'm hoping I can handle this myself as opposed to sending in the radio to our repair facility because sending in for repair/reprogramming typically takes a few weeks to make it's way back to me and I'd like to get this unit running ASAP.

So, my other question to go along with "what do I need?" is: Is it worth for me to buy these items? If I buy the cable and whatever software is needed, will I be able to reprogram this myself? How difficult would it be to program in some frequencies for different channels and what type of knowledge would I need?

Thanks for any info or help you guys can provide.

Any Columbus area TRBO users?

How to transfer 396XT/996XT files to a 536HP

Hello,

I have a 396XT and 996XT containing the identical programming file information. I am getting the new model 536HP and want to automatically (versus hand entry) transfer the programming from one of my existing scanners (396XT or 996XT) to the new 536HP. The software I have for the two existing scanners is FreeScan but I read it will not be supporting the 536HP.

I have spent time searching the Forum and have seen this question asked among other threads, but not clearly answered. I have read statements saying it can be done with the Home Patrol, but I do not have one of those units.

My questions:

1) Can the 396XT/996XT programming files be transferred to the new 546HP in some automated way?

2) If so, could someone either point to a link describing the process or provide some form of explanation on how to do it.

.

The best I can tell, the old and new structures look basically the same with channels or talk groups within groups (now called departments), which are within Systems. What looks new to me is a new top layer called Favorites.

I suspect a good part of the market for the new scanner is people like me having decoding issues with the older products and hoping the new unit will do a better job. If that is the case, then there should be many users like me that want a relatively quick way to program the new scanner with the custom data that took years to build with the old scanners. I keep thinking there should already be something out there describing what I want to do, but I can not find it.

Thanks for any help.

Trip to Asheville Area

Hello all

I will be traveling to the Asheville area soon. I will be bringing my HP-1 scanner with me.

A couple questions:

How much activity is on the Buncombe County 700MHz System? Is it better to just listen to the Conventional frequencies listed in the database for Buncombe County?

Is it worth listening to VIPER that way? Who and what is active that way on VIPER?

I assume the Asheville Public Safety 800MHz system would be best for activity in the Asheville area?

Is there a lot of activity on the Great Smokey Mountains NPS and Blue Ridge Parkway frequencies listed in the database? More activity on the digital or analog frequencies? Any use of encryption?

Thanks for the help!

Does Anybody Prefer...

Does anybody honestly prefer the Pro-106/197 over the BCD396XT/996XT? I bought a Pro-106 as soon as it came out five or six years ago. I thought it was a pretty good scanner for a year or two. However, everything started failing on it- buttons fell out, display went bad, and sometimes you have to tap the radio for the radio to actually receive RF. Last summer I finally bought a 996XT and I can't believe how much better built and designed it is. I can make a huge list of why I think the 396/996XT series is better, but I want to hear from you.

Chester County Wiki

Hello All,

After finally updating my scanner records for Chester County a new section with frequencies has been added to the Chester County wiki titled licensed but unconfirmed frequencies just like I did with Montgomery County. I invite everyone to check it out, submit some knowledge if you have it and maybe give some of them a listen. Everything unconfirmed is going to go into my scanner for listening. There is a half dozen new 700 MHz licenses as well but that is so vast and still so experimental I'm really not worried about them yet so they are not on the list.

11 meter (CB) channels on Pro-163?

In looking through the specs on my Pro-163, it seems to cover the CB band (26.965 through 27.405), and the available modes include AM, so for grins I tried to program the CB Frequencies into the scanner...

Arc-300, which I use to program it, doesn't allow the last 5. If I put in 26.965, for instance, it automatically changes it to 26.960... Same as every other CB Frequency... Is this a limitation of the ARC-300 software, or is the software reflecting what the scanner is capable of? I've never tried to program this scanner from the face, always through the software...

Has anyone successfully programmed the proper CB Frequencies into this scanner?

BCDx36HP Private calls on a P25 non-Motorola system

Do any Uniden scanners (even a new one like the BCD436HP) understand private calls/individual calls/I-calls on a P25 digital system that's not from Motorola?

The issue was previously raised in this thread:

http://ift.tt/1fo6sfh

And I can confirm that a RadioShack Pro 197 picks up the calls fine (the scanner is currently connected to Win500, but I don't think that makes a difference).

Besides that issue, I do kind of like Uniden better.

Home Patrol 1 Extreme version - out of box?

I am looking at upgrading to either one of the new Uniden digital and I am torn between the new ones and the Home Patrol 1. The thing that is drawing me to the Home Patrol 1 is the 'extreme upgrade'. This has features that I can use for my work but if I have to buy the scanner as well as the upgrade I would not be to happy.

Therefore, does anybody know if the Home Patrol 1 comes standard now with the features that are in the 'extreme upgrade'?

Thanks in advance to any insight!

M/A COM Tri-chemistry rapid charger

Hi,

I just bought some brand new 2700mah NiMH battery packs and I have the REV D Tri-chemistry rapid charger.

Isn't the charger supposed to charge discharge cycle 3 times before the battery is ready to use if it's new?

The charger just went straight into rapid charge then top off and completed the charge, but nothing else.I put the battery back in and it doesn't discharge it.It's in rapid charge mode again with the battery.

Is this normal?

Cobra 148 nw st repair/ trouble shooting

Picked up my first cb radio today used off Craigslist owner said it works great!

The channel number light up and so does the meter but not the faceplate like I think it should, also the meter never moves on transmit or receive , I did read the Manuel online n played with all the switches but no meter movement

I did hear one distant transmission on channel 19 but no replies to my radio check calls

Anyone know where to find documents on how to trouble shoot or repair the meter and backlight? I am no radio repair expert and looking for some guidance on where to start looking to learn more about poking around inside the radio.

The price I paid for the radio was 25.00 usd

Thanks!

His cheaper Nascar scanner is working perfect. Nothing works on this. I am just trying to get Jo Daviess, Il for him. Can someone please tell me what I need to do for it to work right? I am so frustrated spent a lot of money and can not use it.

Train Derailment Peoria County

Listen to all GMRS / FRS on Wouxon

I just got my first radio, a Wouxun KG-UV6X.

The primary purpose for purchasing it is I wanted my own radio, rather then using unit radios when I am out with my Search and Rescue team.

I have it programmed and it's up and running fine on our SAR frequencies. I even have all of the GMRS and FRS channels programmed in and that works fine and I even understand how to put in the privacy tones so that I can program in a GMRS / FRS channel with privacy code.

So now for the million dollar question:

Is it possible to make it so that I can program the FRS / GMRS to hear all privacy codes?

For example I have FRS channel 9 programmed in. If someone talks on FRS channel 9 I hear that no problem. But if they go to channel 9 / privacy code 11 - my unit lights up and I can see that they are transmitting but I don't hear anything.

Now I can see how to program in the privacy codes and if I program in the privacy code for channel 9 privacy code 11 I can hear that transmission fine.

I understand how privacy channels work, and that it is just a tone that is transmitted and the radio makes the decision to ignore anything with the tone sent if you are not set to listen to the privacy channel using that tone. I would love to make it so that if anyone broadcasts on a GMRS / FRS channel my radio ignores the tone and I can hear the transmission.

The main reason for this is not to be nosey, but so that while on missions I can scan the GMRS / FRS frequencies and maybe locate the subject if they are transmitting.

Thanks in advance.

can someone help me with fire tones for delware county

Uhf repeater antenna question

I'm in the process of setting up a GMRS repeater (460 uhf) and I have a feed line question. I'm going to be putting out 50w at the repeater. I understand the importance of a quality antenna and feed line. With that being said, I have RG8X that I'm planning on using. It's a 30' run from the repeater to the antenna. With all other things taken out of the equation for this discussion, just focusing on the feed line - is this a bad idea? Obviously, using something like LMR-400 would be better, but I already have the rg8x. Am I going to see a major loss in performance with the 8x? Thanks for your input.

BCD536HP Unit ID question

On the MSWIN system that I monitor, I have noticed something that is unusual, at least to me. Sometimes the same officer shows up with a different unit ID. For example, say that the unit ID is 107999, other times that same officer's radio will show up as 108999. The third number is the only one that changes. Would that be because maybe on one transmission they are using a mobile radio, and on the other they are using a handheld? Not sure what would cause it, other than that, so I wasn't sure if it was a bug with the 536, or some other reason.

The department I'm referring to is phase 1 P25, and other than the previously mentioned item, unit ID's work great on Phase 1... they don't switch correctly on phase 2 though.

TFS traffic in Lubbock

Over the last week Ive heard Tx Forest Service on 159.285.For Lubbock it is an unusal hit. Most of the transmissions are which roads to take as they are passing through. Looks like it is going to be another busy season for TFS fire fighters.

Database Downloads

I have a question for the database gurus. Since the Home Patrols and GRE 800 radios are operated by the database download, is it possible to change certain parameters? When I run my 536 on full database, the NYSP troops have an automatic 2 second delay, which prevents monitoring base and mobile transmissions. Now of course, I have created a favorite list to solve that problem, but can the DB download correct that when downloaded to the radio? Thanks!

HT1000 beep after transmission

I have an HT1000 that beeps after I transmit. It only does it on my repeater channel. The beep is not the MDC1200 "squawk" but rather a status beep like you hear when you turn the radio on. I'm at my wit's end trying to determine why my radio does this. Does anyone have any ideas?

BCD396XT Multiple Control Channels

Hey gang. A quick question.

In my area the state of Missouri has something called MOSWIN which links public safety in most of the state.

The question is can I have more than one control channel in a system? I can pick up two different towers at similar reception levels. Therefore, I have two or more control channels.

Will the scanner pick up a control channel and ignore the others? Should I program it differently?

Thanks.

A few P7100 questions.

Hi,

I have some questions pertaining to the P7100.

When the talkgroups are set in programming to 'unencrypted' does the radio only unmute for analog and digital Provoice traffic? If an encrypted call is transmitted on any talkgroup set to unencrpyted does the radio just ignore it or does the radio unmute for the garbled/undecoded transmission? Does the amber LED light when receiving encrypted calls if there is no key? Does it only light if the radio is transmitting an encrypted call?.

Basically, does the radio give any indication that there is encryption in use on a talkgroup when set to unencrypted? I haven't seen or heard any indicators.I'm really kind of interested in seeing how much encrypted activity is actually in use on the system out of my own curiousity.

I also have a question about the full keypad 7170 system model? How is the Direct Entry supposed to work on the radio. When I hit the SYS1 key the SYS = 1 comes up on the display and when a put in a system number on SEL SYS and then the M key the radio just returns the display to the current system selection I'm already monitoring with a confirmation beep.

When I Direct Entry Groups I hit the GRP2 key and the GRP = 1 comes up on the display and when I enter any number on GRP SEL the radio very briefly flashes the talkgroup name of that group number I selected, but then immediately returns the display back to whatever group the radio was previously on with a confirmation beep. I also noticed that if you hit the up ^ arrow key after hitting the GRP key the radio jumps to group 17 and then another press to 33 and another press to 49 and then stops, but you can reverse with the same increments back to 1 with the down arrow key.

It just doesn't seem to do anything in either case. It goes through all the motions, but it's not really going to what I select. Is something not set properly?

The last question I have is,how long does it take for the battery to die when the radio has no bars left on the battery indicator? This thing has been showing no battery left for 6hrs. without any beeping low battery indicator or shutting off lol!

Unitrunker and PSR800 for Getting Motorola/P25 Parameters

Need assistance getting the trunking system information. I know the control channel UHF frequencies, and based on the sound, it could either be Motorola or Phase 25. I don't know any of the trunking parameters besides that. So far I have been unable to get any control channel information dumped.

Here is my configuration:

BCD996T Priority Channels And Other Questions

Hello,

I have a Uniden BCD996T and I am wondering is the scanner suppose to interrupt the transmission from another channel even when the priority channels aren't active. On my BC125AT it did not do this and so I am wondering if this is right. I also noticed some channels have higher volume than other channels is this because of the channel or the scanner? Also I am unsure how to program the quick keys and how to turn them off.

Two articles abt schuyl co radios

Looking for a Grundig G3 replacement

Hello, everyone. This is my first post, and I'm looking for a recommendation of which radio to buy. I had a Grundig G3, but it's broken and can't be fixed, so I have to choose between getting another G3 or something else. Does anyone know of a portable shortwave radio that does better on FM than the G3?

Sensitivity, selectivity, and dynamic range on FM are important to me (I live near a city and within 3 miles of ten powerful FM stations). Second to that would be good performance on shortwave and SSB reception. I don't care much about AM or longwave. Sound quality, ease of use, and other minor touches aren't very important to me. I mostly care about raw performance. I'm also worried about the soft muting employed in the DSP radios; how bad is it on weak, fading signals?

Thanks, everyone.

GPS question

Does anyone know about the gps on the mew mobile scanner? I drive all over and want to know if I would have to program everything in for the GPS to work or if it will automatically?

looking for quick key config examples

I'm wondering if anyone would care to share perhaps a freescan file of their 396XT or 996 config with group and quick keys used?

Basically, I'm looking for someone who has a bunch of trunked and conventional systems all programmed in and layed out really well with group and quick keys that I can use to help me layout and better make use of quick keys.

I've been using them for quite some time now and I'm understanding, but I know there's much better ways to better use my quick keys and I'm hoping someone might be willing to share their config with me just for a sample/ideas.

Location and programming system difference won't matter at all, but seeing how someone who's really good at utilizing quick keys did it might really help me.

Is there anyone willing to send me over their complete config for a view? I mainly use FreeScan but if its from a different program I can load that up as well for comparison.

BCD536HP What are max no. alpha tag character positions for #3 display option "off"?

What are the maximum number of alpha tag characters which can display for the user selected option of display number 3 selected to "off"? I cannot find that information in the owner's manual. Anyone program Motorola Sabers in SECT?

Anyone know anyone who programs Motorola Saber portables in or around SECT?

I contacted two online places that program the radios and run into two problems, both say they only program two zones, even if one zone only has five channels (each zone is capable of 12 channels) and neither will program any public safety frequencies ... even if they are in receive mode only with no transmit capabilities.

If you know anyone who programs the Motorola Saber III locally I'd appreciate it if you'd pass it along.

Public Safety MCT, MDC, MDT?

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (BREW; Opera Mini/6.0.3/27.2354; U; en) Presto/2.8.119 320X240 LG VN530)

I'm curious as to what the difference is between a Mobile Computer Terminal (MCT), a Mobile Data Computer (MDC) and a Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) as installed in public safety vehicles?

I also see that MDT's are sometimes called Mobile Dispatch Terminals.

Is it that terminals must be connected to a central computer to work, but computers can be stand-alone units, and therefore have greater capabilities? Then what's the difference between an MCT and an MDT?

Locally, I have heard Phoenix FD dispatchers use the term PDT (Personal Data Terminal?) in addition to MDC or MDT. Would these be a PDA/tablet-sized version to the laptop-sized MCT/MDC/MDT?

seemingly weird find online

hey everyone, i was looking at Frequencies online, and came across a listing for my old school district. they run Motorola SP50's (everything is handheld no mobiles) anyways, i saw the listing says 32Km radius from the high school address. realistically is there any reason they would need that kind of distance? i cant see a Portable getting that range (not setup for repeaters only simplex) and range only reliably gets about 3-4 miles (stole a radio when i was in school and got caught 4 days later, oops) i dont understand why they would license for that distance from the school. can anyone shed some light on this?

Help me understand WAAS

It was my understanding that WAAS used a terrestrial land based signal that was received by WAAS capable receivers. But in my reading from Wikipedia and a web site it appears a WAAS station (Can't remember the correct term) uplinks corrections to the GPS satellite. Is that how WAAS is used?

Another question: I typed in the GPS frequency of 1575.42 into my scanner connected to an outside antenna, but didn't hear anything. I guess either that is due to the signal being so weak or the wrong modulation which I was using NFM. Maybe it's like DSS? So you can't hear the signal?

The CSP TG's are very busy this weekend

When is Phase 2 not the same?

I'm thinking about buying a Uniden 436 because it will (hopefully) work with the P25 phase 2 systems in my area. In some ads for the scanner I see in the features listing Motorola Phase 2 and in other ads it's simply APCO P25 phase 1 and 2. Are these one and the same? The largest town near me, Macon, Ga. has gone to a Harris system P25 phase 2.

Will the 436 handle this ok?

Is there a reputable, reasonable online seller you'd recommend?

thanks for any enlightenment.

The Big Bang

Did anyone else hear that massive BANG last night from Long Grove? A million dollar house exploded about 10:30 pm, and we were about 10 miles away and our house shook. We lost power for a few seconds, and I was pouring coffee at the time and spilled it from the shaking. Very Violent.

The 436 went active, and as I heard they did about a 15-20 station response after the first alarm, which was a call of a fire in the house. Before the FD got there, the gas blew up the house and about 50 other homes were damaged.

Scanner worked well except I do not have ISPERN (?) or another channel, I cannot remember, which I really needed to hear the fireground chatter.

Orange County P25

Also, does the tower in orange county P25 still work with the TGID listed in the DB.

El Paso Co Medevac Ground Contact

What is the talk group for ground to Medevac helicopter contact? I have been hearing dispatchers say "Stack D", but I have been unable to identify that.

I have been able to locate their regular traffic on the Cheyenne Mtn tower, on their conventional channels and once a long time ago, on AMR Ch 2 TG 4896.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Trying to open sdr.exe

I have attached a screen print of an error message when trying to open sdr.exe. I have it running on one laptop. Trying to get it running on another. I followed same instructions for both computers.

Profiles and startup configuration keys

When I add a new favorites list into a new startup key configuration am I creating a new "profile" that can be changed in the scanner itself and not just through Sentinel? I am just not quite getting the whole profile thing and in particular whether profiles can be changed in the scanner itself.

Minitor V and Scanning Simulcast Channels

So I have a question in regards to the scan features of the Minitor V. Reading old posts, a lot of people have asked questions about scanning 2 different frequencies, one for fire and one for EMS and how to get the best of both worlds while not missing pages. I understand that in that scenario, with silent scan, you get whichever one tones first, with priority scan, you get alerts on F1 only but will hear audio over F2, and on probability scan, you get the same thing as silent scan but your squelch also opens on any traffic.

So my questions is, how does this change if there are 2 channels being simulcast? For example, having an East Tower that transmits on F1 and a West Tower that transmits on F2. Which mode do I want to prevent missing pages?

F1 is the main tower, and F2 is a lower powered repeater/simulcaster. When in the western reaches of the county, F1 can pickup outdoors only (not in vehicles or buildings). What happens if I'm close enough to F1 still for me to pick up some static, but I actually want to hear something on F2 since it'll actually be intelligible?

My thoughts:

Silent Scan: Would be the 2-channel equivalent of Selective Call. Probably the best solution to keep the minitor silent until the right tones are received, but I'm worried that if the fidelity over F1 is too low and it's picking up static, then it won't release F1 to go scan F2 and pick up the alert over there. Or vice versa.

Probability Scan: Would be the 2-channel equivalent of Monitor but if you got static on one channel, it wouldn't release that channel and go to the second channel to listen for tones.

The only solution I currently see is to program a Priority Scan for F1. If you hear nothing but static (or a brief audible voice but then static as F2 switches over to F1 since it's the priority channel) on Priority scan, then you can assume that F2 is the channel you need to be on to hear clearly and you can move to another switch that is "Monitor F2." The biggest disadvantage I see to this is that the stored voice would never work on F2.

Anyone have any better ideas?

Talk Groups on trunked systems

Hi, All:

I have been listening again after taking about a 20 yr break and have enjoyed my new HP-1. Used to be an RCMA member back in the day... that kinda dates me!

My newbie question is how, or who comes up with the descriptions of the various talk groups on a trunked radio system? Specifically, how do we know these are accurate/correct in RR or are they verified somehow? I listen to the TX WARN Project 25 system in Houston, TX and sometimes I see like "Strike Force" or something on a talkgroup in the listings and just wondered are these coming from FCC listings or does someone in the agency provide these (doubtful), or other means? Sometimes the TG listings are very extensive and specific and I know info is only as accurate as the submitter :)

Newbie question and a G5RV

Hi Folks,

I have a question about a new install. I just put up my first G5RV last night and I have it hooked to an IC-745 that I bought a month ago. I'm hoping someone can help me determine the "direction" of the antenna, I've been looking for the samples of the pattern of the antenna on the web and of course now I can't find them ....

I jumped on 40m last night and made my first HF contact with a group of guys in Seattle and we were both crystal clear. (so I know the radio works-grin) I even had the set down to 10 watts and for a newbie I was impressed.

Once the snow goes away I want to put a mast at the peak of the house (2 story) and get the middle of the antenna up above the edge of the roof line and try for another 8 feet so it’s actually “in the air” as opposed to beside the house so figure a total about 40 or 42 feet for the peak. As for the ends they'll get another 8 feet if I think I can get away with it. (2x4’s nailed to the fence) Each end is right now about 16 ft in the air and the middle is at about 35 just hung off the side of the house below the peak about a foot.

One section is at about 300 deg on the compass and the other is about 100 deg so it's NOT in a straight line but if I can find a way to line them up I will. I'm limited because of the lot I'm on, so based on what I have here can anyone give an idea about where that antenna is going to wind up looking or seeing?

Cheers’

Dave

BCD536HP Default USB Action

I had this though this morning and searched before I posted. I found a post in the archived threads.

http://ift.tt/1iouTn8

It would really be nice to make the USB port default to serial or mass storage. Prompting the user halts the whole scanning process if the scanner loses power.

Does anyone know if this is in the works for a future release of the firmware?

Playback

Anyone aware of any other utility other than the VB Cable Audacity Demo SW, that will perform the same function - to passthru sound to any one of the decoder packages (acarsd, digital master, pdw, multipsk, etc) from SDR# and other SDR's using dongles?

Of course working with the VB Audio Cable setup. The Audacity I had running has stopped working, with no relief from re-installs. It fails to open output device.

That utility was nice because it was already VB Cable aware.

Thanks

EAMs

Good Morning everyone. I am interested in buying a receiver that can receive military EAMS. I live just out side of Buffalo New York. Any Info would be helpful. I currently monitor 311.00 MHz and sometimes get EAMS. Thanks for the help.

1/4 wave ground plane for NOAA broadcast

I finally finished this thing :) Now all I need to do is run 80ish feet of coax so I can mount it on the roof.

The vertical element is #10 wire with the insulation still covering it. Every other antenna I see that someone made is always a ground wire(copper wire with no insulation). I wanted a little more protection from the weather so I left the insulation on. I also wanted a little wider frequency coverage (in case I get more crystals for my scanner), so thats why I used #10 instead of #12 wire. The ground radials are 1/4" aluminum solid rods. Yes I know its a little big, but I could only get 1/4" ( I need 3/16"). I'll probably change it in the future if I find smaller aluminum rod.

The radials are attached to a 2"x2" aluminum square with the corners bent up at a 45 degree angle. I got the idea from a random Google search Help is On the Way The only downside to this design is in the construction, it takes a little skill to not break the aluminum plate when forming it and the aluminum rods dont like to be tapped for threads (they strip out easily).

855.7375 ?

Anyone know what this is/was used for? I'm going through an old station scanner and whomever entered this frequency in didn't give it a name and it doesn't appear to be a frequency for a trunked system. I'm not in front of the scanner right now but I believe it had tones in it making me think it is/was a fire channel? It's in the same bank as "county fire" so that would make sense but I haven't heard either of these frequencies active in recent memory.

Antenna/Radio question

I have an Anytone 2 meter/70 cm mobile radio in my shack hooked up to a discone scanner antenna. The problem is I get quite a bit of RF overload where it will stop on certain frequencies sometimes and make noises. My question is if I use an actual 2 meter/ 70 cm antenna like say a Diamond X50A will my receive clear up?

Computer Scanner using SDR

I came across this article which provided instruction to use SDRSharp ( Software defined radio ) and a $20.00 USB Antenna set up to be able to scan im assuming just about any thing imaginable.

Hoping to try it out this weekend ( If the USB shows up tomorrow in the mail )

But has any one tried this or had success with this application?

Being it is all opensource software and the USB need is only $20.00 this could be a very economical solution to a very expensive hobby!

I will also post my results shortly

Hope to get some good feed back on this topic!!

Bexar County Fire Alarm tones only

On the County/City system I am only getting tones and no voice from BCFA on all of the sites. Did they make the switch to Provoice after all these years of being analog? The VHF dispatch channel is still active but no voice at all on the analog BCFA talkgroups

1A0F Chicago trunked dead?

I have scanned the old Chicago Type 2 800 system quite a number of times over the last few days and have not heard a peep of activity other than the control channel? Does anyone still use that system anymore or I have not been monitoring at the right time? During past visits the system was very busy with "interesting" conversations.

New to radio

Hello, I'm new to this whole radio business and so far am fascinated/lost in the intricacies of it. I recently got three kenwood tk-380's from a friend, but if these don't work out, I'm hoping to get some good info/tips from the community at large here. I'm looking to become HAM certified in the near future, and add to radio community.

If anyone has tips, leads, information, or just advice I'm glad to hear it!

Kenwood TK-380 Programming help, and questions.

Hello, I recently acquired three Kenwood TK-380 handsets from a friend of mine, and have a question about them. actually a few.

1.) How do I program them? I am looking to make one of them into a police scanner, of sorts, if this is possible. (As noted in the rules here, I am NOT looking for free software, or anything of that nature, I just don't know where to start.)

2.) Are these still a viable handset? What can I use them for?

3.) Can these be HAM style radios? (I am not certified as of yet, but I intend to begin taking classes from the Portland, Oregon club in the upcoming weeks.)

4.) Do I need anything special to get these handsets talking to one another, or another radio?

I am gathering information right now, as Google frequently landed me here. If I am breaking any rules I am not aware of, please let me know. I am very new to this field and need all sorts of help.

Thanks in advance!

Major Solar Flare Triggered Temporary Communications Blackout

" The sun erupted with a massive solar flare late Thursday (April 24), triggering a temporary communications blackout on some parts of Earth.

The powerful flare peaked at 8:27 p.m. EDT Thursday (0027 April 25 GMT), and ranked as an X1.3-class solar storm, one of the strongest types of flares the sun can experience, according to a report from the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center. Screen Dust.

I have read in the Uniden groups that people with the new 436 are finding dust appearing on the inside of the screen. Anybody else here in Colorado having that issue? Mine has been inside since I got it and I hate having to get the duct tape out to seal the unit after paying $500.00.

Milwaukee EMS patient reports

Any particular reason 462.950 and 462.975 are not in the database for Milwaukee or Milwaukee County?

These are used for patient reports, mainly but not exclusively for the private EMS companies that contract within Milwaukee.

These aren't new, they've been in use since the 70s, they're still active and licensed...

connecting psr-800 to new computer

Hi everyone, longtime posting here had no problems UNTIL I setup my new DELL 8700 computer with windows 7 professional operating system. Using my old computer which had windows XP I changed the com port under the device manager to com 6 and everything worked great. under Windows 7 I went to device manager and didn't notice a designation for that. Anyone running Windows 7 , I would appreciate any help you can give me with setting up the Grecom 800 so I can update my scanner ??????

DPS Pursuit Silence Waco

Last night, I heard about an active pursuit by DPS. Reportedly, there were three DPS units in pursuit; however, I heard nothing on the scanner. I seriously doubt that DPS was playing with their MDT's instead of communicating with dispatch during this event. I believe I have all of the DPS frequencies programmed. Does anyone have any suggestions or insight into this matter?

Has anybody caught at radio traffic(aircraft or DOD base) for the air expo this weekend? Interested to see if we can pin down more talkgroups for the DOD system.

PSR-800 DSP version?

I'm still trying to get my scanner updated to P25 phase 2. I've updated Grecomm's EZ scan software to the latest version. I've updated the cpu to version 1.8 and the dsp firmware to v. 1.3. It seems as though I read in a thread here that the dsp firmware needs to be v1.7? I've read so much about this lately I could have that mixed up. When I click on the dsp firmware update button within EZ scan it says I already have the latest version. My question is do I need this elusive v1.7 and if so where and how can I get it.

Simple Independent "Stop" or "Hold" Button

Hello, everyone. Given the level of tech discussions this is ridiculously elementary, but has anyone ever heard of a hand held device - wired or wireless - consisting of a simple button that allows the scanner user to hold or pause a scan and then re-start it ? For mobile use especially, having to reach over and pick up the handheld, or push the right button on the mobile unit console, could be a distracting and dangerous affair, to say nothing of fouling up the scan if the wrong button is pushed. Thanks !

Clackamas County Sheriff Net 2 VHF

Push to talk PTT phone to phone without carrier service possible?

I recall reading about his on the internet before but can't remember. I searched this forum but couldn't find anything related. Does anyone know if it's possible to use push to talk cellphones as a walkie talkie, just phone to phone? As in, is there a way you can use the PTT feature without carrier service?

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office transition to digital radios

Sheriff Jeff Shaver said in a news release the department was awarded a $40,000 grant from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The money will be used to buy a new digital repeater system, digital car radios and handheld radios.

Cherokee County is a little out of my way, but it looks like they are getting ready to move to digital. Heads up for anyone in that area, it may be time to upgrade to digital scanners.
