Since there have been several questions recently about the 436 backlight settings, here's a short tutorial on how to set it up.
Scanner Menu - Display Options - Set Backlight - Set Mode
Under Squelch, select Open Squelch.
Under Keypress, select 5 Seconds.
Under Timeout, select Infinite.
When you first turn on the scanner, the backlight will light up while a transmission is being received, and it will also light up for 5 seconds when you press any key or rotate the selector knob. This is the preferred behavior when running on batteries.
BUT
If you tap the power button, the backlight will stay on until you tap the power button again, or you shut the scanner down. This is the preferred behavior when running the scanner on external power, like in a car or as a base station.
You switch between backlight modes simply by tapping the power button.
