Using time of day instead as acknowledgement

Rant- why do dispatchers constantly say the time of day? I'm sure the tapes have a time log as part of their data, everyone has a phone or watch, as do the patrol cars. So what's the big deal of saying the time seven times in two minutes rather than simply acknowledging a radio transmission? It sounds stupid and takes up more air time. /Rant
