Stolen Vehicle failing to yield to Broomfield PD
Broomfield PD is pursuing a fleeing Bronze Mazda Protege, plate 977GNV. Apparently the vehicle failed to yield to a routine traffic stop. The vehicle is currently on Main street, the original officer stopped pursuing. The car has no front headlights. The vehicle is coming up as stolen from Arvada.
TGID 5360
Yesterday, someone was broadcasting a documentary on the Manhattan Project on TGID 5360 on the Seattle-King County Public Safety trunked system. Anyone knows what gives? Anyone knows what this talkgroup is normally used for?
Fire en-route traffic Loveland?
I have an older scanner, a BC296D I bought recently on eBay and I have had mild to bad reception listening to towers; Bald, Loveland and Horsetooth. I have tried different antennas and I seem to get better results with an old VHF antenna. My external cell antenna works really well though. My question: When I hear fire or ambulance paged I never seem to hear them say "en-route" any more. Are they using MDT to tell dispatch that they are en-route now or what? Maybe my bad reception is making me miss traffic, I don't know. I plan on buying a GRE pre amp as I couldn't even hear anything in the car. I tried adjusting audio quality to its lowest setting too! What gets me is that commercial and ham radio repeaters come in better than public safety!
washington county/uhp
have gotten two transmissions today on ucan from washington county on my home patrol one scanner.both show cedar city /uhp.signals loud and clear.monitoring from SLC.
J-Pole
I want to build a J-Pole for 1090 MHz, but the small size and only 1/4 inch separation from the element to the stub is creating a rather difficult problem, as I was planning on using brass compression tee, and 3/8 copper tubing.
As I understand it, the J-pole is resonant on its designed frequency as well as its harmonic frequency (f*3).
Would it work to design one for 363 Mhz, which would be larger, and use it on the harmonic for 1090 Mhz?
Also, all the coax coils used to prevent the feedline from radiating in the diagrams are for 2M (5 loops). What would the formula be for 1090 MHz?

FIre Tone Out quit working
I've had my 536HP set on FTO for the past few weeks. It seems to be working. The past 2 nights at 6:30 when I normally get my nightly radio test I get the announce tone and a small bit of the audio tone then the squelch snaps shut and I hear nothing. I know this has been working as I have heard the entire nightly test in the past.
I have been receiving alerts on the other departments that I am also FTO monitoring and have only noticed this on the nightly test. I've got the recording feature turned on so after tomorrows test I'll pull down the recordings and see what I've got. Very strange 2 nights In a row.
I will have my other scanner on at 6:30 to see exactly what happens

Bibb County RR Live Audio vs My Scanner
Bibb County of Live Audio Feed thru RR not on my Scanner.
What am I doing wrong? I got RR's live feed for Bibb County, Ga. I download the systems from RR and I do not hear the traffic. Do I have wrong frequenies, settings, etc.
I'm using 396xt. I live in WR and south Bibb county; therefore I expect to hear the traffic. What is the difference between the my scanner & the RR live online feed? I uploaded a FreeScan file under another
thread (396xt Help) in the hopes that I may be able to compare my settings with any individual's more experienced scanner setting (you know - someone who actually hears something). I just located the "Easier to Read Uniden XT Scanner Manuals". I am willing to do the work, read, experiment, etc.; but I feel that I at least need some guidance (coach/mentor) to help this "grasshopper" start this journey. I have uploaded my FreeScan File under another thread - 396xt Help. Maybe that will show what I am doing wrong.
Thank you for responding.

hello
Hello Members,
I am a brand new member to scanning and don't know a thing. The cape cod times stopped printing the Falmouth court reports which was the only means of keeping track of what the local knit wits are up to, which is why I'm here. Haven't bought a scanner yet but will be sometime in the near future. Need to do my DD before purchasing but would welcome any suggestions. Thanks.

Next Meeting Date: Sunday 04-27-14 Or 05-04-2014
As people may have already read, Bearcatrp has a new 436HP and is going to bring it to our next meeting. I want to do this after Easter and before Mother's Day, so that leaves either Sunday, April 27, 2014 or May 4, 2014. I would likely do it in the afternoon at the Eagan Davannis again because hey seemed pretty accommodating to us. Anyway, does anybody here, that might be interested in attending, have any preference on one date or the other? Please post your preference here.

Ottawa - Canadian Tire Center LTR system
Good day,
Is this system still active? I attended a hockey game last week-end and brought the scanner with me at the rink. I never heard a thing. I programed the system with the info I got from Canadian Tire Centre Trunking System, Ottawa, Ontario - Scanner Frequencies. Was the system abandoned when ScotiaBank Place was renamed Canadian Tire Center?
Thanks.

How do I load WSP with ARC300 programmer?
Hi all, I'm new to the programming part of this. I have a Radio Shack PRO-164 that had firmware v. 1.04 so I updated it to v. 1.10 and it lost all programmed frequencies even though it said it would not. I got ARC300 to program with and upgraded my membership here and put most everything I want back on but I can't find WSP (Washington State Patrol) through the software. I found it listed on RR at "US - Washington - State Patrol" and it's listed as "Agency" not a "County" so it doesn't show up in the list. How do I program WSP?
I don't see any trunking so I can imput the info manually but assumed it would be automated like the rest.
Thanks,
Guidoco
And thank to all the posters that got me this far.

BCD436HP BCD436HP Case
I apologize if this has been discussed before, I did a search and couldn't find anything.
Is there a nylon case in development that will be released soon or is there one available now for the BCD436HP?
Usually, I can find cases on Scanner Master, but are there other vendors that sell model-specific scanner cases?
Thanks for your help

BCD536HP audio stops working
We have 2 new BCD536HP scanners for our radio feed. The scanners work fine for awhile, but then after a day or two there is no audio. I have the channels for our feed on "hold" as that was the quickest way I could figure out to get only the channel I wanted. If I take the channel off of hold and it stops again for radio traffic it will work for a day or two then nothing. Restarting the scanner doesn't help, nor does switching to a different channel and coming back. The only thing that works is removing the hold to let it hear something. I have a picture in our "shack" photos of what the screen looks like with the channels on "hold"
Any advice to keep these running?

Pro-106 wont Scan
I updated my scanner about 6 months ago. ever since my scanner will not scan/receive when plugged to external power, however when it using batteries its fine I've tried on both my Ac and Dc cords. Any ideas? I need probably take it back to radio shack but since its several years old I don't think I'll get ant where with them, so I thought posting on here might be a better idea.

Does anyone out there have a single map that shows the districts/zones of the Phoenix Police? I found them for the DPS and county sheriffs - but nothing for the police.

Programming MTX 9250 Help!!!!
My friend and I both have MTX9250s, we are needing to program them for ham use.
he has bought two different cables off of ebay (one USB and one comm cable) both of our radios with both of those cables using CPS 2.00.02 get the error "incomplete response from radio."
Wondering if it was an issue with the cables he had I purchased a cable for my Motorola RIB. I got the new cable in today and I am still received the same error. Wanting to make sure it was not a ribless cable I hooked it up to a DB9 to DB25 converter and got the error saying to check and make sure the RIB was connected.
So, any ideas where to go from here?
Thanks for the help! I've never had so many issues trying to program any of my /\/\ radios before!

Difference between AirNav 3d and Pro
So am going to be springing for the AirNav Radar box, what I want to know is their any major differences between the 3d and pro, other then the fact of 3d imaging. I see the pro version is about 200 cheaper so just wanted some feedback. I have already gotten DPD production antenna for ADS-B.

Northern AZ Wildland Fire Feed is Active
I have a full time Wildland Fire Only Scanner feed running from Flagstaff, using an external discone. Im hearing both Secret and Boulder right now. The link is Northern Arizona Wildland Agencies The feed will remain active until the end of the fire season. Feed is hosted by FLAGscanner.com where you can find other feeds from inside Coconino County.
On a side note, the frequencies I have programmed in the scanner are a couple years old, and might need updating as we get new frequency info for this season.

Wild Hog Canoe Race
I am orginizer for the Wild Hog Canoe Race here in Central FL.
Welcome to WildHogCanoeRace.com
It is a grueling 15 mile race down a classic Florida stream in the middle of a swamp! So much fun. Anyway, the goal is to put GoPro's at specific points down the river, and beam audio/video live to the finish line where the spectators can view it on a large screen. Here's my difficulty. I've never done this.
After digging around on the net without finding very many answers, I came across this forum.
Although the river is 15 miles, the longest distance we would be sending the video is 6 miles. however, most of that distance is thick jungle.
So, what kind of transmitters, receivers antennas, etc would you recommend? If at all possible, I would want it to be full HD. Our budget (not including the cameras) is around 5k.
Any help would be very much appreciated, or if you could point me to the correct place to ask a question like this.
Thank you!

Thought this might help some using a Hompatrol mobile. I bought an I-home portable speaker and it works well when using the homepatrol in the car. Sounds really good!

Can anyone help me understand this? I know that if there is a unit in the area, the system will route his talkgroup through my local towers, but is that the only way it can happen? Curious.
Boulder Valley School District, campus VHF radios
Based on recent scanning it appears the Boulder Valley School District might have taken a bunch of VFH radios "out of service", which were used for on-site campus operations, such as WPSH885. They are still definitely using VHF radios for school bus fleets, and of course they are using DTRS TG 9539 for Security at certain schools.
Can anyone confirm whether the Boulder Valley School District is still using VHF radios for campus-type operations?

Chicgo Fire Dept. (2014 Updates)
Effective April 1st, 2014 a couple communications changes that some of the regular listeners might notice:
***Sector assignment designations will now be called Sector A-D to comply with NIMS standards. Sectors 1-4 will no longer be used.
***Progress Reports will be "at least" every 15 minutes until the incident is under control, then "at least" 30 minutes until all companies have picked up. The old standard was 10 minutes if you were watching a clock as you were listening.
This is a little older news, but we're using three different type of portable radios now with the same channel layout:
***XTS 5000's...used by Ambulance companies and firefighters.
***XTS 6000's..used by Fire Company Officers
***XTS 7000's...used by Chief Officers (Batt. Chiefs, EMS Field Chiefs, Exempt Chiefs)

What Was Scanning Like Back In The Day?
I'd love to hear some stories of what it was like back when you could listen to cell phones and your neighbor's cordless phone. When the cops were all analog and all you needed was a crystal scanner.
I got started in this hobby kinda late. Got into it last year at age 26. But, I'm having fun listening to stuff I find. I don't use Radioreference's database for the most part. I prefer to go "treasure hunting" and find it all for myself. Half the fun really.
I enjoy listening to airplane traffic. I heard an emergency in the air, last weekend about a total hydraulic failure some commercial plane had.
The police are fun to listen to. With my new digital scanner I can hear the Highway Patrol again and people sure are snitches! calling the cops to report any little thing, haha.
It's neat to listen to the local army installation- Fort Leonard Wood. Most of it is encrypted but they slip up here and there. :)
I've come across a few baby monitors and a KFC drive through. "I want a bucket of chicken!"
Scanning has alerted me to severe weather I may not have known about. I hear about it first before all my friends do.
Scanning has helped me avoid huge traffic jams on I-44. One time, I took a detour on Route 66 and laughed over at all the poor suckers waiting in line that stretched for miles, on a hot summer afternoon.
Anyway, I think this is a cool hobby.
I'd be happy to hear any of your stories about how it was "back in the day." 1950-1990.

Custom searches of RadioReference
When I recently became aware of the possibility of creating custom 'getdaily' and 'getnew' searches using a list of excluded forums (the '&exclude' parameter), I realized the potential usefulness of this. I was so intrigued that I wrote a javascript program to create and edit custom searches.
With this program it's possible to select forums in any combination. Although I created the program for my own use, others might find it useful, so I've uploaded it to the web. Here's the link:
Custom links for getdaily and getnew searches of the RadioReference forums
New users should probably read the instructions.

Routing coax down B-pillar
I have an '04 dodge ram quad cab and I just drilled and installed my Larsen NMO 2/70B now I'm stuck as far as routing the coax down my B-pillar on the drivers side. There's a side curtain airbag that goes from the front of the drivers window to the back of the rear window. I've tried googling for locations of the side airbag so I have an idea of where I need to route it but I can't find anything that shows me what I'm looking for other than a deployed bag from a distance:
http://ift.tt/O84pyI
I'm tempted to just go fishing with a coat hangar and hope for the best but I don't want the coax getting in the way of anything.
I COULD drop the headliner, and trim pieces, etc. but I'd rather not. That's more work than I really want to deal with. BUT if I get frustrated enough, I just might!
Thanks!

P7100IP scan model : Never ending Power Up Self Test cycle
I had some issues with a P7100 scan model.
When attempting to update the feature string I noticed Radio Maintenance could not read the tracking nor feature data from the radio.
I used the default tracking data file for the radio. After that I was able to update the feature string and upload the personality without any errors.
Now the radio goes into the Power Up Self Test display in a never ending cycle.
Any ideas?

RCMP encrypted early perhaps ?
Unless it's a slow night , looks like lights out for RCMP listening online, NS West is silent ,and didn't hear any calls to dispatch on Pictou or Richmond Co. , just EHS .Figure there would be at least 1 call to 355 on one of these feeds, if this be the case the Broadcastify pages need to be changed .
New LAPD Channel List
Hello,
Does anyone have the new LAPD Channel list? They are starting to use new rovers and have reconfigured there channel lineup. The RTO's are starting to just name the new channel's and not broadcasting the old channel. For example "Switch to Valley Bureau Tac 1 Channel 41 on new rover Valley Bureau tac 1 channel 42 on old rover" is no longer happening. Thank You in advance.

900 mhz XTL1500
Is this radio programmed with the Astro P25 CPS as the digital versions are?
Is extensive hex editing necessary to program in the amateur 902/927 band?
Time to move away from the MCS2000 series and the XTL1500 shows up at times at a reasonable price.
thanks....

Problem with favorites list
I'm having trouble getting my scanner to correct monitor a custom favorites list that I made and was hoping someone could shed some light on what I'm doing wrong.
I build special favorites lists sometimes based on the areas I want to monitor (Los Angeles is so densely populated, and has so many different agencies, systems, and frequencies that its actually more efficient than using GPS or Zip Code for me to make my own location based favorites).
For example, when in the San Fernando Valley, I have a favorites list of the corresponding LAPD, LAFD, and CHP channels for those areas called "Sherman Oaks"
I break it down further by assigning those agencies quick keys for quick on/off toggle.
In Hollywood/LA city I have the LAPD/LAFD and CHP channels for that area in another favorites list called "Hollywood"
I created a favorites list that combines both of these (sort of a greatest hits of the areas I'm in most of my day) called "shoakswood" but I noticed that even though that favorites lists contains the two sub lists "Sherman Oaks" and "Hollywood" that it actually only monitors/acknowledges the Sherman Oaks part of the favorite list.
I've tried everything, changing settings, renaming, assigning quick keys, making sure "download" and "monitor" are ON in sentinel etc, but all to no avail.
Any tips?
here's a link to the HPE file if you want to take a peek.

Question about firmware and digital frequencies
Hi guys, new to scanning and just got my first scanner a bcd396xt. Very hard to figure out. Bought it used and it has firmware 1.08.14. What will updating it do for the scanner? I'm not picking up hardly any digital transmissions from the Ohio State highway patrol posts in my area. Does the firmware have anything to do with this? I've gathered the MARCS system went thru a rebanding recently. These things related? Please help thanks
DSD or DSD+ Multiple Streams?
Is there a way to decode concurrent multiple streams using DSD or DSD+ in Windows? I am using multiple R820T dongles as receivers with Unitrunker and SDR#. I can now only listen to a single digital P25 transmission piping the SDR# output into DSD or DSD+. Nearly all of the systems in my area are now digital.
vx-7r locking up after charging
My 7r has developed a little problem recently. Been noticing that after charging the battery, the radio will lock up a few seconds after turning on. Nothing will work, will not power off.... I have to take the battery out for a few minutes, then when i put the battery back in, it will immediatly power back on itself. If I am quick enough, I can hit the power button to turn it off for a few minutes, then back on and its ok till i charge it again. On a side note, this also happens if i take the battery out and charge it alone without the radio.

NFM Vs. WFM Vs. FM Questions, Please
Hello,
Some questions re NFM vs FM, vs WFM, please:
a. I believe that Police, Fire, Railroads, and "Public Service" now are all on NFM.
True ?
b. But what about Maritime, such as for the C.G. ? Fishing and pleasure boats, etc. the same ?
c. What about Commercial Air ? (do they use any fm at all ?)
d. What about MIL Air ?
Thanks,
Bob

SDR as ghost box?
I was wondering if it was possible to use SDR as a "ghost box". I personally don't put much stock in them being a connection to the spirit world or whatnot, but I think it would make for a fun project or program. Basically what they do is scan about 15 FM station radio bands per second or something. Is this possible, been thought of or done before? I have seen devices that do this selling for 100 dollars or more on the internet (really!). Any thoughts welcome.
XPR programming
Hi There
Simple question but I can't seem to figure it out.
I need to know if there can be a scan on/off beep and a nuisance delete beep programmed into these radios. I know it is possible on the HT and CDM series radios but I can't seem to find that alert selection in the motobro programming.
Thanks

Importing Frequencies
I am using Win 500 and want to import the marine frequencies. Win 500 doesn't use easy grab and I was going to use copy and paste to import them into Excel but the only way I can do the copy is if I do one frequency at a time. It will not let me paste all of them at one time. I can use Arc500pro and paste them into it but have been using Win500. Any ideas as to how to get them into it? Thanks.

Most Active HF
Wondering if anyone could point me to some of the more active HF military (or govt.) HF freq. or nets. I have the GHFS programmed in already. I also put 11.220 in, as I seem to catch quite a few patches to that freq. from my location.
I have gone through all the wikis, and used monitoring times top 1000 HF lists PDF (very good by the way). I am not a hardcore HF utility guy, but I am really starting to enjoy this type of listening. I am about 200 miles from Offutt, if that matters. I only have portables for this type of listening, I use a Kenwood TH-F6A with a telescoping antenna, and a DX398. Not the most ideal I know, but its what I have.
Just hoping to add a few more freq. to my radios. Thanks for any advice/help, Mike

Communicating with Pro-197
I recently picked up a Pro-197 scanner and was interested in developing a Java application to manage it (mainly because there doesn't appear to be any free software options), however after some searching, I wasn't able to find any API information that would explain what I'm sending/receiving via the COM port.

Buncombe County, Nc - Feed Survey Question?

BCD536HP reception worse than my 436HP
One thing I've noticed about my 536HP is that my 436 receives noticeably better than it which is hugely disappointing.
I have both my 536 and 436 programmed with identical favorites lists/settings but I notice when monitoring most of my various departments the 436 picks up must faster/more often, and generally just better than my 536.
I've confirmed this behavior with both stock antennas, upgraded small antennas, and also my large exterior wideband discone.
The 436 even receives much better when using the stock antenna vs the 536 with my external discone.
Any help ideas or tips is greatly appreciated. At this point I'm just about ready to return my 536 and call it quits which would be a sad end of my forrays into the new uniden line.

new headphone issue after recall
Thanks for Upman and uniden for doing their best to address the issues of the 536 for us early adopters in the best way possible.
I receive my replacement 536 back this week but am still having some issues with the headphone jack. Aside from incredible noise (I got past that using a ground loop isolator) I've now noticed that there is a "pop" at the end of all transmissions received.
This doesn't happen when using the rear audio out, only the headphone jack. You can hear the noise I'm speaking of by monitoring my feed, you'll hear a small but sharp "pop" at the end of all transmissions (also at
the start of many).

XTS question
I have a couple XTS3000s UHF 403-470mhz with the Motorola whip antenna. My question is in that band split would it damage the radio if I used a 7" 800mhz antenna? I really like the long Motorola antennas that have the "ball" at the end an I can only find those versions in 800mhz.

BCD436HP Data / Power port cover flaps open
As silly/tedious as this may sound, I've noticed that the little rubber flap on the right side of my scanner (it covers the usb, port etc.) constantly flaps open. No matter how tightly I seal it/secure it, it'll often pop right open after only a minute or two.
Anyone else noticed this?
Any tips/suggestions? It's incredible annoying and doesn't seem to be working as designed.

Where are the higher telescopic masts?
I am looking to go taller with my portable mast. Currently I own a great mast from here, and being 21 feet (6.4 meters) high, I am looking to grab an additional 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6.1 meters). I am not having much luck finding anyone that sells taller telescopic aluminum masts, and it seems there is nothing between this size and going all out with a larger tower, of which I have no room for. Ideally I would like to have at least 30 feet (9.1 meters). Does anyone know of a retailer or distributor that supplies such a mast? The requirements are the aforementioned height, lightweight, telescopic, and not necessarily portable, but somewhat manageable to stow away when not in use.
HP-1 HP1 Extreme
Here is my issue.. In discovery conventional mode CTCSS/DCS/NAC does not decode... On vhf p25 channels in discovery mode I hear the digital buzz but no decode... If I turn off the hp1e and then back on a few times it will start decoding the digital buzz channels with a pl of CTCSS 67...
and analog will start decoding CTCSS and DCS tones but then it stops...
Also when in Listen mode holding on the same channel 156.21 MHz pl 114.8 for example will not pick up.
However the bct15x with same pl on same channel never misses a beat...
both have a RH77CA diamond antenna on them with same 90 degree bnc adapter plus the hp1e has a bcd396xt sma to bnc adapter...
Is this an issue anyone else seems to have?
even holding on any frequency with the correct verified pl programmed it does not receive it unless I power cycle the scanner 3 to 4 times then it receives again...
Also on some channels in the HP1E when I program a subtone and go back to check on it later by going to menu>advanced menu> advanced options>edit favorites list> select favorites list> select system> edit department> select department> edit channel> select channel> set audio type> analog> ctcss> no tones are listed at all...
Power down scanner and turn it on and off 3 or 4 times then the CTCSS/DCS tones appear...
anyone else verify this on their hp1e if it goes quiet and stops receiving?

Traveling from New Brunswick Canada to NYC
Hey folks,
We are traveling from New Brunswick to New York City. We've done the trip before, but this time I'd like to limit the frequencies I'm scanning on the way down and back. I'm wanting to scan the frequencies that will tell us if there is anything that will effect our travels along the way.
We are planning on taking the 95 series highways to the Worcester area, then 84 to 91 and back onto the 95 series into New Jersey where our hotel is.
I'm thinking State Police and DOT, but are there any other suggestions for those who may travel the route? I have some feedback on Maine. I'm wondering if anyone here has some thoughts on monitoring through to NYC. We are actually staying across the river in NJ.

BCDx96XT 996XT Custom Search question
Somehow, and I have no idea how, I must have hit the wrong combination of buttons because now whenever I turn on my 996XT, along with whatever I have scanning, it also searches thru the Custom 10 search. Even if I have all quick keys off, it will search thru Custom 10.
Question....how do I turn that off? I've looked thru the easier to read manual, but that wasn't much help. It's probably there and i just didn't see it due to lack of sufficient amounts of coffee. LOL.
If anyone can provide some help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Many thanks in advance.

If anyone is in the Fresno County area and wouldn't mind checking to see if it's still active, it would be appreciated. If it's not, I'd like to remove it from the DB.

diamond 789 vs rh770 telescopics
I'm after a new antenna for my yaesu ft-60 and am wondering which of these would be best for scanning all the bands and U/VHF tx when out campng/hiking etc
I'm thinking 789 would be a bit lighter and with the hinge less prone to stress on the small connector
are there better telescopic options than these two? I also have a nagoya 771 which was supposed to be great wide receive but not impressed with it at all
also there are a few clones of the diamond rh770 are they identical under a different name or are they inferior?
thanks for any insight

IC-706 TX Fix - 2SC4081 transistor equivalent?
Fixing low HF output on a 706 (DAP222TL and 2SC4081 T107 on the filter board were bad).
I've been able to source DAP222TL but it seems all the usual places are out of 2SC4081 T107 (out of production) and the only place that does have it will only take orders of 500+
Is there any equivalent to this part?
Mouser has a 2SC4081 T106 which appears to have the same specs, but I'd rather not chance it. Does anyone here know if T106 works in the T107's place?

Study guides - Buy now or wait?
Just getting started, playing with a UV5R & learning a bit here and there.
I come from a fairly strong electronics background (pro TV/radio repair before out of high school, avionics in the service) so I'm confident on the basics of the tech side at least. But in looking at some of the practice tests, a solid electronics background isn't really the half of it. - I clearly need a study guide if for no other reason than to get some direction.
But ... the ultimate goal is passing the test which I gather is changing in June..?
I've been left dangling by changing tests and study tracks in the past (Novell, CNE training) and don't want to get "burned" by buying a guide to help with the test and having to buy another guide thats suited for the new test track..
Anyone have any ideas? - Should I just wait another year before bothering with a study guide?
Many thanks,
Norm

800Frequency Transmissions only on Search Mode
I receive transmissions on 800 Frequency when in "Search" Mode but when I switch to the bank that has many of the same 800 Frequencies programmed into my R/S Pro 96..... I get nothing period.
Also when I lock in 155.56500 for OnslowCounty Sheriff dispatch (418) for over an hour....to listen to any NTBPD activiity... many times I hear absolutely nothing.
I live on the beach in NTB. Late at night it sometimes comes in when Scanner is in Bdrm on street side.
Is something wrong with my scanner or is it my location? Very frustrating. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Unknown source, possibly Pirate, 17975 kHz, AM, March 29, 2014
17975 kHz, AM, 1515 UTC, March 29, 2014, transmission of presidential speeches. Up to S8 here locally, but most often about S5. Still on at this time (1423 UTC).
Unknown sourced transmission, might be a pirate or might not. It is not a listed on any schedules, so probably not a regular BC station. If it is a pirate it is an unusual one.
Started prior to 1515 UTC, that was when I first noticed it. Looks like a 20 or 21 minute loop of JFK’s inaugural speech and a couple of FDR’s Fireside chats. Loop just repeats over and over, has gone through 3+ cycles so far with no variations or IDs.
This same transmission was reported in Aug, 2013 on 9225 kHz, and about 12 days ago (March 17, 2014) on 17795 kHz.

Aircraft lockout ?
Hi all,
I am using my 536HP and starting to learn the functions. However, I have locked out aircraft band and still pick up Boston flight traffic. Any idea what other band this may fall under?

P25 Skip Question
Back when Houston PD was very active, I used to hear them from time to time in Waco, Texas using analog UHF. Although the signal would fade a bit, it was still possible to follow the action.
Today, I was reading a post that prompted me to ask myself, "how does skip affect P25 transmissions, particularly on VHF trunking or VHF conventional?
I would appreciate some feedback on this.

Searching all frequencies
Pro-197 Win 500 software. I have scanner set with the talkgroups and frequencies that I want and need and the scanlists are 1-7 which I turn off several at a time so I can just listen to certain groups. My question is this...I don't want to do a ID scan but want to do a open scan not using the talkgroups how would I do this? I want to do an open scan of all the frequencies, will I need another program? I want to see what talkgroups are being used and if there are any new ones being used. I hope this makes sense?

RTL SDR INSTALLATION PROBLEM
hello please help me
.**Your Dongle is either not connected or not working properly.**
I finish the installation, letter by letter as described in the tutorial. Now it is time to start your radio! . Before I turn it on I see the following options in Front End
(1) FUNcube Dongle (2) SoftRock / Si570 (3) RTL-SDR / RTL 2832U
or (4) Other.
No matter which option I select( RTLSDR), your software hangs, then it hands me
the following error message:

Is The PSR 800 a Good Radio?
Good Morning folks!
Since I own a PSR 800 (Which is now Currently being fixed) and never scanned Phase ll properly is it worth upgrading to something new like the 436HP?
I've read a lot of mixed reviews in the forums and really haven't come to solid conclusion....
So what do you guys think?

M1225 Tone muting
I have a Motorola M1225 Model: M43DGC90J2AA. When programming in tones for RX and TX the Tx tone works to open the repeater but the RX will receive anything no matter what tone if any. How do I get it mute anything but say 100hz PL tone?

Dipole, Off-Center, Balun, No Balun, 50 or 75 Ohm Coax?
Just started playing with the home-brew antennas for my scanner family. I have 2 I am using now, plus 4 purchased antennas...
I've been reading, and reading, and looking at pictures, studying designs...
... and there's a few things that seem unclear to me:
1) for dipoles, real dipoles, center-fed, do you use 50 ohm or 75 ohm coax?
2) For center-fed dipoles do you use a balun?
3) For center-fed dipoles, do you used a balun ONLY if you used 75 ohm coax?
Again, this is for scanner use.
Also, just for listening, is the length of a center-fed dipole critical?
For instance, if a 36" dipole (2x 18") works well for 154 MHz and 440-470MHz, if the measurements were increased to 10' (2x 5'), will it bring in the signals better because there is more metal in the air?
prcguy mentioned in another thread that 1/2 wave is bad, but that was "end-fed". I believe "odd multiples" of a 1/4 wave were good, so would 2x 54" legs be better since they are 3x 18"?
I've got results from several antennas already, but I don't quite understand the results, or at least I don't want to draw conclusions from assumptions. I'll leave this for a later post till these basic questions are answered.
Thanks in advance :)

XTS3000 un-mute problems
Hello, I am currently experiencing an issue that has always given me trouble but now I really want to fix it. Basically I have a group of XTS3000's that will not un-mute until each radio is transmitted. It's the oddest thing and I really am baffled by this.
Basically if I attempt to contact one radio with another the receiving radio will show the busy channel indicator, however it will not put out audio unless I key up on the receiving radio for a second and then go back to receiving. The help file does not cover this type of situation and so I am turning to the professionals that do lurk for help. Any insight would be appreciated.

DIN Connectors...Problem?
I read a lot about people griping about older 5 pin DIN connectors. I've never seen one pull out as they usually fit pretty tightly despite claims to the contrary. The seem to really drive non-techincal users batty with the soldering and shell complexity over a regular locking connector. What's the big deal with these that people hate them so much?
New sdr user
Have had my Afedri sdr for about five days. Some minor issues, early on, but all is running well using HDsdr. Is there somewhere I can find a users guide to Hdsdr? I mean simple things like how to tune lsb/usb so I can understand it? Should you use AGC or AFC or both, for weak stations? Or do I simply need to find a basic guide to tuning regular shortwave receivers? I am mostly a scanner guy and shortwave confuses me.

Mobile use in Ford Hybird
Looking at taking my test in 2 weeks. I have a question about mobile unit for 10 or 2 meters use. I read another place that it was best to connect to the battery rather than thru cig. lighter socket.
I have 2013 Ford C-Max hybird. My battery is in back along with my main hybird battery, only dummy post in engine compartment. Does anyone have experience with hybird and ham radio mobile?
Will I get interference more from the small gas engine if running, then when in ev electric vehicle mode?
Looking for someone with hybird that can help. Also will be looking for a rig in few weeks also, what units would work good thru 12v cig. plug.

PG County Undocumented Talkgroups
So I received my BCD536HP this week and started to do an ID Search on PG County's P25 system. As I have been listening there have been a few talkgroup IDs that are not in the RR database. I figured I would post them here and see if anyone else has heard them as well. I do not want to submit frequencies to the database admins when I have little to no knowledge about them myself.

ARMER Radio Template Examples???
Was wondering if anyone knows the Zone/Talkgroup layout (i.e. radio channel template) used for ARMER radios for any of the following agencies?
- Hennepin County Fire
- Minneapolis Fire
- Ramsey County Fire
- St Paul Fire
A friend of mine wants me to formulate a WIN500 scanner file so his PSR500 replicates how an actual radio is laid out (or close to it).
Thanks in advance - PM's are welcome.

PFD 800 Simulcast?
Lately while out and about I have heard PFD Dispatches Simulcast on one of the 800 frequencies I have listed as Desert Hills 867.20000 or 868.43750 and transmitting a NAC. Since I was driving I didnt have the opportunity to look down at the scanner to catch exact frequency and NAC. Has anyone else heard this?
Thanks!

SDR Spectrum Analyzers
I know that there's probably not a single one of these that compare to a real, lab-grade SA. However most of us can't really justify spending several thousand dollars on a piece of test equipment that we might use a handful of times a year.
I'm looking at the Nuts About Nets RF Viewer ($79 + shipping) and the Signal Hound USB-SA44B ($919 + shipping)
RF Viewer looks like it's little more than a toy. I think it's funny that it's marketed as a wireless network testing took, yet it only covers 24 MHz to 1766 MHz so it can't even analyze most Wi-Fi signals. The Signal Hound unit looks like a more serious tool. It covers 1 Hz to 4.4 GHz and has a companion tracking generator available.
Has anybody got any experience with these? What other options are available?

31.02 Fayetteville area heard in Ireland
Hi folks,
I wonder can anyone help. Im hearing what sounds like Police traffic on 31.02 from the Fayetteville area via skip here in Ireland.
One unit identifies as "Cumberland 030" - asking for vehicle checks and quoting North Carolina registrations. Also mentions of "Fort Bragg and Macpherson" (turns out to be a road in Fayetteville)
This kind of traffic was also noted on 10/24/13 when many roads in the Fayetteville area were heard being referenced.
PL is 123. Sometimes at good levels.
I dont see anything listed for NC on that freq that could be it. Any idea what exactly it is?

How many scanners do you own?
I currently only own four scanners. I will soon have five . Right now I have
GRE PSR 500, at the time of this posting it should be on the way back from Le Roy New york, repaired! This is my primary radio, and I've missed it!
Pro106 this is a secondary scanner with talkgroups I don't normally monitor . And lots of frequencies related to military aviation, also several federal government and military systems .
Pro164 this radio is exclusively used to stream my Seattle police and fire scanner feed.
Pro163 This has several LTR business systems with a lot of unknown businesses to monitor, I try figuring out who's who. This radio also has Centurylink field. Home of the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL and Seattle Sounders of major league soccer . Centurylink also hosts other events, like motocross etc. I also have lots of aviation frequencies in the radio related to the military .
I plan to get a BCD 436HP .

Beeping Noise
Anyone know what the beeping noise is that comes up every few seconds when there is dead air?
Also I noticed some of APD's channels sound garbled. What is causing that?

ADS-B decoding with PP and Virtual Radar
I've just gotten everything set up to decode ADS-B using RTL1090 and either Plane Plotter or Virtual Radar. I've been told that not all planes are required to use this mode til 2020. With the ones that I do see (I"m on the 15th floor of a co-op right under the LGA flight path), there is rarely any LON/LAT info so nothing on the map of PP or VR. Am I missing something or is this just the way it is for now. I'm not sure what the point of purchasing PP is unless this info is there.

Probably manufactured in 11/2010
Roger Beep (Menu 06 ROGER)
Beginning of Transmission (BOT)
Delay time 380 mS
Tone 819 Hz 130 mS
End of Transmission (EOT)
No delay
No space between tones
1st tone 530 Hz 130 mS
2nd tone 742 Hz 130 mS
Squelch Tail Elimination (STE)
The radio sends a 55 Hz tone for ~220 mS when the PTT key is released.
This happens even with no transmit CTCSS tone selected (CSQ) and cannot be disabled.
When DCS (CDCSS) encode is enabled, the radio sends the standard CDCSS turnoff code (134.4 Hz tone) for ~220 mS when the PTT key is released.
The microphone remains hot while the STE 55 Hz tone or DCS 134.4 Hz turnoff code are being sent.
In decode mode if a signal with CTCSS or DCS is received and the tone is dropped, the squelch remains open for ~200 mS.
The radio will immediately close the squelch upon receiving the STE 55 Hz tone, even with no receive CTCSS tone selected (CSQ).
CTCSS/DCS Decoding
When in CTCSS or DCS decode mode the occasionally the audio will mute intermittently for no apparent reason.
The decoder or STE may be falsing on received voice audio.
Scanning
Scanning stops on any signal or noise even when in CTCSS/DCS decode mode.
Memory Loss Problem
Read about the Wouxun defective memory problem at Good-Bye-Wouxun
This particular unit developed the memory loss problem after about three years.
On this particular unit the problem only happens occasionally when switching from "Frequency Mode" to "Channel Mode".
When the memory loss problem happens to this unit, the top display goes to memory channel 0, which does not exist.
The KG-UV2D only has memories numbered 1-128.
If the unit is in CHFREQ mode the display will show frequency "???.????" and memory channnel "00".
If the unit is in CH mode the display will show "CH-000".
Changing channels fixes the problem temporarily with no loss of memory or settings.
Powering cycling the unit when it has the problem causes a full reset and loses all memories and settings.
I don't know how many of these apply to other firmware versions or other models.

Fed freq hit on pro 106 on 95 bridge
Hi guys, I've been signal stalking a LONG time, different scanners. While in Portsmouth NH this morning, got a few gmrs hits, ( 1 may be the social security building, need more tune in time ) but on my way onto the I-95 northbound RAMP, I got a hit.. i quickly pushed STORE. At the height of the 95 bridge, my signal stalker went off again with encryption .. So I hit STORE again.. I just got home, and heres what I caught. I have never heard these before..All I ever caught in Portsmouth was 408.200/p25 ...
418.675-nac-156 ,
418.750-nac-156
both encrypted, new to Portsmouth? Or did a signal travel 100 miles?

Low freq scanning
What type of scanner or equipment if any, would one need to monitor between 2.85240000 and 17.96540000 MHz I reckon it is, or is it KHz when it's that low.

Odd feedback from Portland Police Talkgroups
Hello All,
I have a Uniden BC246T and have a good handful of the Portland Public Safety Frequencies programmed in and also have the main dispatch talkgroups (Central, N, E Precincts plus two Tactical groups). I've noticed that recently some broadcasts are coming across as static. Its not happening on a specific frequency or even a specific talkgroup.
Is this common? I would say 99% of the time all comms come through clear but occasionally someone is broadcasting and it could be on any of the talkgroups picked up on any of the frequencies and it just comes through as solid static.

PSR 500 back in my hands soon and possible new purchase.
I sent my GRE PSR 500 off for repair February 10th 2014 and it will be shipped back to me tomorrow, March 28th. I dropped it sometime in late January, early February. And, despite what appeared to be just cosmetic damage, there was also internal damage. The radio stopped working properly February 5th. It appeared to be scanning just fine. But there was no audio. G&G communications, LeRoy New York , was able to fix it for under $100.00 . The diagnosis was a cracked area of the pc board.
So my current radio line up is as follows
GRE PSR 500
Radio shack Pro106
Radio shack Pro 164 I use to stream my feed.
Radio shack Pro 163
I am considering purchasing the BCD 436HP, soon, likely from scannermaster.com There are a few systems in our area that would make the 436 very handy. I am hoping someone out there has the 436 hp. Or might be considering a purchase soon?!

Emergency Traffic Stories
First off, I do not want a debate on what-if scenarios and legality of off-band transmissions during emergencies. This is strictly a recap of actual events and what happened afterwards (if it's known).
Basically I am curious if anyone out there has any stories of people whether HAMS or Civilians using radio frequencies, whether authorized to use them or not, to summon help in an emergency. No public safety personnel or "work place" stories because there would be thousands of those and people are generally expected to call for help on their radio at work if they have one.
The only instance that I am personally aware of comes from a radio transcript of FDNY Manhattan on 9/11, quoted below. This particular story is a civilian on a public safety frequency.
As for the outcome of what happened to this person, there's hardly any chance of finding out as this was transmitted before the second tower collapsed, likely on top of them. But they could have also been freed as the next tower didn't collapse for nearly half an hour after this call was made.
The full transcript can be found here: Transcripts (There is no further from this unidentified person).
To reiterate, this topic is not for debating the legality of the issue, just recapping the events as they happened. If you're thinking of trying to find some excuse to transmit on other bands just remember that an emergency is not a preplanned event. Besides, if you're planning what to do when you get trapped in a crushed fire truck under a collapsed 100-story building, you really need help there, Dwight Schrute.

BCD436HP Bad Reception, send in or firmware?
While I have my 436 sitting next to my 396 both with stock antennas, both radios will stop on a distant VHF station and the 396 will be readable but the 436 is all static. I have read many posts saying the 436 is the most sensitive receiver that people have owned. I am not seeing that, in fact it is quite the opposite. Is it possible this may get fixed in a firmware update or should I send it in for repair? If few are having the issue, I am thinking it is not a firmware thing.

Garbled Audio, Help!
Ok, I've got two scanners set up right next to eachother. Both are Relm HS200 scanners (used to use them at the NASCAR races) anyway....
One of the scanners is conneted to my computer, and broadcasting though the scannercast app. The other scanner is just playing audio into the room.
Here's the feed:
Yarmouth Police / Fire, Cumberland and Freeport Fire
I'm scanning the same 7 frequencies on both.
Whenever the police frequency talks (154.965 - Yarmouth Police) I can hear the audio from the scanner playing into the room. It sounds fine. It is not encrypted, scrambled, trunked, or otherwise modified.
The other scanner plays it's audio into my computer, and about 20 seconds later when the audio makes it though to the 5-0 Radio App, or the Broadcastify Feed, the audio is completely garbled. Almost as if it had been encrypted with inversion or something.
I don't understand what's causing this.
I've switched the scanners, and still the same. Listening to audio (from the police frequency only, all other frequencies broadcast fine) locally, it sounds fine, but through the scanner feed, 90% of the time it's garbled, and only about 10% of the time it can be heard clear like it should be.
Any idea what's going on here?

Getting back in the saddle in NJ
I am a former radio enthusiast back in my teens. Now I am in my mid 30's and have blown the dust off of some of my stuff and am getting back into things. I was primarily into shortwave back in the the 90's, and have put my 2 radio's back into service. I must say I am shocked as to how the variety of stations has dropped off.
I slightly dabbled in scanner listening also in the early 90's with a cheaper Realistic desktop. Always enjoyed it but never really embraced it. My R-5000 has the VHF module installed and I started playing with it and quickly decided to do an upgrade since it is very limited. Well the upgrade has now brought me here. I went with a Uniden BCT15X, and obviously this is not my Radio Shack scanner from the early 90's. I am thinking that this will fill the void that shortwave is leaving me with since the dial is no longer as full. I believe this will also be my last baby step before I go for my amateur licence.
I look forward to picking your brains for knowledge and hopefully being able to share some of my own...

Is this system still in use by anyone? When I was at KDH this week, I heard nothing but what seemed to be failsoft beeps on three of the freqs.

I know that MURS radios cannot exceed 2 watts. They cost about $175+. I have found a Two-Way radio that is User-Programmable that I can program to that frequency/frequencies. But, its 5 watts, when I program it will it go down to 2 watts or can I use it?
Just trying to save money! (These are about $50-$75)

BCD536HP Programming a 536 for a P25 system question
Hello,
After reading the easy manual, I see that P25 doesn't have I-Call. Is this true? Our county recently switched from a conventional 800mhz trunking system to a P25 phase 1 800mhz trunking system. I-Call was used pretty much non-stop. How are they doing it now?
Also, the easy manual says to program only control channels (pri and alt). I've read here that any freq can be used as a control for P25 systems. Our system has 20 freq's. Should I program just the controls or all?
Thanx....

Electric Line Services inc. in Cleveland county Oklahoma
Trying to find the freqs for ELS in OKC OK Cleveland county area. I have found a freq through FCC search, I was just wondering if it's a simplex or duplex frequency, and does it have a tone? Any help would be appreciated
463.725 Monroe County, Pa
Well looks like Fox Gap Communications from Bethlehem has single repeater set up at
Antennas:
.8 km E of Rt 191 at Fox Gap
Stroundsburg, PA MONROE County
WQSC780 - 463.7250 Bethlehem, Pa
PL77.0 was being used for testing this evening, and earlier today. During snow storms sounded like a township was operating the system and another private company.
Just weird to see a conventional repeater being used for "Lease" purposes any more. Most in this area are LTR systems.
Kinda miss the old days of searching.. Just thought share the find.

Scanner codes
Dear Sirs or Madames,
I just purchased a Uniden scanner. I checked Hall County, GA but was unable to get info because I don't have a pc. Can I have the list mailed or emailed to me? If there is a cost, how much will it be? Please advise. Thank you.
