Standard LTR System Question

I am staying at the Hard Rock Hotel (once was Cherokee Casino) I was looking up their frequencies

and found this link:

http://ift.tt/12cEA8F

I have a BCD396XT, and have the option to program LT, but decided to program

it as CONV (conventional) As you will see in the link, there are items missing.............

Also, what exactly is this system? Is it trunked? I am simply not familiar with

how to program this (or rather) the best way to simply listen to the system.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

MN State Patrol

Hello, I am a new user here in MN. I just purchased a PRO-652 a few days ago. I live in the south metro area and will probably be asking for advice on some things.

I am wondering about the State Police here. A few days ago I was running some scan lists on wildcard and i noticed the some State Patrol ID's were showing up in different scan lists I had.

Does anyone know how that works specifically? I assume it depends on where the unit is transmitting from or do the State Patrol ID's just automatically go out on all the talk systems?

I am just looking for some insight into this and what is the best way to monitor the State Patrol, since they do not seem to be limited to any specific site here.

Thanks,

Rick

Joshua Tree Nat'l Park question

I just came back from a week at JTNP and, as usual, monitor the 171.675 freq for the Nat'l Park service.

I am able to hear 171.675 from just about anywhere in the park with varying levels of quality (at it's worst, it's still quite usable).

I switched to the repeater input (172.675 per the DB) and WOW!. Although it's listed as a "repeater input" in the DB, it sounds like the output of a repeater. Over in the Jumbo Rocks area, it has a full quieting signal. Same 146.2 PL.

Another thing I noticed listening to this is some of the units will have a short beep at the end of their transmission on 172.675. I don't think I've ever heard this on 171.675.

So it sounds like 171.675 and 172.675 are a simulcast of sorts.

Is there a link frequency I am missing or perhaps someone can explain how this works ?

Thanks.

Mutual Aid repeater?

Does anyone know anything about repeaters on Mutual Aid -- 155.475?

I guess I thought that was frowned on, but I've heard morse code ID's on that frequency from time to time, so I would imagine it's a repeater.

The one I'm almost sure I heard today is Woodbury County (Sioux City).

I guess the possibility does exist that they've got a morse code ID on a simplex frequency, but that would be QUITE unusual.

If it is a repeater, any idea what the input is?

Thanks,

Scott

How to program a 5-tone codification in VX-454 walkies

Hi all from Barcelona,

First of all, thanks in advance for your help.

I have to VX-454 walkies, and I would like to program them to comunicate using a 5-tone codification. I am using CE115 software.

My problem is that I am not able to find any 'Step by step' manual or information around whole internet! My first and basic problem is how to identify each walkie using this codification. Maybe (well, I really suppose it), it is a basic question, but I don't know how to do it using this CE115 software.

Any help will be welcome!

Thanks in advance

Advanced System key question. IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!!!

Let me preface this, I HAVE MY ISSUED SOFTWARE SYSTEM KEY!!

Again, I have a system key!!!! I am not asking/implying/hinting/inuendoing (is that a word) that I need to bypass the system key requirement for my radio.

I have an XTS2500 that is on our local system. Our local system is the ONLY one in the radio. No outside systems or anything like that are programmed into this unit.

I wanted to change the scan setup in my radio. I read it with the CPS, changed a button function (moved scan), and attempted to write back to the radio.

No go????

It says, "cannot write radio without advanced keys".

No problem I think. I just read my software key. The CPS takes it and allows me to enter into the trunking system and change whatever I want (ID, TGs, etc). So I know the CPS is taking it.

I try to write back to the radio again, BOOM. Same message as above.

So I simply read the radio, make no changes, and attempt to write back. Nope. I keep getting this same error.

The radio is not write protected. I made updates to the programming about a year ago and it worked fine.

What am I doing wrong here? I must be missing something.

Thanks,

WM

CPS kills internet access

Whenever I attach a cable to either my xpr7550, or xpr 5550 radio I lose access to the internet. I notice his every time.

I set the radio to a ip address available on my network, but it still kills the internet and my nas shares.

I know the cable should not be there very long, but why does this happen?

Not sure if this is the place to post this, hope so.

vertical mounted yagi work arounds

Been reading a lot about how hard it is to make a yagi style antenna work well vertical. If a non conductive mast pole could be located, and coax was ran to the reflector end; could the yagi be made to work well enough to warrant all the hassle ? End mounting my three element seems to hard to pull off and still using this (made for tv) rotor . Have only been able to locate solid fiberglass 1 1/2"-2"od rods in lengths of eight feet so far That would still leave about three feet of the lower elements in the mast pole path. I tried tilting the beam at a 45 degree angle to the mast also. This did help bring the vswr down to the safe zone as long as no power was added, in which case it raised from 1.4 to 2.5. This is a 10-11meter set up I'm working on. I know I'm just beating a dead horse and should just leave it flat, but I just like trying things said to be non do able.

XPR5550 on-off

The XPR5550 has a soft start for turning the radio on. I built a cable for the rear accessory that allows programming and Ignition sense Pin 26 of the connector (so I was told). This sense lead goes the 12v

I set he ignition sense to On/Off or ignition option under accessories. Programming part works OK.

I thought when power was applied to the radio plus the sense wire, the radio would come on.

It does not. I was told to set this option to follow ignition only. I am concerned if I do that and the sense circuit is not working correct I would not be able to turn the radio on.

Anyone set theirs up this way?

DIY - Ultralight Radio Carry Case

Back in March 2014 I designed and built a custom "stealth ultralight dxing bag", this was designed to carry my 7.5" loopstick Tecsun PL-380 ultralight radio, my AR1733 radio and the various other bits and pieces I carry for portable ultralight dxing sessions. The details of this can be seen here: (Ultralight DXing: DIY - Stealth Ultralight DXing Bag)

Since recently returning to the ultralight DXing hobby after a few months being away, I decided to try and find a better carry solution, while the bag served me well and was cheap at around a $50 total cost, I have changed my approach and having to carry a separate bag (especially when also carrying other bags) became an issue to the point that I stopped carrying it as often.

Yesterday while shopping at our local Ship Loads I came across this case: (Jarvis Walker Utility Large Tackle Box at best sale price with great deals) for $9.95. When I returned home I found that it was the perfect size, however the foam sheet I had at home that I was planning on using for this was about 1cm too small the whole way around.

After going to Bunnings to try and find some suitable foam and not having any luck, I happened to call past Kmart on the way home and found a Yoga block for $6 which was the perfect size.

When I returned home I sat down to work on it and within 3/4 of an hour I had the case set up how I wanted it. Materials used were:

- Jarvis Walker 197 Utility Box Large: $9.95

- Yoga form block: $6

- Black tape: $2.95

- Bubble wrap: $0.50

The foam block was cut to suit the size of the case and then I cut out sections to allow me to securely store both my AR1733 and 7.5" loopstick Tecsun PL-380 ultralight radios plus my aerial, notepad, pens and ear phones. This fits nicely in my backpack where I keep my logs sheets and larger accessories. It is still very

stealthy and much easier to carry. I am really happy with how well this has turned out and for under $20 it is great value.

ROIP Setup Options

I'm looking for different ROIP setups. I like the "simplicity" of the NXU's (but not the price tag).

Asterisk can be a pain to build on certain systems where you don't need (or have the ability to use) a full sized pentium/amd based PC.

Icom-R75 Antenna Suggestions

Hello all, I'm planning on getting a R-75 soon and want to be prepared by having a good antenna for it soon as possible. I usually monitor utility stations, military freqs, aircraft, number stations, hams, unknown signals, and commercial broadcasts, as well as DXing for signals. So pretty much the whole works. I'm looking for a good DXing antenna to pull in those weak signals from far away. I'm able to run a antenna outside as I live in a rural area, and can place it high up as I want.

I'd like the antenna range to be from 1000khz to 30000khz, if possible :)

And I'd like to keep it the $40-85 range, as I don't really want/need to spend that much on a antenna.

So tell me all, what can you recommended me to get, what do you think would be the best for my needs?

Thanks :D

BCD396xt Operational questions...

Greetings...

My first generation BC396 is dying and I am wondering If I should purchase the BCD396xt or one of the newer handhelds. I just have a few questions about certain operations on the BCD396xt.

01) Is the FireToneOut search feature on the BCD396xt an improvement over the BC396? I noticed on the BC396, if the Tones were (Tone A - 747.2 / Tone B - 634.6), each time the tones were set off the display would be a little different (i.e. one time it would show = Tone A - 747.4 / Tone B - 635.1).

02) Also, for the 'System ID/Tower Site' of P25 TRS's, I noticed that the BC396 would not show a Site ID if the tower site is three digit (i.e. Tower Site # 123 would not show up). If it was Site #32, it would show up on the radio as '3232'. Is this fixed on the BCD396xt?

Thanks in advance for any help someone can be.

Unknown data 152.87 (Charlotte Area)

I have been doing some frequency searching to find anything new to listen to and came across some unknown data on 152.87. I tried to look up the licensee on the FCC database but could not find anything obvious. I keep hearing data bursts the sound like MDC IDs but there is no voice at all and my program for that yields nothing. I thought MAYBE taxi MDT data as it sounds similar but got nothing on that app. Anyone want to take a shot and listen to this to see if it is familiar to anyone else? I could be way off and it could just be some proprietary data. Either way anyone else care to make a guess?

Hams: we can be our own worst enemies

I was browsing eBay and noticed this ad for an FT-2500. No, it wasn't the rather high buy it now price for a 15+ year old used radio, but the text in the ad that the seller describes about the local ham community causing him to not want to participate:

Yeasu ft 2500M 2 FM Meter Ham Radio 140 to 174 MHz | eBay

It just goes to show that we can be some of our worst enemies at times, on all sides. This is not about making fun of the seller, or his overpriced radio, but more a commentary on how as hams we can be downright snotty to our fellow hams or prospective hams and not even realize it.

How often do we hear new call signs on a repeater or HF and ignore them?

How often do we get frustrated with new operators who don't know all the ropes or use CB lingo like "Roger that" or say "for ID" after giving their call sign? How often do people outside the hobby ask about our radios and we just blow them off or get annoyed when they refer to them as "CBs" or downplay what ham radio really has to offer.

I am just saying I hate to hear it when people exist the hobby with disgust. Sure, it is a personal right to do so, but I cannot help to stop and think how many times this happens, and correlate that with the dead local bands around here.

I watched a movie tonight called "Her" which takes place in the future where a guy falls in love with a computer operating system. It is a great film as it shows how as a society we are moving away from interpersonal relationships and real one to one, and one to many HUMAN contact. It's a great film because it drives home how technology such as smartphones and the Internet are changing our ability to be social animals, which human beings by nature are (with some exceptions).

Ham radio is all about that: human contact. We all should remember this. I would like to think that the stories like the angry eBay seller making a mass exodus are rare, but is it? Ham radio is like the last holdout of bridging technology with good old fashioned human contact. Let us not forget that.

Greetings, with a question...

Hey guys. I'm pretty new here. My name is Matt. I just passed my ham tech, and general in one session last week. I aced the tech, but failed the general by 1 question. There were 27 of us that showed up for the test, and everyone was very encouraging and positive. They convinced me to re-try the general, and I nailed it. So I'm happy. I'm waiting to show up on the government database before I can transmit...hope to talk to some of you soon

I'm using an old very well taken care of Drake TR7 that my grandpa gave me recently. It has a few minor issues, frequency is a little off, it drifts a bit, am sounds a bit rough and the antenna tuner with it seems a little funny, but overall it works pretty darn good for a rookie like me. It's just old and needs a tuneup I think.

I have contacted a guy who knows these radios on the recommendation of someone here to get these issues sorted out, and got what I feel is a pretty reasonable quote, problem is reasonable or not, I just cant pay it right now...heh. So, I've been living with it.

Now today, something I think is possibly fairly serious is happening. I've been listening on 40m for about 2 or 3 hours. There are tons of people on, nets going on, contests etc... About 3 or 4 times in the last couple hours the volume would just drop on active conversations over the course of maybe 10 seconds until there was no sound being emitted by the radio at all...not even static. Power off, power back on, and its fine again.

Any ideas? Might be something simple I can take care of myself if I had some direction....

HP-1/HP-2 Scanning Florida Fire Departments

I'm pretty burned out to scanning damn near everything here in Florida going digital & trunked but since I'm getting back into fire service scanning again, the database appears to indicate an increasing number of FD's transitioning to digital modes & trunked systems so I guess I have to dump all my conventional analog stuff & advance myself into the 21st century of high tech scanning, which one of these super scanners would suit my needs to receive both trunked, digital & analog fire service frequencies for the various fire departments in the Sunshine State, or is there another less expensive scanner that I'm not aware of, thanks for your time & assistance.

BTW: Any other members in Florida specialize in strictly fire service scanning?

Problem with TX and RX

I just installed my yaesu 8800 in my Tundra. Once I got everything together and did a radio check, I noticed it was not receiving and transmitting correctly. It acts like the antenna is not there. The radio worked fine with out any problems when I had it in my home. I believe it has something to do with the Antenna setup. I used one of the four bed rails post holes. It is a NMO Breedlove bracket. It does sit on top of a plastic bed-liner. I wondering if I should run a wire from the bracket to ground the antenna better to solve my problem.

I am not sure if it could be the coax running from the base of the antenna bracket to the radio. I purchased a pre-made cable, but had to cut one end to run in to the cab of the truck. I put on a new Connector at the radio end. The coax does not fit all that well, plus the coax core is strained wire, not solid. Not sure if I should try another connector or replace the coax.

My previous antenna on the Tundra was a magnet mount, which worked better that I thought it would. I replaced it for a more permanent one.

Okay, I know this one has been gone over several times, and I could not find the appropriate thread, please do not be ashamed to move this. I have purchased a full kit, including the radio, ext speaker and wireless mike. I read that the Mike is digitally connected to the radio in the spectrum of 1920-1930mhz. Also, cb rule 19 (95.419) has not changed. The rule book that came with the kit says so. Funny how I can buy a radio controlled radio and use it on the air. Hey guys, so I've been some custom searches on my 997xt for local monroe co businesses. It started earlier this week when I was trying to see if i could hear towing companys during the snow storm.

I found a frequency 464.6200 clear as day, its a business but not sure who. Did a search on fcc website and here and could not find anything.

The other thing is that I'm not sure it is just one company per the frequency. No tones are coming up either. I do hear some beeps etc from time to time. The clear transmissions I do hear, after they are done talking, there is a long pause with static then a few high pitch beeps.

not sure if I need to just listen and find out who it is, or has anyone else come across this.

BC125AT Noise on VHF Low

Hi all,

I wonder can anyone help with this - I just got my hands on a UBC125XLT and I notice that when used with a telescopic antenna, or the stock one, there is quite a bit of noise across Low VHF. Enough to stop the radio scanning on many frequencies. The problem clears up when an external antenna is used but that's not much use when out and about.

I guess the noise is being internally generated, by the screen? - anyone got any ideas on perhaps lessening this.

Anyone have a similar experience with this model?

Somerset Pulling the Plug 3600 EOL Analog

Somerset County has announced the end of the original legacy 3600 baud 470-512 4.1 trunked radio system as it is no longer supported by mother M calling it end of life (EOL).

While somewhat vague, the end of 2015 was mentioned to terminate the use of this system.

This announcement encourages users to migrate to the 9600 470-512 P25 trunked radio system. No mention of the FCC clawback of 470-512 was mentioned. Subscribers will need to upgrade thier existing radios to 9600\P25 $$$

It would appear that there is no interest in moving Fire and EMS to the County 700 system until the clawback occurs.

For those interested in listening to Somerset County Fire EMS and Analog PD's like North Plainfield you will need to have a P25 trunking scanner in the future if you do not have one.

Any Kirisun DP770 users here?

If so, could I get a copy of a code plug for the radio? I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to program mine, and if I had a code plug to upload into the programming software and look at / learn from, it might make things easier to figure out.

I've checked in a couple of Yahoo groups (well one so far); the "open" group didn't have any in the files and the other group I wanted to check in hasn't approved my membership request yet.

Thanks in advance. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Open source hardware mods?

Anyone doing anything of this sort?

I did some projects 20 years ago and over the last few months I have brought those back to life.

Just wondering if there are any hardware hackers out there.

I redesigned my 20 year old PLL controller on an FPGA and added an OLED display to replace the channel display, for example. I did the same thing 20 years ago to an old Midland I had with an 02A PLL.

Recently re-wrote it in C for an AVR (like an Arduino)

Will make a video about it... and thinking about putting the code out there after I finish tweaking it for an Arduino - that's what I am doing now to try to make it easier on hobbyists.

It's also a challenge.. make the code small enough to use 2k of sram and 31k of flash :)

I have flip-flopped on it a bunch.. trying to do it on various MCUs and FPGAs...

Was running it on a Spartan-III then a Cyclone II and then an ARM core MCU like the ATSAM3X

Had a lot of fun doing this project.. and an old radio with an OLED channel display will look cool too :)

For upMan, et al: "Sites" On Trunked Sys.: Seeing On HP-1 ?

Hello.

Recently started playing around with Trunking, and

am making good progress, I think. Using Butel and a HP-1.

Everyone has been so good in helping me out; most appreciative.

I can do most everything I want now, thanks again to everyone, but

some of the nuances I'm still having trouble with.

Might someone please clarify this for me:

Using the Massachusetts State Police as an example.

If I open up the main Folder for, all the Sites and Talkgroups appear. Many of each.

I select Avoid for several of the Sites, but NOT for all.

I then Collapse everything, and now have only the main Folder showing.

I then send this entire Folder to the radio.

I then go to the radio's screens and Select Review/Edit Channels.

It all seems to be there, even the Talkgroups. Great.

There are 3 lines that show up for each of the "labeled areas" on the radio's screen.

If I Hold on one of them while listening:

The top one shows: Massachusetts State Police

The middle one shows one of the Talkgroups

The bottom one shows one of the talkgroup lines from the spreadsheet

that opened up (right hand pane) for this particular Talkgroup in Butel.

Questions:

a. Main Question: Other than for the Sites that I checked to be Avoided before the

download to the radio, how do I see on the radio's screens which Site is

actually being used/scanned at the moment ?

b. I assume that all of these Sites (other than the Avoided) will be scanned "automatically". Correct ?

c. Actually, other than the Boston Site, I am not even sure that I am/can be in

range of any of them.

However, are they still being scanned though ?

Thanks,

Bob

Brantford Fire

Hey All,

Anyone been listening to Brantford Fire recently? it seems something has changed and I can not get them, only static when they talk anymore. FORTS had given me some info before for WIN96

In Win96 set the bank type to 'MOT', and MOT 9600 CC to Multi Table, then click on the Extended Tables box. In the window that pops up click on 800 MHz under the 9600 CC column. Now, in the table below change the first line to these values:

CH Lo - 0

CH Hi - 4095

Base Freq - 860.0000

Offset - 0

Step - 12.500

but found this seems not to work anymore either, Anyone who can shed some light on this??

thanks

Can anyone tell me a scanner that works on the new system they installed last year in the Wayne, Westland, Garden City Area 48186 & 48185 I had the Home Patrol 1 and around last March it went pretty Silence

Here is what I can find

The five communities of Dearborn Heights, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, and Westland that comprise the Western Wayne Mutual Aid Association have decided to migrate to the MPSCS. When examining the costs associated to upgrade the infrastructure on their now obsolete 800 MHz legacy trunking system that was built by Motorola nearly 15 years ago, it was far more cost effective to move to the statewide interoperability network. The changeover should be completed by early January, 2014.

Does anyone know of a scanner that works for this area now ?

Modifying The Uniden BC23A (Auto Power Off)

With so many Uniden owners using amplified external speakers, I have wondered if anybody here has modified the Uniden BC23A amplified external speaker? I love the speaker, but I don't care for the Auto Power Off function. I sometimes miss a little bit of audio while the speaker "wakes up". Does anybody know how difficult it would be to remove that functionality?

PSR500 Question

I purchased a used PSR500 and have been programming it with the PSRedit500 software. It works fine for a few days or so and then the "T" quits flashing on and off while scanning and I quit receiving any P25 traffic. Any ideas to what is going on and how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

BCD436HP Am I using Sentinel correctly?

I have a feeling I'm overlooking something. Long ago I created all my favorite lists and they work fine. But when I download the weekly master DB update, how can I know which (if any) of the systems, TGID's, control frequencies that are in my FL's, need to be updated? Is the only safe method of updating my FL's to delete and re-create them (along with all the customizations I may have done to them)??

Surely the software includes a better way to either update FL's automatically, or at least make it possible to compare/identify the changes so that they can be applied manually. Any help will be appreciated!

Fellow Radio Heads,

I bought what was advertised as a UHF / VHF Radiophone from a web ad.

Once it arrived determined it is single band (UHF) 16 channels, no software.

There is no information about programming or where to locate the PC Software.

After an extended search I was able to locate Baiston's home page.

and requested the software with a translated message.

In the meantime, should anyone locate a source for this PC software, would you keep me

Is there any software available that can be used to download search frequency lockouts from the UBC-3500 to a computer ?

Hello,

i love your software works flawlessly, i have noticed an increasing trend, i am seeing LRRP's that i know to be carrying GPS Data however it isnt showing, my theory is that they are compressing the data, is there any way around this at all, one of the other things i have noticed is your software does not decode Tier 3 Control Channels which we are seeing alot of here in australia.

again i love your software, just two known issues that i am seeing

I'm sorry, but DSD+ really does sound crap :(

I give credit where credit is due and the person or people that produced DSD+ have produced a software product that potentially allows enthusiasts access to SDR and discriminator tapped Digital Voice at little, if any cost.

However, the reproduced audio that DSD+ produces is pretty bad compared to virtually every other DV decoder product on the market.

Now, before anyone asks me what my error rates are, they are zero. Yep, zero error rate after running DSDTune and monitoring reasonably strong signals. The problem is not low signal strength or high error rates, or over-driven audio devices.

I have mentioned this several times previously and either I get blasted by the DSD Fanboys or told that I am simply doing something wrong with my PC audio setup. I assure you, I am not. Nothing I can do to my PC or sound card will correct the highly compressed, very low dynamic range audio that DSD+ produces.

I recently had the opportunity to test the latest firmware for the ADCR25 standalone, SDR P25 & DMR receiver produced by RU3ANQ. Believe me when I say that you haven't heard good quality P25 phase 1 audio until you listen to what the ADCR25 produces. This tiny little receiver, produces P25 audio unmatched by my BCD436HP and any of my GRE scanners.

So, yes it is possible to produce 'in house' software DV decoders that sound as good as a $2000 Motorola.

Hopefully, the DSD/+ authors can rectify the audio quality in their decoders in future versions..

I'm sorry, but DSD+ really does sound crap :(

Phone lines working intermittently across Vermont....

Landlines and the 911 telephone system is having problems across the State of Vermont.

Both the landlines and the 911 Emergency phone system are working intermittently and dispatchers across the state are toning out agencies to make them aware of the problems.

Barre City even posted to Facebook advising anyone needing emergency services, if they cannot get through on the 911 system, to go out and pull the call boxes that are attached to the telephone poles! I didn't even know these call boxes still worked.

They have also posted 2 cell phone numbers if needed.

I believe the telephone problems are related to:

1) The snowstorm that hit the Northeast Wednesday night into Thursday morning dropping up to 16" of snow in some spots. Also causing wide spread power outages and telephone service getting interrupted due to tress and limbs falling on lines.

2) The 6 week old strike that is going on right now between Fairpoint Communications and it's workers.

Fairpoint has hired replacement workers while the regular workers are on strike.

What a mess.....

Ad hominem

This is a pervasive problem not only in political arena but on message forums as well. if we are to make change we need to start with ourselves out here in society and *Hope* that change is enough to reach the "Disrict of Columbia". I use "Pay It Forward* as a concept worth striving for by changing the world starting with ourselves and doing a little something each day to change someone elses world and hope they will change and do a little something to change the world of another.

Wikipedia:Ad hominem

Quote:

An ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"[1]), short for argumentum ad hominem, means responding to arguments by attacking a person's character, rather than to the content of their arguments. When used inappropriately, it is a fallacy in which a claim or argument is dismissed on the basis of some irrelevant fact or supposition about the author or the person being criticized.[2] Ad hominem reasoning is not always fallacious, for example, when it relates to the credibility of statements of fact or when used in certain kinds of moral and practical reasoning.[3]

Fallacious Ad hominem reasoning is normally categorized as an informal fallacy,[4][5][6] more precisely as a genetic fallacy,[7] a subcategory of fallacies of irrelevance.[8]

Ad hominem arguments are the converse of appeals to authority, and may be used in response to such appeals, for example, by pointing to the feet of clay of the authority being pointed to.

Quote:

Abusive

Abusive ad hominem usually involves attacking the traits of an opponent as a means to invalidate their arguments. Equating someone's character with the soundness of their argument is a logical fallacy. Mere verbal abuse in the absence of an argument, however, is not ad hominem nor any kind of logical fallacy.[9]

Ad hominem abuse is not to be confused with slander or libel, which employ falsehoods and are not necessarily leveled to undermine otherwise sound stands with character attacks.

Tu quoque

Main article: Tu quoque

Ad hominem tu quoque (literally: "You also") refers to a claim that the source making the argument has spoken or acted in a way inconsistent with the argument. In particular, if Source A criticizes the actions of Source B, a tu quoque response is that Source A has acted in the same way. This argument is fallacious because it does not disprove the argument; if the premise is true then Source A may be a hypocrite, but this does not make the statement less credible from a logical perspective. Indeed, Source A may be in a position to provide personal testimony to support the argument.

For example, a father may tell his son not to start smoking as he will regret it when he is older, and the son may point out that his father is or was a smoker. This does not alter the fact that his son may regret smoking when he is older.

Circumstantial

Ad hominem circumstantial points out that someone is in circumstances such that they are disposed to take a particular position. Ad hominem circumstantial constitutes an attack on the bias of a source. This is fallacious because a disposition to make a certain argument does not make the argument false; this overlaps with the genetic fallacy (an argument that a claim is incorrect due to its source).[10]

The circumstantial fallacy applies only where the source taking a position is only making a logical argument from premises that are generally accepted. Where the source seeks to convince an audience of the truth of a premise by a claim of authority or by personal observation, observation of their circumstances may reduce the evidentiary weight of the claims, sometimes to zero.[11]

Examples:

Mandy Rice-Davies's famous testimony during the Profumo Affair, "He would [say that], wouldn't he?", is an example of a valid circumstantial argument. Her point was that a man in a prominent position, accused of an affair with a callgirl, would deny the claim whether it was true or false. His denial, in itself, provides little evidence against the claim of an affair. Note, however, that this argument is valid only insofar as it devalues the denial; it does not bolster the original claim. To construe invalid evidence of the denial as valid evidence of the original claim is fallacious (on several different bases, including that of argumentum ad hominem); however likely the man in question would be to deny an affair that did in fact happen, he is no less likely to deny an affair that never happened.

Consider the following circumstance as a clear case of an ad hominem argument: "David Duke says that white people are victims of police brutality just as often as black people... but honestly, would you believe a claim made by a racist?"

Guilt by association

Main article: Association fallacy

Guilt by association can sometimes also be a type of ad hominem fallacy if the argument attacks a source because of the similarity between the views of someone making an argument and other proponents of the argument.[10]

This form of the argument is as follows:

Source S makes claim C.

Group G, which is currently viewed negatively by the recipient, also makes claim C.

Therefore, source S is viewed by the recipient of the claim as associated to the group G and inherits how negatively viewed it is.

An example of this fallacy could be "My opponent for office just received an endorsement from the Puppy Haters Association. Is that the sort of person you would want to vote for?"

Ad feminam

Ad feminam is marked by appealing to irrelevant personal considerations concerning women, especially prejudices against them rather than giving an answer to the contentions they made.[12][13][14] The term is most frequently used in this sense in feminist philosophy, to note systemic tendencies to discredit opinions of women. As such, it is similar in nature and purpose to such feminist neologisms as "herstory". The term was coined in 1963 and is modeled on the much older ad hominem, but takes into account the gendered nature of attacks on women as women or because they are women.[15]

Types of ad hominem reasoning

When an ad hominem argument is made against a statement, it is important to draw a distinction whether the statement in question was an argument or a statement of fact (testimony). In the latter case the issues of the credibility of the person making the statement may be crucial.[11]

Doug Walton, Canadian academic and author, has argued that ad hominem reasoning is not always fallacious, and that in some instances, questions of personal conduct, character, motives, etc., are legitimate and relevant to the issue,[16] as when it directly involves hypocrisy, or actions contradicting the subject's words.

The philosopher Charles Taylor has argued that ad hominem reasoning is essential to understanding certain moral issues, and contrasts this sort of reasoning with the apodictic reasoning of philosophical naturalism.[3]

Getting licensed

Hello fellow radio heads! I'm looking to do the jump from receiving to transceiving as I would like to join the local repeaters (VE6CTV/VE6OIL) in & around Calgary. I listen to the net quite a bit & get loads of enjoyment out the discussions & topics that arise. So to sum up my question, where/how do I apply for a operators license in Alberta?

Thanks in advance!

Confess! Your a closet fan of __________!

Well some of you may know that my taste in music is hard rock and heavy metal but I do have other tastes as well. Now that I'm older, I really don't care what anyone thinks of me but when I was younger besides listening to black sabbath, iron maiden and Metallica.

I was a closet fan of ABBA and Kate Bush. So there's my confessions.

On a side note, I am also a big fan of the beetles, genesis, peter Gabriel and Queen. Besides my heavy metal/rock fascination, I also love the blues, jazz and classical music.

KPG-89DNK

I just got some new TK-8180H radios and I am purchased the programming software (KPG-89DK). I have built my codeplug but am getting the following error "please check all connections and com port settings". The only COM settings I get are ports 3-7 and in the device manager it is showing Port 25. Can someone assist me in being able to program these radios?

Can someone tell me what this is and is it scannable ? I am assuming it is something to do with satellite technology, but will ask if it is a radio or computer based system.

SQ Mode, Code Questions

Hello,

Sure is a lot to know. Using a HP-1 with Butel.

For "Conventional" frequency System lists, I have generated some FAV lists from information I have copied from RR and elsewhere.

Many of the frequencies have CTCSS showing under SQ Mode in parts of the FAV list, but for many frequencies in the list they are just blank.

Same for the SQ Code.

My main objective/concern is that I don't want to miss anything due to a wrong, or missing, code.

I am thinking that perhaps the best thing for me would be to avoid all of them, and worry about any interference only if it actually occurs.

But am not really sure that this would be best.

Would you suggest just setting everything to: Search, None, or ALL ? Which/Why ?

Could you perhaps explain what each of these setting does, please ?

Is "None" the exact same as just leaving it blank ?

Would "Search" be better ?

What does "All" actually do.

What do you think would be best approach for me ?

Again, I am willing, I think, to put up with occasional interference between transmitters, but

would like not to miss anything due to an improper, or missing, Code.

Thanks,

Bob

Indianapolis Database Updates

I noticed that there have been some changes made recently to the Indianapolis DPS page in the database, adding text that says the Lawrence PSAP will be merged with Indianapolis's in the near future to comply with the PSAP consolidation law. I would be very interested to know the source of this information, as I find it dubious for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is indisputably false to say that any consolidation is necessary to comply with the law, because Marion County is exempt from the PSAP consolidation law. To wit:

Quote:

IC 36-8-16.7-47 Sec. 47. (a) For purposes of this section, a PSAP includes a public safety communications system operated and maintained under IC 36-8-15.

(b) As used in this section, "PSAP operator" means:

(1) a political subdivision; or

(2) an agency;

that operates a PSAP. The term does not include any entity described in subsection (c)(1) through (c)(3).

(c) Subject to subsection (d), after December 31, 2014, a county may not contain more than two (2) PSAPs. However, a county may contain one (1) or more PSAPs in addition to the number of PSAPs

authorized by this section, as long as any additional PSAPs are operated:

(1) by a state educational institution;

(2) by an airport authority established for a county having a consolidated city; or

(3) in a county having a consolidated city, by an excluded city (as defined in IC 36-3-1-7).

Secondly, I haven't heard anybody breathe a word about any plans for a consolidation, and I believe I would have if there were any. Lawrence has little incentive to give up its PSAP voluntarily. Given that the current government of Beech Grove sorely regrets the previous administration's decision to do so, it is my guess that neither Lawrence nor Speedway is likely to follow suit anytime soon.

I respectfully suggest that the author of these database changes should site a source.

Need to find systems - BCD396XT

I created a system on my new Uniden BCD396XT using Free Scan software and labeled it System 1.

I would like to listen to some pre-programmed frequencies such as the Ham radio frequencies, Close call etc but am now unable to find them. Did I overwrite them when I downloaded the local frequencies?

I was just monitoring Nwk EMS main dispatch on 155.400 regarding person being hit by a train near newark penn station. They quickly made an announcement to move all operations to Channel 6. I checked both 155.100 and 155.295 and heard nothing! Does anyone know what frequency channel 6 is on THEIR radios?

TX: Warrantless Blood Draws Unconstitutional

AUSTIN – Texas law that allows police officers to take blood samples from suspected

drunk drivers without a warrant is unconstitutional,

the state's highest criminal court ruled Wednesday.

The ruling could impact Texas' "no refusal weekends," including during the upcoming

Thanksgiving holiday, when officers target suspected drunk drivers and subject them to

mandatory breath and blood testing in the field.

Cliff effect danger?

With more agencies moving to digital voice systems, are police officers in danger of losing a signal because of the Cliff effect?

Cliff effect

In telecommunications, the (digital) cliff effect or brickwall effect describes the sudden loss of digital signal reception. Unlike analog signals, which gradually fade when signal strength decreases or electromagnetic interference or multipath increases, a digital signal provides data which is either perfect or non-existent at the receiving end. It is named for a graph of reception quality versus signal quality, where the digital signal "falls off a cliff" instead of having a gradual rolloff.

I am looking for Public Works and Parks departments if they have it and could send it my way that would be great. I have the BCD99XT set up on close call and am thinking the talk groups and traffic I am hearing and seeing is either Parks or Public Works but want to be sure.

Bricked 396XT

Hello there,

Recently I got the genius idea to insert a disc. tap on my 396XT, and despite reading the many warnings previously posted here I went ahead anyways and basically bricked the unit. The scanner appears to be passing baseband audio to the speaker/headphone jack. The LED display works fine and all the buttons/knob still work, but somehow I screwed up the RF circuitry as the squelch control is totally gone. When I turn the scanner on but don't select anything, there is a low hiss as if the squelch is totally off.

When I hold on a single frequency associated with a local Public Safety VHF Repeater, I hear constant noise (possibly baseband audio) except when the repeater is transmitting. Whenever the repeater transmits I get a strong signal with clean audio, but when the repeater un-keys it goes back to constant noise. Moreover it doesn't recognize or display any tones, only CSQ. I'm thinking I might have accidentally dropped solder over a pin or something, is that a possibility for what could have caused this? Also, would Uniden be able to fix something like this (obviously not under a warranty)?>

BlackFriday: Why Uniden not participate?

All mfg., like Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, etc., started promo campaigns with resellers, like HRO & Universal Radio. But Uniden and ScannerMaster pricing is the same even on Black Friday. But latest Uniden products buggy and still sells for street pricing. Why Uniden don't want to try to sell more fore reduced/promo prices?

Superior Equipment Operators Club

Are there any members who were part of that club or remember them? I believe they were based out of Italy. I had a membership number; SSB - 84N. This was back in the early '90s.

They were also known as SEO , International DX Group, <calling all over the world>

And they pretty much used 40.555 MHz as the calling frequency.

Is anyone using the RT systems software, comments requetsed

I was looking at the RT Systems software for my Icom radio's, and it does not appear that I can use the same cable for both, except that the IC-7100 software indicates that it can work with the cable that Icom supplied, which is a standard USB cable.

Is the RT Systems software worth the cost when it comes to D-Star, or just simply repeater programming.

Any comments from anyone using it are welcomed.

Went on a signal hunt(simulcast only)

Put my 996xt in the car and headed out from Kechi west on 61st street, dead signal, turned north on Hillside to 85th street dead signal, went west on 85th to Valley Center, dead signal, turned on Meridian and went south, dead signal until I-235,started to get some WPD traffic, farther south I went the better it got,at 21st and Amidon I was getting lots of calls, turned around and headed back north to 29th street, went east on 29th to Broadway still getting calls, turned north on Broadway, signals started to drop at about I-235,got sporactic calls to 61st north, went east on 61st street and calls stopped coming in at I-135.

I have come to the conclusion that my poor signal at home is not related to a cell tower RF,its a weak signal that I am struggling with and a Yagi might fix it,got one with 11db gain coming.

I can't get the voice channel to "hop" off 0HZ to the next control channel frequency. I have UniTrunker v1.0.29.5. I'm using two R820Ts for signal & voice. I've checked the Enable box in the main options window and I have the Chase box checked in the voice receiver. I'm just trying to get UniTrunker to work alone.

I was concerned that the SDRSharp plugin might have screwed up Unitrunker standalone so I I've removed Remote.DLL from the Unitrunker folder. Could the plugin have made other changes to UniTrunker?

Maybe I'm jumping the gun and this is a known problem to be addressed in a subsequent release but I am still curious because this is such an obvious problem.

Just curious what the train of thinking is, understand with PL/DPL etc..

Icom USB driver issues under Windows 8.1

Happy Thanksgiving!

Up until last week I had been using an old PC running Vista and it actually worked very well for me. I just bought a new PC (A Dell Dimension 3000 if you must know!) running 8.1. I have just about everything switched over but I am having an issue with the Icom USB to UART bridge driver. My radio is an IC-7410. It worked great under Vista, but now, when I attempt to install the driver (64 bit), when I go into Device Manager, I get the dreaded “This device can not start (Code 10)” message. It wants to install the driver on Com 4, so I tried to force it onto Com 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc. and still no joy.

I can’t tell you how many times I have uninstalled and re-installed the driver and downloaded the software and still no joy.

As a side note, I had the same issue when I installed the Prolific cable to program my HT. (I remember the days when you did not need software to program a radio!) I let Windows find the driver and it automatically selected Com 3 and that's when I got the error message. After a bit of Googling, I finally found a fix for this that actually appeared to be using a much older version of the driver software and it worked like a charm, but so far no such luck with Silicon Labs.

Yes, I posted this on the IC-7410 Yahoo group and created a ticket with Icom. I certainly can't be the only one having this problem!

Help!
