Reading a cdm 1250

I searched the forums and was unable to find an answer to this question. I would like to know if read a radio that was programmed using a earlier version of cps than what I have and save the code plug but don't write anything to the radio will that cause the radio to bed to be programmed in the future from my version of cps or will the earlier one still work?

(From what I understand once a radio has been WRITTEN to using a newer version of cps you can't go back to the older one)

I'm just trying to clarify about the reading part.
