I just purchased a uniden 496 (I think) not sure but it is the trunk tracker 3. I was told that no one around me was digital so this is all I needed. While programming it I found out that Appleton and green Bay are both digital. I am thinking of returning it and getting a digital scanner but can't figure out if the 996 (I think that is what it is) will work for me or if I need to get the latest and greatest out there.
I was hoping someone who actually understands this stuff better than me could look and tell me whether the 996 will work for digital areas around me or not. I can generally get brown, outagamie, fon du lac, sheboygan, manitowoc counties. I also would like to get the state trunking system that is in use but after reading about 2 different types of digital trunking systems and that some are encrypted but not others. I figured it would be easier to ask here than buying and returning.
So basically I am looking for a recommendation on what will work for everything in the counties I mentioned. If all of the digital radios in those areas are encrypted then I'll stay with what I have but if it makes sense to purchase the 996 or something else I would do that.
