BCT15X, BC780XLT.. opinions?

Wondering if anyone has both, and has any thoughts on VHF performance? Long story short, I want something for aero and marine, don't care about milair, UHF or lowband.



Long story, with the new P25 system coming online here, and most public safety moving to it, my BCD996XT (which I usually use for VHF as it performs so well) is going to be pretty much dedicated to that now. GRE's don't work so well for me, their front ends are so hot that a nearby DMR repeater clobbers them completely on VHF, even with a PAR notch filter.



I'm kind of narrowing down to either a BCT15X or a used BC780XLT.

BCT15X because I assume it's reception on VHF is going to be similar to my 996XT which I'm already quite happy with, and 780XLT because I've heard so much good stuff about it on aero.

Some people say they're about equal. Just wondering if anyone has both and can share their opinions? The 780 seems to be a bit hard to find in the used market though, so it may not be worth waiting around if the perceived difference is negligible.



Antenna is a DPD OmniX for now mounted in the attic for now. Plan is to move it outside this spring.

RCMP Canada Wide 420 MHz Frequencies

I'm not sure about other provinces, but here in PEI the RCMP use the 420 MHz frequencies for special use and for interop with neighbouring provinces New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. All use is P25 and encrypted.



Even though RCMP are moving to the P25 trunk system in NS and PEI, I've heard from multiple sources that the RCMP plan to keep the 420 MHz frequencies for backup use and that IC has allocated the 420-426 MHz band for RCMP use only.



If the RCMP has a 5 year Canada wide mandate to move to secure systems, why would they want to keep the 420 MHz band? Perhaps to have a single system, as most of the systems RCMP use across Canada are not compatible with each other.



Can anyone confirm or deny any of the information?

BCD536HP 536HP weird screen - Part of analyze function?

Somehow I managed to get this on my 536HP.



Now don't ask me what I did because I don't even know how I did it or how to even get out of it as I had to turn the scanner off and back on to get back to regular scanning. This is on the latest firmware also but I really don't remember what I did to even get it to come up.



Just thought it was interesting though to see something on it but no way, that I saw, to see anything that it was doing at the time. Nothing on the display changed or would not respond to pushing any buttons.







Can't wait to see the total package when it comes available as I have messed with the remote software some and was able to use it to see some information on the system I was scanning.

just got my new BCT15X scanner in and trying to set up Indiana State Police Motorola type 2 re banded channel. i am not using any software, as i only need to input few channels, so all manual here. Heres what ive done in order and where i get an error, also note with the 15x it doesnt give me an option to select type 1/2 or hybrid, just "MOT"

also under "ID SCAN" it shows a "NFM" for 1 second, then a frequency "853.8750" is displayed for 1 second, and it just keeps cycling. what am i doing wrong here??

Hey everyone, wondering if any of u 668 owners are having this issue, I am not a newbie around scanners. But this is my first object oriented scanner, it seems pretty straight forward as far as programming the thing. Prob is creating V scanner folders. I'm trying to create one per county that I would like too monitor, everything goes fine creating them till I try to play them then I get the Nothing to play message, I have created them in the scanner only and also in the software. I've been noticing an output PL of 136.5 on the DNR Blue repeaters in my area (Tomah/Black River Falls). Anyone know if the DNR repeaters now have PLs on the output or is this just unique to my area?

Listening to Denver P25 and hearing on one the TG's that there telling some of there units to come and get there radio's reprogramed. Anyone hearing this?

800 Mhz trunking 536 vs 996XT vs 996P2 vs HP2

I have reported in other threads that all of the scanners in the title do well on strong trunking sites here in Los Angeles with good to excellent P25 decoding. Certainly the 536, but also the 996P2 and HP2, I find to have a bit better P25 decoding than the 996XT. The 996P2 is surprisingly great.

For 800 Mhz trunking, however, in my experience and testing over the last several days, the 536HP is the hands down winner on weaker trunking sites. I have been monitoring the UCLA (my alma mater in 1974) Motorola Type II Smartnet system with Butel software for several hours during the night. All 4 scanners hooked up to my 15 el 800 MHz yagi at 30 feet via a Stridsberg MCA204M coupler. The UCLA trunking site (1 only; all analog) is difficult to monitor at my location in Cerritos about 30 miles away. The system is really intended just to cover the area around UCLA and Westwoood in West LA.

The 996P2 and 996XT on will occasionally pick up the CC for a while, then drop out, and very few TGs are logged. The HP2 (HomePatrol 2 Extreme) does not even see the CC on its analyze feature. There is a 1-2 signal strength, but CC decode quality is zero. It picks up zero. The 536HP has reliably been locked on the CC all night, 2-3 bars, and ARC536PRO is full of TG hits with RSSI values of 250-350.

I have now seen this repeatedly on several weaker trunk sites from multiple systems here in LA, Orange County, and San Bernardino on UHF and 800 Mhz. On the stronger sites, all 4 scanners do well, but if you're into searching for weaker trunking systems/sites/TGs (I am a CW DXer at heart from back in the 1960s), the 536HP wins hands down. As an aside, none of my GRE/RS scanners listed below can touch the 436HP/536HP on 800 Mhz trunking.

These are all great scanners, and for many folks that just want to monitor one or two strong 800 Mhz trunk sites, I can recommend any of the 4, or perhaps even the Whister/RS. But if you are seriously into discovery trunking on UHF/800 Mhz, spend a little bit more and go for the 536HP. Again, I always caution, this is my experience only, and YMMV.

For those with more VHF interests, military aircraft monitoring, whatever, obviously there are different considerations. I think most of us into reasonably serious scanning have concluded that one scanner does not fit all situations. But my advice to all who are looking for one scanner, and whose primary interest is going to be UHF/800 Mhz trunking, that narrow-band FM filter in the x36HPs makes a difference.

I agree with Boatanchor, a well known RRDB poster, that all scanners should have an NFM filter, let them charge a few bucks more, the difference is incredible, at least here in radio-dense Southern California.

Has anyone tried to run their external speaker output to the Aux Input jack of the car stereo for sound instead of installing a separate external speaker?

Motorola MS250R Problems, Power shutting off

So I got these over a year ago but never really got to try them out until recently. I now have discovered they are crap. The slightest shock will kill the power. Such as lightly tossing them onto a table or on your dash. A simple slap in your hand will make them turn off. Which I'm sure everybody can understand the frustration if EVERY time you try to contact the other radio its turned off without the person knowing.



So I'm hoping you guys can help me troubleshoot the problem since I do not have any of the warranty left, and couldn't find the receipt even if I looked. These are basically brand new. I never got them wet, not even in the rain. I never dropped them in any way that would make you think something Internal would be knocked loose. There isn't a single scratch on the casing big enough for that. Both radios do exactly the same thing. They will do it at any battery level. I'm useing the supplied rechargeable batteries but have no tried it with AAA yet. I've looked over the battery connections and everything seems as it should. Nothing lose and the battery fits in snug.



I haven't gone any deeper then that into the radios. But I have no problem taking these completely apart if somebody wants to tell me to look for something. These are garbage if I cant fix them.

I just got a new scanner uniden BC355N had no problem in getting police freq. the problem I am having is with repeaters and hospital breaking in to freq. Local radio shop says that one of the tone sets that I need is: 726.8 / 688.3; however the minitor changes those entries to 726.9 / 688.7, no matter how I enter them. [Coding Option: R168(None); F1: 151.1750; 2 channel with voice store]



Any ideas how to get it to program the tone pair that the local radio shop thinks is correct?

Bcd536hp battery problem

So when I let the scanner run for a couple days it used to keep the charge and not need clock information for a while. However now that I have the wifi dongle plugged in even after letting it charge for a few days it will not keep the clock setting long. Only thing I changed is that the wifi dongle is plugged in.

I have a PSR800. I have noticed that while scanning, in the middle of a broadcast, broadcast stops, the icons at the top flash off/on. It only interrupts the broadcast for about one to two seconds. It then continues the broadcast. This occurs approximately every 20 seconds or so. Priority is not activated.



I would appreciate any help.

Power wire throught firewall Ford CV P71

I need to pull a wire from the engine compartment to a havis console. Im going from battery, to a 150amp cb in engine compartment then from cb to the console. I dont see anything in the firewall easy accessable. Being that its a police interceptor, the agency who owned it had to have run a power wire but nothing was left. Any ideas? Thanks.

With special thanks to the AMAZING folks at MPD Digital and their SMA to F Connector Cable, I was able to hook up my Winegard HD 7084P High Defintion VHF/UHF/FM TV Antenna (HD7084P) directly to my HomePatrol 2.



Before I hooked this up Monday thru Thursday was very boring on the scanner. NOW I can scan up to 30 miles and get CRYSTAL clear reception (I get a hit about every 10-15 seconds) SO much to listen to and the quality is incredible.

newbie can't escape search mode

My BCD396XT is stuck in some kind of search mode, i think; when I turn it on, it goes through Custom frequencies that I probably loaded when I added the Ham Radio frequencies from RR. I tried using my startup keys, my quick keys, but those keys are not responding, and all I get is Custom frequencies rolling by.



if I am correct in believing the scanner is doing searches, then how does one terminate the searches? I'm very new to this activity and find the learning curve surprisingly steep.

Hello all, recently Bartonville Police and Fire switched over to Harris P25 phase 2. I bought a Uniden BCD436 so I can monitor them and others that will soon be added in the Peoria,IL area. My problem is that I cant seem to catch every transmission and if I do its somewhat garbled even sometimes so bad it can't be understood. My signal strength is at 5 bars. Is there something I can do that will help, settings ETC.?

Baltimore County tower being moved? Precinct 12

Precinct 12 is eventually going to move to the Eastwood center closer to the City, it is being refurbished now for the police to move. Does anyone know if the tower located behind the current Precinct 12 station will be moved at all? It's fairly large, and seems a bit crazy to move 2 miles away, but the county is selling the property.

How did you program for MARCS?

Hope this fits in the Ohio forum and not the programming forum.



I was thinking about programing my Pro-651 with every frequency of the MARCS and MARCS-IP system so it will scan closest towers while traveling.

The problem that came up was my RadioShack scanner only has 32 available frequencies per system and the MARCS system has way more frequencies than that.

I could just make multiple systems that cover all of the frequencies and set them to the same scan list, but it seems like there should be a better way.

I know a RR subscription would probably make this easy, but it's not an option.



Does anyone have any tips on how they programed the MARCS system into their scanner?

Well, the AC Adapter on my 652 came apart (I have no idea how, but it did). I still have the DC power cord that came new with the scanner, and I had a plug to go in a cigarette lighter that I tried to use, but it does not power my scanner. I need a 12 V DC power supply, but a quick search of google yields results for numerous high-end models that are of no use to me. Ideas?

I noticed with the most recent license modification the FCC Station Class is FB, not FB2, which surprised me.



I always thought FB was simplex station to mobile and vice versa and not mobile signal relayed as a repeater or FB2.

Digital radio use at WDW

Hi everyone,



I know that this topic has been covered in the past, but in a way reposting it I am hoping to gain more insight and give real use of digital radio feedback at Disney World.



I have used Hytera DMR/TDMA portable radios at all the parks. This will be a 4 watt UHF portable radio talking radio to radio. The model numbers were PD362,602, and 682



At MK I had zero coverage issues. I was easily able to talk from mid park to my family member getting off the bus at the entrance of the park with zero problems. Range showed to cover all of the park.



At Epcot, I couldn't transmit from inside the LAND ride to someone outside. Every place else I had perfect coverage.



Studios and AK was perfect coverage



Has anyone use Icom IDAS or Kenwood Nexedge at the parks??

Thee are numerous software / cable options for the KG-UV8D. RT Systems for one. And Wouxun has software available for download. I've been having driver issues with the Wouxun software not communicating with the radio. Does anyone have recommendations for a viable software / cable combination that has worked for them?

VHF P7100 P25 fault

Okay, this is weird. Last night, my P7100 was working fine. P25 was coming in as clear as digital can be. Well, this morning, I reprogrammed the radio with an updated personality. When the radio rebooted, I get a FEAT ERR ERR=0553. Now, neither RPM or Radio Maintenance can read the radio. Oddly enough, it appears the radio can still decode P25. However, I can no longer see the feature options and the SYS, TRK, and CNV all show as 0.



Does anyone have any idea as to what might have happened?

I live in Warne, NC (Western North Carolina) in Clay county. I know that the Sheriff and the Fire Departments have gone over to digital. I Purchased a new Radio Shack Pro-668 on eBay. I have fiddled and fiddled with this radio and the only thing that I can hear is the NOAA Weather. I am a ham radio operator (N4OGQ) so I hooked up one of my old mobile 2 meter/70cm antennas on my deck. I have downloaded the VIPER Mobile Trailer System and VIPER Statewide P25 from RR .I am using Radio Shack PC Software 2.2 Build 310, CPU Firmware 2.3, DSP Firmware 1.3, Library Database 408, and Location Database 10. The software shows this all to be the latest version. I can't help but think I am leaving out some important step. I even put signal stalker on for the Public Safety Bands but am not hearing anything. Is there anyone out there who lives in Clay County North Carolina who is successfully receiving the Fire, EMS and Sheriff in this location?

Hello, I have been working on programming my Radio Shack Pro651.

I am using ARC500 software. So far I have some Conventional and 1 Trunk system programmed into it. I have prepared another new Trunk system to add to what I have already. I am using 6 scan list for every thing that is involved so far, scan list #6 will be the new list for the the new Trunk System.

How do I add the new Trunking system to what I have already programmed in ????

And end up with all six scan list numbers staying on solid while scanning ????

If I try to just Up Load it , it will over ride whats in the scanner. So how do I combine the two ????

Improving Quality of Feed ?

I'm looking into installing a compressor-limiter in my feeds. I've noticed quite a large variations in audio amplitude, maybe 20-25db depending on the specific channel on the radio, distance from person speaking to microphone, etc.



Like to get thoughts from those who've done this. It looks to me like there are two different approaches.



A hardware device such as :

Behringer: MULTICOM PRO-XL MDX4600



or software with virtual cable interface.

After customizing my 668 this weekend, I find that I've set something that prohibits my hearing all but a couple stations. I'd like to reset everything -- database, playlists, talk groups, sites, volume, lights -- so the 668 is configured just like it came out of the box new.



I've read every bit of information I could find here in the forum and searched the Internet, but I didn't recognize anything that would help.

I have been watching/looking at these budget radios above.



Question to the all-knowing about these radios...



Is the Wouxun at $120 worth more than the Baofeng at $35 ? That much more???



Is it a better radio by a factor of 4 ?? Build quality 4 times better?



And the most important question...Is the RX 4 times better???because from what I have heard the RX in these radios leaves a LOT to be desired and varies considerably depending on who's opinion you listen to.

The Rx can be terrible and intermod prone to "oh, it's simply wonderful".



A friend bought a Baofeng UV-5r , showed it to me last week. It was deaf, or nearly so, to most of the strong local repeaters. I was not impressed. So I am wondering if the build quality is better on the above/other radios.



"Oh but they are cheaper than a tank of gas for my truck!"



Wondering if I should get one or just fill up my gas tank and stay $$ ahead.

Breaking News from Scanner Master....

It is 10;30 AM Eastern Time, and I was just informed that the Scanner Master "Office" is closed today due to a FLU Outbreak, and my PSR-800 which arrived exactly 35 days/ 7 weeks ago, at their "Programming Department" is yet to receive their attention. That contradicts an E-mail last week advising that it was being shipped sometime during the business week of March 23rd-27th. I continued to check my debit account to make note whether the reprogramming/return shipping fees had been"posted" for payment to Scanner Master. A wonderful elderly gentleman took my call this AM, and advised me to call back tomorrow, when he assured me that the office would be staffed, flu or no flu.This is coming from someone who is eligible for FREE Flu Vaccinations from Medicare. My previous "Grading System" of a "D", has now been changed to an "F". Is my next course of action to contact the BBB in their area? I hope customer service issues are being tracked by the management of this web site, before accepting future advertising dollars. Respectfully Submitted, COLBRZ 1319.

Can anyone point me to where I can enable the quick keys int he HP2. I see the options for them in ARCPATROL and in earlier versions of Sentinel for other scanners but the HP-2 doesnt appear to have the ability to set quick keys in the favorites list area?

BCD436HP BATTERY ERROR

Major issue with this radio this morning...just started doing this. Late last night I plugged it in to charge, went thru the yes/no, it read 'normal charging' on the readout after plugging it in to AC adapter/surge. Got up this morning and went to switch on the scanner and the readout said 'battery error'...so I unplugged it to turn it on, dead in the water. Replugged it and it went thru the motions, read 'normal charging', but one minute later went to 'battery error'...I switched the batteries around making sure they were seated securely and tried it again. No change. I tried switching outlets on the AC surge protector, no change. I tried plugging directly into USB outlet on the surge protector, no change. Tried plugging USB directly into computer, no change. Took the brand new Duracells out of the radio and put in the backup pair I purchased with the radio. Tried all charging configurations. Got the same error after one minute of 'normal charging' it reverts to 'battery error' and will not charge. I might have a defective radio here. I cannot charge my radio for some reason.



Anybody know a cure for this bug, or do I need to call the doctor??

This relates to the Termn-8r rfadio in the software, I am having problems with. Not on the cable, win dows 7 recognized fine, just cetain perameters are "grayed out", rather than black boarder for change or modification. In the Msk encode window, The person id and the group id I can not change. I try rt click and lewft click and resultys the same.In th eembeded message, only two inputs are allowed it seems. The Radio type and the frequency. Only had radio for 2 days . Software from Anytone Tech.

Can the IP address of a 536HP scanner change? I haven't used my iPad Siren App for over a week. I tried to connect to the scanner this morning and couldn't. I checked the wifi info and found the the last digit of the scanner IP was off one digit from previous setting??? Why is this happening? Is that normal?

BCD536HP Transfer Data from SD card to another SD card

I need to ask help on this, I just bought a BCD536HP and it came with a 4 gb card that works great with the radio, but this is where I am having problems. Last year I bought a BCD436HP (Feb 2014) and was able to transfer Data from one card over to another in case the first card that was in the radio become corrupt, I could use the second as a back up and reformat the first one and start all over again.

I noticed now today, I bought a second SD card and when I try to download the Master Data base or even the updates that the BCD536HP needs the SD card that I plug into my PC wont connect or show up on the Sentinel Software that I have been running over last year. Now the major question and maybe Paul can answer this, I hope!!!

What happens when a SD card gets corrupt, you reformat it, and you but it into the scanner, and it becomes a message such as "SD card error process" and the scanner is useless?

Do I need to send in the SD card in or what? Last year I again could double the Data as a back up, but this year no go. Did Uniden write a update that wont let downloads to SD cards that are not in the radio, but are in a slot in the computer? Has anybody else had this problem? I can see the SD card under my computer and can transfer other items to the card, as far as the Sentinel Software, it just doesn't work. Anybody who can help, appreciated it. Thanks!!

MDC-1200 signaling question

I am having trouble with making a VX-451 respond (in OFF-duty mode) to open it's squelch window to further accept any other signals, albeit, audio or DTMF. I have created the necessary contact list ID's with alpha tags. The VX-451 transmits it's own ID fine, but will refuse to open it's squelch when receiving a SelCall from any other radio within it's group. I am not sure what I am missing here, as the Help files for ANY of the new eVerge radios are quite cryptic and vague.

Trunk System Help Needed

Hello, well I have been working for hours entering a Trunk system by hand, and all the Talkgroups with it.

I was getting very close to finishing up when I accidentally clicked on something at the bottom of the page as I was moving the mouse around.

Every thing in the ID Column disappeared . WOW what a bad lick.

Now I looked over at the left menu and by the Talkgroup title and the 200 plus is listed as there or some where.

I clicked on Talkgroup and nothing happened.

But the 215 Talk group is listed there by the word Talkgroup.

How can I may be bring them back ????

That was a lot of work.

I was going to save the Talkgroup when I finished , and that happened.

I heard on my BCD536HD the other day on 773.2937 audio which is IDENTICAL to the encrypted stuff I hear on Redding Police (Shasta County) Tactical 2. Am I correct in assuming that CHP now has the option to encrypt transmissions on their P25 700 extendars?

Has anyone heard radio traffic on these new channels? I currently have the old State Police (UHF) programmed in my scanner and hear stuff once in awhile. I'm thinking if I leave the modulation set to "auto" and audio option to "search" (as I have the 700 Mhz frequencies set), I should pick up P25 traffic on the 400 Mhz as well?

I don’t know if this topic has been addressed previously, and forgive me if it has, but I haven’t been able to find anything pertaining to whether or not LAPD has any plans in the immediate future (within the next 5 years) to move to a Phase 2 system. I want to buy a new scanner and the answer to this will determine which scanner I buy. I’d hate to buy an “older” scanner if the switch will happen a year from now. Other than the Phase 2 issue, there is NO difference between the Home Patrol 1 and Home Patrol 2 (other than the use of USB power on the HP2) and the BCD996XT and the new BCD996HP2.

436HP serial/mass storage prompt

I'm trying to plan installing my 436hp in my car and it seems like there is an annoying issue. I would want the scanner to power on and off with the car and would feed it accessory power which would go on and off with the car. I would then remove the batteries. The scanner seems to power on when I reapply power but each time I get the annoying serial/mass storage prompt. Is there any way to eliminate this? Seems to be the only thing in the way of giving me what I want

My 700p has the WA scan feature and does scan when unable to lock onto a CC, but it only seems to lock on to one freq set and not on any of the other freq sets, depending on the area I'm in. I have the correct freq sets and site #'s as well because by non scanning radio's work on the other sets. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Pro-668: phase 2 decode problems

Hi,



Really enjoying my new 668. I noticed that when I attempt to listen to a p25 tdma p2 system, the voice kind of warbles and the volume fluctuates making it hard to understand. I thought it may be a signal problem but I have tried from many different physical locations outside with no difference. The signal meter is showing a solid 3 or 4 bars so I am not convinced its the signal.



Are there any other adjustments I can tweak to make this work?

1974 Scanner reference for MOVIE PROP

Hi,



I am the propmaster on a film that takes place in 1974. There is a scene where a character gets a police scanner. I was wondering when you acquired a scanner around this time (I currently have a Regency of the right time period) did they come in packaging / a box? Does anyone have a photo of what the 1974 regency scanner box would look like, how it was packaged, etc? We see the character opening it up in the scene.



I was also wondering, is it likely at all a police station would have a scanner or was it strictly for hobbyists? What sort of police radio transmitters would a chief of police have in his office?

Kirkwood PD/Fire changes?

In an effort to "keep up" with what is going on back there from out here in Tacoma, I tried to listen to the online feed of these services via the Radio Reference/Broadcastify online feed both last night and again this morning. In both instances all I got was digital noise. Have these departments changed to a digital (P25?) mode or might there be some inadvertent change in the settings on the receiver providing the feed?

I have a Pro 2096 and got Lancaster County's new P25 programmed in a bank. Problem is it shows the bank name and not the talk group name when it receives communications. Pro-668: New Radio - Help Getting it to Work

I have just purchased a new Radio Shack Pro-688 and I can't get it to receive anything but the National Weather Service. I live in Clay County, North Carolina. I have tried programming in my zip code 28909 and it comes up with a several playlist but nothing works, nada, zip. I know the Sheriff and the FD have switched over to Digital. I am pretty sure they are on Viper and I have gone in and selected the Chunky Gal Site for Clay County. I even installed an outside mobile 2 meter/70cm antenna outside on my deck. This is my first time using a Digital Trunked Scanner and I am frustrated that I can't get anything to work with the exception of the local NOAA radio. I am using PC Software 2.2 Build 310, CPU Firmware 2.3, DSP Firmware 1.3, Library Database 408, and Location Database 10. The software shows this all to be the latest version. I have been a HAM for over 28 years and can't believe I am having so many problems programming a scanner. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

Hello, I finally got a nice size list of Conventional Frequencies loaded into my Radio Shack Pro651 scanner.

I am using ARC500 software. Thought I would get some of these up and running before I take on a Trunking system. Every thing seems to be doing ok , I just dont hear much out of all the frequencies I have in the scanner. I am using 4 scan list at this time. Scanner is scanning and scan list numbers are staying lit and solid.

All frequencies are assigned to a scan list.

Here is how the rest of the list is set up. Some of these I set and some were set automatically by program, those of which I really dont know what they mean.

Those setting are :

SQ Mode----None or P25-----set autmatoically

Led Mode----Solid

Does this look normal ????

I dont have any thing to compare it to. Could just be my location of the scanner at this time. Just checking.

I also noticed that during the entry of all these frequencies , I could not enter any (SQ Code-PL Tones)

or (SQ Mode---CTCSS or DEC) but when I finished the program put some figures and letters in some of the boxes. I guess the program may have blocked me from putting any info in these boxes.

Any thoughts/suggestions about the easiest way to remove the MicroSD card from the PRO-668? I assume it just pulls straight out but what should you use to get a hold on it without damaging it? I don't see the specific card removal instructions covered in either the PRO-668 owner's manual or the WS1080 owner's manual.

I have noticed that on my pro-668 when listening to p-25 transmissions phase 2 signals are much louder

in volume than phase 1 signals. The agc is on and phase 1 and analog volumes are the same but phase 2

comes blasting in nearly double the volume. I have the same problem on 3 different systems so it's obviously

scanner related. Has anyone else notices this? If so anyone have any way of fixing in with any settings?

Windows 10 Compatibility

Has anyone tried Sentinel or any of the other packages on Windows 10 yet? So far I only have the Windows 10 Technical Preview running in a vm on my Mac and not connected externally. I was thinking about installing it in a vm on my Windows 8.1 laptop and trying out Sentinel since it's what I use but thought I'd check and see if anyone has already tried. Thought it might gut save some time if there are issues.

I decode DMR with a dongle, SDR# and dsdplus with virtual cable, using a directional beam antenna. I can decode Rogers county with no problems.



I would like to use this setup to decode NXDN in Claremore. When monitoring 460.4625 Mhz and 460.0625 Mhz, the scrolling screen indicates that I am receiving NXDN96 cs data and tb voice. However, no audio is heard.



If anyone is using this setup successfully I would appreciate knowing all the settings you use in SDR# and dsdplus.

Pro-652 Losing memory

As stated in the user manual, I connected the scanner to an ignition power source. It is turned on and off with the key. The problem I am having is it seems to be losing some memory. I have only noticed it on 2 different banks where I have P25 frequencies programmed. When I turn it on and try to scan the banks, it tells me nothing is enabled, but still has the frequencies in the system. I upload the programming list back to the scanner and it corrects the problem for a short time and then does it again. Any help would be appreciated.

536HP vs 996P vs HP2 on trunking CCs

Again, I must preface this post by saying that the 536HP, 996P2, and HomePatrol 2 with Extreme are all very nice scanners, each with particular features that different folks will find particularly useful for their given situation.

This post/thread focuses on 800 MHz trunking control channel performance. Again, I live in the center of the LA Basin, on the Orange County line, and I can regular monitor conventional in LA, Orange, SBDO, Riverside, Ventura, and often San Diego County. Trunking is limited to the first four counties (that I can manage to decode).

San Bernardino County has several sites. Sites 06/07, 08 (Mountains), and 9 (Aerojet) (Motorola Type 2 Smartnet, Analog). can be monitored here. All are in 850-865 Mhz range, and the adjacent interference on almost all channels is horrific from all kinds of signals in every direction. Tonight, I ran my 536HP (A), 996P2 (B), and HomePatrol 2 Extreme (C) through MCA204M coupler to my 800 Mhz 15 el TerraWave Yagi at about 25 feet.

Site 8 (Mountains) is the strongest, including the CC, and A, B, and C receive this site well. Solid CC decode and great audio quality on all 3 scanners. This site is about 45-50 miles away, up in mountains, and I can easily monitor from some places in my house using an RS-800.

Site 06/07 and 9 are have weaker CCs here in Cerritos, and the adjacent QRM is incredible. The 536HP shows less signal strength on the CCs, but basically does the best job of decoding these sites.

The 996P2 picks up more crud, but reasonably will pick up the CC on 06/07 and shows the site ID on hold. However, the 536HP picks is consistently better on 06/07, and will also pick up some stuff on site 9 (Aerojet) that the 996P2 cannot lock onto.

The HP2 shows the strongest signals on the analyze feature for 06/07 and 9. However, the quality is zero. HP2 does great on site 8 (the strong site), but on 06/07 and 09, the quality (middle yellow on analyze screen) shows zero. The signals are reading 7 to 8 but the quality is zero. In other words, its just adjacent interference crud.

So on this "let's pick up the CC out of the crud test" here in So. Calif, the 536HP does best, the 996P2 does OK (probably about same as my 996XT has in the past), and the HomePatrol 2 needs a good strong CC for it to do its thing. Again, YMWV depending on your needs and locations.

This particular post does not address P25 quality, but for all but very weak (0-1 bar) P25 stations, all three of the above scanners are great.

sub 19" dual band NMO mount antenna?

Is there such a thing as a sub 19" dual band NMO mount antenna? I realize such a thing would have no gain.



Or alternatively an 19" with a soft spring?



I have a mag mount on top of my Suburban that I will be replacing with a NMO mount soon but I already scrape the garage door with the mag mount and the 19" NMO I typically use has about 4-5 inches of coil and short whip with little flex, I think it would get bent so I'm looking for other ideas. I have a Larsen NMO 2/70 that I can easily switch to for road trips or other cases when I may want more range than the little antennas offer so I'm not too worried about the limitations of the little guys.

I'm wanting an antenna with decent gain that I can permanently mount to the roof and fold down for travel, fold up when parked. I know I want it up on the roof and not down on the bumper. I know my roof is covered in white rubber, I have no idea what is under that rubber. The camper is only a few years old. I can seal the hole but I'm not sure about antenna model, ground plane or mount.



I usually do NMO mounts on the roof of my cars but I've never messed with folding mounts. What types of antennas do you like for this application? I don't have to stick to the typical 19" like I usually run in town. When I need more on my NMO mounts I usually switch to the Larsen NMO 2/70.



Any suggestions for folding mounts for the roof of a camper, possibly no ground plane, with some gain?

BCD436HP on Charlottesville 800 sys

Does anyone else have the BCD436HP in the Charlottesville area and is monitoring the 800 system?



I'm having heck of a time with choppy audio on all talkgroups. I have the squelch set to '2'; Regardless of whether I'm using the stock uniden antenna or a bnc antenna with the adapter, I still get choppy audio. Sounds like "ee, ott, oot, oop" at various times during the transmission.



For what it's worth, I can get the Virginia STARS P25 Phase 1 system no problem great audio.



I have heard and it's confirmed that the GRE PSR-500 that is listening to the same systems has much better receiver sensitivity and audio than the BCD436HP. I'm just trying to get the 436HP to work well! Too much to ask?! Thanks as always for any help.

Database Policy Clarification

I have searched the information about submitting database info, read the Wiki about submitting info and would like some definitive clarification about submitting info to the database. I found some frequencies on the FCC database for a local PS (SO) agency that I was unaware that were issued to said agency. I monitor them when I can, but I have never heard anything on them. However, I cannot listen to them all the time. So, I submitted them to the database and they were rejected because I could not personally verify them. The license is good for a few more years. My question has to do with verifying FCC database info with the RR database. I have in the past, cross checked license info on the RR database with the FCC database to check for errors and what not. There have been instances where the info does not match. I'll give a for instance. There is a local agency that uses a Provoice EDACS system exclusively. The frequencies on the RR database do not match the FCC database. There are 2 or 3 more frequencies assigned to this agency on the FCC database. As it is a Provoice setup I cannot personally verify that the agency in question is using ALL the frequencies on the FCC database, however, if I scan through them in conventional mode, I hear digital noise on all of them. So I assume they are being used by the EDACS system that they are licensed to. Also, who and how are frequencies verified as being "deprecated" if the FCC data is not OK to use for info? There are lots of VHF and UHF frequencies that I never hear anything on, however a search on the FCC database shows them as still valid and licensed. Some have been let go (released). So, if I listen to a frequency for a year and don't hear any activity on it that, that does not mean it has been deprecated unless the license has not been renewed on the FCC database. I see this as a "catch 22" for lack of better words. Any clarification of the rules for submitting info the database would be appreciated. Thank you

Charlottesville-Project 16 to Project 25?

So, I'm kind of confused here and looking for an educated guess. While doing research on various radio system around the commonwealth of va, I've seen that Fairfax and at least Roanoke used to have Project 16 (Motorola Smartnet systems, same thing Charlottesville has) and they went to Project 25 Phase 1 systems. I also know that Albemarle has recently purchased APX6000 and APX6500 radios. I also know that the current Motorola 800 MHz Smartnet system has reach End-of-life Motorola specifications.



So, what I'm wanting to know is logically speaking, would it make sense for Albemarle/Charlottesville/UVA to upgrade to a Project 25 Phase 1 system or Project 25 Phase 2 FDMA/TDMA system? Best educated guess? I know that the government doesn't always make the best decisions, but we won't go there :cool:

BCD436HP Mot Smartnet Recieving Issue

Hello Everyone,



I'm having a heck of a time with off and on correct receiving of a Motorola simulcast 800 MHz system. The audio keeps getting choppy of and on. I have a RadioShack 800 MHz antenna on top of the sma adapter that came with the scanner. I have squelch set to "2". P25 Waiting time for the one site that we have is set to 200ms.



Is there a default setting that, if you're locality has a Motorola smartnet simulcast system, your settings should be (x, y and z)? I'm about ready to pull my hair out!



FYI, I'm receiving VA Stars Virginia State police no problem what so ever.

This is my first Uniden raido so I am not familiar at all with the menu system or programming. An included manual would have been nice...

Was advised FreeSCAN is the best way to program this radio so this is the only software I have used on it.

Wondering if I am doing this right. (I only have non-trunking conventional frequencies I plan to program in)

If I do not assign a "quick key" to a group will it scan anyways by default? Having only 10 quick keys I imagine I will eventually run out of them as I continue to add frequencies.



Is there a way to turn a group on/off besides the "Locked out" check box in FreeSCAN?



What is the easiest way to setup close call to run and log all active frequencies it finds?

Say I want to leave it running all day while I am working and be able to check a log of all the active frequencies it has found for the whole day.

I do have an extra computer I am planning on dedicating to the scanner, so I will be leaving it connected to it 24/7.

I went with my brother to a house owned by the father of one of his friends. The man had recently passed, and after selling the house, they needed to clear everything out by next Tuesday. So I managed to buy tons of electronics. I will get the specifics later, but I got 2 Cobra 148GTL radios. A Cobra 29LTD, and I noticed it is made in the Phillipines, some have told me that those were louder radios, but I dont know first hand. I found a 23ch Regency, a Johnson Messenger, an old Radioshack of some sort, and something I have never seen, an automotive AM/FM/Cassette with a built in 23ch CB transceiver. Unfortunately, I do not have mics to fit the 148s.



Aside from CB stuff, I picked up many old radar detectors, bag phones, a mint condition GMDelco AM only radio, a very old Ford Philco AM only, some portable AM/FM radios, one with an 8-track player, old satellite receivers, an 8mm video camera, a home stereo with a built in 8track and turntable, and probably more I forgot to mention. I think I did good today.

New antenna question, help needed

Hey guys, first post here,



I need some advice on a new antenna i'm planning to get. I've decided that my old discone needs updating. It's a cheap one i got a good few years ago, and i just feel it's time to upgrade. I'm also going to be buying a USRP B200 SDR - after experimenting, and really enjoying the RTL-SDR dongles, i want to move up to a more sophisticated SDR.



The two antennas i've narrowed it down to are the ICOM AH-8000 Discone or the Diamond X-700H. I'll primarily just be browsing through the bands looking for things to listen too, such as airband, mil air, VHF/UHF, decoding digital etc, but i when i finally get round to getting my Ham License, i'll likely be doing some TX'ing too. I don't really know what would be the best antenna for general listening. What would give me the best range? My current discone is already mounted about 50ft high, and i know the Diamond is an absolute beast of an antenna size wise, but is it, or would it do, better than the Icom?



Also the Icom is a wideband antenna, going all the way up to 3.3ghz or so, and the B200 can tune up to 5.9ghz, but is there really anything to listen to that high, barring wifi signals and the sorts? I really just don't know what to choose.



Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A client of mine purchased a WS1065, Has issues right out of the box when he programmed it with ARC 500 pro. The radio will not receive even on an active frequency or squelch unless pll is programmed, He brought me the radio. I own 4 GRE600's, one is a live feed scanner here, so im very familiar with it. I re did the program and get the same result. I tried 3 different software packages and cannot rectify the problem. I updated the firmware to 2.8, just in spite of it and it changed nothing. Static is there antenna or not, it will also not do a search as it stops on first freq. In 25 years of scanning I have never seen this. Anyone have a suggestion?

I overheard an Buffalo inbound SWG flight a few weeks ago call their Toronto Ops. when they couldn't raise anybody at Buffalo. The conversation quickly turned into "We'll try to sort that out for next week". That was early February and I haven't had a chance to do any searching since.



I think it was Prior they had tried that one time I caught something.

BCD996XT Sound issues Back Ports

I have had my 996xt for about 3 years. I have the extension speaker port hooked up to a external speaker and the record port hooked up to my computer to host a feed. The other day I realized that not only was there sound coming out of my external speaker but the scanners internal speakers were also transmitting. I turned the unit off and back on and unplugged the speaker and back in to no avail. So instead I plugged the external speaker into the front jack and the volume is so much lower then it was when plugged into the rear jack and the internal speakers are no longer transmitting. Now I have a another issue I noticed today. The line out jack that is going to my computer sounds like it is messed up. Every time there is a transmission it sounds like it is distorted which never used to happen. The sound is not replicated on my external speaker. So i am starting to think that both of the rear jacks are blown out or are having some sort of issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Air Traffice Scanning in NJ w/Uniden 436HP

So I just got my 436HP and would like to put in some air traffic channels. I tried pulling a few out of the NJ database for my 436HP but when i try to scan that list it says "nothing to scan". I've posted in the uniden forum and am awaiting some help. [[fixed by turning on aircraft in system types]]



Does anyone have any good suggestions on how best to scan Aviation in Northern NJ? I like to hear tower traffice, approach and departure. I listen on-line via liveatc.

2014 Ford Escape Questions

In the past, in both my 2006 Ford Fusion and this 2014 Escape, I used a combination of Uniden BCT-15 and the remote head on a ProClip brand center console mount. These setups were excellent for so many years.



Now, I have purchased the Uniden BCD536HP and am quite lost on how to install this into my '14 Escape. It is a lease but several of my ideas involve a small amount of drilling (glove box?).



I really am lost on where to put this thing and still be able to reach it, safely, on the road. Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

ok, I have recently purchased a Uniden Bearcat 396xt, i have programmed it via freescan and uploaded systems and groups, which now all of quick keys for the systems and groups. I have also uploaded a few truck systems which it appears Davidson county in TN uses. My question is I hear nothing! it scans, and scans and nothing for hours and even days. So clearly i am doing something wrong? I just don't know what it could be? getting very frustrated here!

Icom: New D-Star Capable Radio

I recently purchased an Icom IC-9100 that came with the digital card. After I got all the filters I ordered, I sat down and installed everything and it all appears to be working fine.



The closest VHF D-Star repeater is 150 miles away. There's one op with some type of UHF setup only 60 miles away. So, it looks like if I ever work digital, it will probably be HF.



I found a listing of a digital HF net on the IC-9100 Yahoo group and will try that some time but I am wondering where digital HF ops hang out on the bands. Does anyone know if someone has posted a list of digital HF frequencies? If not, where would they hang around, top, middle or bottom of the band?



I appreciate any hints or tips.

Pro-668: Need help fixing a pairing/driver issue for the Pro 668

Recently I purchased a RadioShack Pro 668 digital scanner. Not until yesterday did I ever decide to use the RadioShack software to upload current RR talk groups/frequencies. I have only used the SD Micro card pre-downloaded info to scan.



My problem occurred immediately when trying to pair the scanner to the computer. A icon at the lower right hand side popped up saying that the device is not recognized. So now I cannot upload any new frequencies into the scanner due to this error. The USB driver update says that there is no drivers uploaded to the device; hence why it cannot recognize it as a product. RadioShack also does not have the drivers to download via online so im screwed with that.



Can someone please help me? I've contacted RadioShack's Live Support and they referred me to here. They did make mention that it MAY work if I go ahead and purchase a external SD micro card reader cause it will be bypassing the scanner all together which is not needed in the process of uploading frequencies and changing characteristics on the scanner.

HP2 on Road Trip to Dallas

The HP-2 usually sits next to the HP-1 in the shack, but I had occasion to drive up to Dallas yesterday and was (again) very pleased with the HP-2 performance, GPS tracking and overall ease of use while mobile.



Before I left, I used Sentinel to ensure that I had the latest DB, wrote it to the scanner and then snapped the HP-2 into the mobile mount in the vehicle.



I feed the audio into my vehicle's stereo using the "Line Out" into the AUX jack of the stereo and use an external antenna. The GPS puck sits down on the console and has no problem getting GPS lock.



I know that reads like a commercial, but I couldn't be happier with the setup at home and in the car. I am definitely a fan.

TYT UVF10 - a few questions.

Greetings all !



I'd just like to clear up a few questions about these rigs.



(For once, it's not about formats / codecs etc, that's all sorted out).



1) Does the UVF10 have a clock ? If so does it work properly ! My Zastone is a joke. Gains 3 hours

in an hour and makes the checking of the text messages a bit of a pain when they are time important.

I can't stand crap clocks ;-)



2) I read somewhere that someone claimed the VHF rx was deaf, can anyone confirm this ?





I managed to get the software for this rig finally installed. Very odd as it would only let enter UHF

frequencies.



Yet I downloaded on this forum a set up file and as if by magic the VHF frequencies are programmable.

What the heck is all this about ?

Trunk Lip Mounting on Multiple Cars

I am in the process of finding a new car, and I'm looking at 2014 Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion and a few other models. I was wondering if any one has any of these cars and have installed on a trunk lip mount on the trunk since the trunks are slightly curved, not flat looking. I have also thought a L bracket may work, but I don't want to drill into the new car for this, so if it can be done without this, then that'd be perfect!



Any help or pictures would be greatly appreciated!

Trouble Receiving 800mhz

I just purchased the st-2 antenna and have mounted it to the roof of my house probably near 30 feet high.

The st-2 works great on receiving conventional frequencies both close by and further away.

The issue i have is that anything on the 800 band will not come in. At the best the scanner will stop on a frequency, and make a little noise but nothing resembling a voice. The 800 MHZ system i am trying to reach is from my town, and neighboring towns- nothing crazy and nothing far away.

I am able to pick up these same 800 frequencies with my radioshack 800mhz antenna pretty well.

The St-2 is connected by the 50 feet of coax it came with and is connected to a Radio Shack Pro-651.

I have tried using attenuation with no success, and if it matters I am in Rhode Island trying to pull in Glocester PD. (Not Gloucester)

Any idea on what i can do to improve my 800 reception with this antenna. It seems as if the problem is with the antenna, as the Radio Shack 800 mhz antenna works well receiving the 800mhz transmissions. I want to use the st-2 antenna because of its good performance with the conventional frequencies.

The scanner shows the frequency at almost full signal when it locks on, but with no voice to be heard.

Can't Program PSR-500 To Save My Life - Help

So i'm about fed up trying to program this scanner, i bought it used on eBay and also purchased an FTDI programming cable on eBay. It said it is the same as the RS 20-546 cable, just technically not the real radioshack branded one. I'm wondering if my issues are stemming from that... So i would like to ask a few questions.



In order to upload to the scanner, do i have to go into the GLOB settings, then Clone Send: then select that and then plug the cable in, in order to do communication? Because if i just plug the cable in it doesn't do anything. It stays scanning and it can't communicate. Furthermore, i am not able to do a CPU update. I put it into CPU update mode, and it still says "Wait for PC/IF" and the CPU updater can't establish communication.



The most communication i have gotten is downloading my current PSR-500 configuration. I have done that successfully, but have not been able to ever upload. The only way i was able to download was to do the procedure above, where i go into the GLOB settings and then put it into Clone Send mode. If i do this again, i can't get the upload to work.



I bought a pro 164 on ebay that was heavily used, and this cable won't do any communication with it either, but since it's been kind of abused i figured that PC/IF jack was bad. Now though, i am questioning the cable.... i dont know guys, what do you think? The fact it won't even communicate to do a CPU update is suspicious, and the fact it won't communicate with the other scanner is also suspicious. Surely they BOTH aren't bad PC/IF jacks. So anyway any insight would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
