please dumb down DSD!

i'm an avid scanner hobbiest and my town went NXDN a couple years ago, I have no idea how to tap any of my radios or use DSD to listen to it. what little I do know i learned by reading quite a few of the post on here, having said that it is still very much above me to make this happen.

SO....

is it worth paying to have the tap put in and will I be able to monitor the PD and FD in my town by doing this?
