The SRC Commissioners have approved the funds to upgrade the old VHF/UHF radio system. According to the meeting agenda, the new system submitted by Motorola Solutions is a 700/800Mhz APCO TDMA system. They are looking at having the system up and running by Jan 2016. What wasn't mentioned in the news was Escambia County is also coming onboard via a Interlocal Agreement between Santa Rosa and Escambia for shared use of communications infrastructure. Escambia just paid several million dollars to upgrade there system to UHF P-25 Conventional in 2011. This summer they requested an additional 3.7 million to further upgrade there system. I'm sure the residents of Escambia are unaware since there has been no media coverage on the subject.
Currently Escambia Sheriff is using encryption and word is Santa Rosa will also be using encryption once they get on the new system. So come January you will need a Phase 2 scanner to monitor what is not encrypted in the area.
