hey all,
Pretty new to scanning but I have been doing some reading and YouTube watching about scanning, trunked systems and talk groups. Im located in MA, and want to monitor several different agencies. The MSP (mass state police) use the Motorola type II smartnet trunking system in the 800mhz range I belive. However my local agencies also use UHF and VHF frequencies as well, and I believe the MSP also uses VHF for car to car. As I have been researching I wanted to just get one scanner and connect UHF, VHF, and an 800mhz antenna into a splitter then into the scanner, I now realize this isn't the way to correctly set up a scanner, however I don't want to have three separate scanners. I think I would rather just buy three antennas and use the one appropriate for the channels I want to listen to at that time. I was looking into just a single antenna that would receive signals from VHF to 800mhz however many people have mentioned these broadband antenna do not work well in the 800mhz + range, so that's why I was thinking it would be easier to just get three different antenna. Now most scanners I have seen claim they do fine in the 800mhz freqs but I was reading about "steps" and sometimes scanners will round up the freq and could cause shortened transmission or not great quality? How do I find a scanner that doesn't round up or down the frequency? Thanks for you time and any advice!
