Henderson County ?

Has Henderson transitioned to the VIPER P25 or have they gone back to full time VHF?

CB Firestick Experiment

I did a little experiment this evening. Was quick to put together. I used a white 11m firestick antenna and added 5 feet 5 inches of wire to the thread of the firestick. At the opposite end of the wire is into 6 feet of 50 ohm Rg-58 double shield coax. I wanted to try to get better reception indoors For Shortwave.

It seemed to receive fine.

I have no test equipment. Can someone with the same parts as I mentioned piece one together like mine and find out where it is resonant at?

Edit: Forgot to mention I have it mounted to a 7 foot 3/4th inch by 1-1/8th inch wood thing.

I can hear the pile up on 20 meter amateur at 14255 khz upper side band. Some kind of contest.

Seems to do ok mounted in the vertical position.

SC DNR Question

Does anyone have a repeater list for the different DNR regions? Or better yet, can point me in the right direction to get Region 4 in the radios without dumping in every 800 repeater in all of the counties covered?

Older Motorola HT ??

OK, I have an older Motorola HT1250 LS+, and was wondering if there is an easy way to redprog it for the new narrowband freqs in use on an LTR system, or does it need a major redo?

MotoTrobo Emission Designation

Doing some research and of course most new FCC Licenses have

MOTOTRBO: 7K60FXE (voice), 7K60FXD (data).

7K60FXE for voice operation and not the data side, my question to the groups is.

When using Emissions 7K60FXE is that strictly voice in analog mode or is that also same designation being used for Digital side of Mototrbo as well?

Spokane PD/SO

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this question but here goes. I have a BCD436HP and have only done programming by entering zip code. I just updated the data base. It seems any of the agencies using digital, Spokane PD, SO and WSP, as an example the transmissions generally sound like they are underwater and very "choppy"; miss lots of what is said. What am I missing? Hoping someone else in Spokane has the same scanner and can share their experience and give advise?

Thanks for any info

Chris.

Feed Volume Feedback needed

I need your help as I ran into members complaining they cannot hear it. The volume is at 7. If i make it and higher the feed will obviously be too loud even at the lowest setting. I can hear it very well 10/10.

Antenna set screw thread size

I have a Wilson 5000 that came with only one set screw, supposed to be two. It's the little allen head screw that sets the whip into its base. It looks like a 10-32 size thread but that does not fit correctly. If you hasppen to know the size I can stop by my local hardware and get one tomorrow.

Thanks.

Given the cost of these is not huge, what is the best antenna available?

UniTrunker with DSD+ (few issues)

I'm having a few issues (to say the least) with my dual RTL-SDR dongles, Unitrunker and DSD+ setup playing nice...

I've browsed the forums for hours about how to set all this up correctly but I'm missing something and I don't know what...

First, I know that DSD+ decodes the "voice" receiver, not the "signal" but when I set it up as that I get "no sync" in DSD+ so that is issue #1.

Issue #2 is when I set it up the other way around, I get good Sync and it looks like it's decoding something but can't hear any audio from the voice receiver. I tune it to 162.395MHz and I hear the NOAA just fine so set it back to 0 and hear static and then squelch it...

At any rate, any insight is much appreciated. I just found out about SDR not too long ago and basically don't know what I'm doing... I tried SDR Sharp with older version of Unitrunker and still couldn't get it to decode anything although I hear the data on correct frequency (with PPM correction.)

Ault 2x fatal, as paged

AULT, Colo. (CBS4) - Two people died Monday evening in Weld County when a pickup truck collided with a semi-truck hauling logs.

Two others were injured and transported to nearby hospitals.

The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. at Highway 14 and Weld County Road 31 when the white pickup truck tried to cross the intersection but didn’t make it.

A man injured in the crash told bystanders, who rushed to help, that his pregnant wife and daughter were hurt. Authorities said neither survived. A third man was airlifted to Northern Colorado Medical Center. His condition wasn’t released late Monday night. The pregnant woman was apparently driving.

The victims’ names haven’t been released.

P25 Uniden Vs RS

I never got nothing but Uniden Till last week, And I got a Pro-197, HOLY CRAP.. The P25 sounds 200 times better.. The decoding I get from RS scanners blows any Uniden I ever owned.. Is there any setting that can make the 396xt sound anywhere as good as Pro-197-106.. This is so clear it is insane.. With Uniden it would sound at times wild and digital.. With RS scanner it is 100% clear... WTF is RS doing that Uniden is not?

Monitoring In Southwest Nebraska

I periodically get over to southwest Nebraska from Denver and carry a GRE PSR-500 with me to monitor as I have time. I've got the usual public safety freqs programmed in for NSP conventional, the new P-25 VHF system I guess they've gone to and hear very little when out there. I realize there's little activity in the late evenings but are there some nets I should concentrate on when traveling out there? I only have the rubber duck on the radio since I'm in a company car but would like to see what i can hear... Thanks for any assistance.

I usually travel from Colorado along Hwy 34 to Mc Cook and return to Colorado when I'm out there.

I don't even need an extra set of batts. when going out for the day.

I'm looking in to getting a mobile magmount type antenna for the Federal 160-175mhz band and was wondering what are the best suggestions? I'm not in to the drill mount antennas. Also, more DB gain would be nice such as 2db or 3db at the most maybe something higher?

Variable Capacitor Pfd

Hello: I'm currently accumulating parts for a magnetic loop receiving antenna. I'm going to use 3/4" copper tbg. My feed ring will be 1/5th the size of the 30"diameter main loop. Anyway, I picked up an old metal and ceramic 18 bladed variable capacitor--18 blades on each side (total 36); it's about 3" in length and has a ball-bearing shaft. When the capacitor is fully disengaged ea. blade is spaced 1/8th" inch from the next blade, and I'm wondering how many Pfd it "might" be. I'm not fussy at this point; but I'd like about 385Pfd or better. What's the easiest way to determine its Pfd? I'd like to link a close-up photo of the old fellow, as well as that of an interesting older radio chasis that I bought (for anyone's perusal and identification). Is it possible to post or link a photo on this forum? It would be so much better than a description. I s'pose not. My apologies, I'm quite new to all of this. Thank you!

Audio file size reduction

I'm working on a project for someone that involves MP3 audio files (320kbps audio quality) and the only way I have to transfer then is through email. Each file is about 100-200 MB in size and I am wondering if there is a way to compress or somehow make the audio files smaller. I have tried 7-Zip and it does not compress much if any (the only compression I think comes from the text in the folder). Most of the reading I've done always involves reducing the MP3 quality, something which I would rather not do.

Is there a way I can either compress or package these files up and send them without reducing the audio quality?

Motorola Battery Date Code Question

Ok!

I know pretty much how to tell what year and week Motorola batteries are made. Now, today, I was looking at a spare

I received with a radio I bought and the 3 digit date code was 032. My question is this: is the 0 meant as 2010 or 2000?

When did Motorola switch to a 4 digit code?

Astro Saber only works out of housing

I just bought an Astro Saber II that was reported to have no internal audio. Powered it on, verified that it passed POST, and yeah, no audio. Being one to always check first if everything is plugged in, I pulled the chassis and lo and behold, the speaker/mic flex was loose. Plugged it in snug, tested it with a Jedi battery held to the pins on the back of the chassis (it really IS just an XTS3000 in a different case!), everyone is happy. I also replaced the display board with one from another Astro Saber, as the one it came with was losing pixels.

Put the chassis back in its housing, snug the nuts, pop a Saber battery on, and...nothing. Try a different battery (different brand): nothing. Pull the chassis again, test it with Jedi battery: works perfectly. Plugged the old display board back in, tested with Jedi battery: works perfectly.

Now I'm stumped. When I opened the radio the first time, I didn't do anything to the housing. Didn't spray any cleaner in it, poke at it, nothing. Just set it down on my workbench. Is it possible that seeing voltage on the XTS battery pins caused the controller to think it's in an XTS housing and ignore the Saber housing flex circuit? I don't see why that would be, but I find it equally unlikely that the Saber housing flex gave up the ghost the moment I de-mated it from the chassis, with no visible damage, corrosion, or any sign of dust PR moisture intrusion.

What gives?

Mastr III problems

I have a Mastr III and the RX Synthesizer has a fault light flashing. Went through the service manual and found I needed to adjust the VCO to get 2-7VDC on pin A23. However when I do so there is no change in the voltage no matter how much I change the pot for the VCO. I did try this card in another chassis and the voltage will adjust to the proper level however once I have done this and put it back in the other one the voltage still has not changed. It looks like something further up the chain is the problem. Has anyone had a similar issue or problem.

XTS 3000 / Astro Saber

Hello All,

I have been utilizing Astro Sabers for a long time now. I have the CPS R5.03 for the Astros and XTS 3000. When It comes to the XTS 3000 I dont know very much. My question is if I try to program the XTS with the R5.03 CPS and it was previsouly programed by a higher version of CPS will it work? I am looking into moving on to the XTS 3000.

FM radio fade at traffic lights

I think everyone has got to have experienced this. I'm sitting at a red light, and the FM radio station I'm listening to sometimes fades and becomes static-y. I inch up a bit, and it comes back full. Then I inch up again, and it starts to fade.

Yet driving down the highway, it sounds solid.

Why does this happen? Is the antenna somehow out of phase when you're in a certain fixed position? Or am I feeling the full effect of reflected signals when I'm stopped?

Power supply needed for programming a mobile radio!

Seems like a really dumb question, but I need to ask it anyways... I'm looking to get my first dual-band mobile unit later this year and install it in my truck. With my Baofeng, to program local frequencies I just hooked up the radio to my computer, ran CHIRP, and was done. When I get my mobile unit, do I have to pick up a power supply to program it from my computer that *one time*, and then install it? I don't have a laptop to use to program the new radio after it's installed...

General Question Regarding GMRS

I was wondering if all these radios, that advertise that they have (for example)

WS-1080/PSR-800 scan list

Please help. I have manually programed my new 1080, the programmed it using EZ scan, but with same problem

I have enabled scanlists 1, 2, and 3. The check boxes are checked, both in the scanner and on the software. List 1 is LAPD, list 2 is LASO, and list 3 is LA Cities.

Checked software and scanner, and all the channels (conventional) are listed in the appropriate lists.

But whenever I press Scan, only Scan list 1 loads up, and none of the other lists or channels on them are scanned. If I just check 2 or 3 or 2 and 3, If I only check 1, 1 loads fine, if I check 1, 2, and 3, only 1 loads.

Thought in might be a "default thing" but when set default to list 2 or 3, same thing, only list 1 loads.

Am I missing something basic here.

Please help.

I added a variety of Boulder police channels to my new Yaesu FT-1900R, but a notice a few of them are completely drowned out by an apparent digital signal that sounds like a buzz saw. Hudson County Agencies Listing - Suggestions

Hoboken EMS is dispatched on whichever police frequency is being used as "emergency dispatch" - Hoboken alternates between F1 and F2. I've never heard any activity on the 471.525 frequency.

Guttenburg Fire frequency is not in use as Guttenburg is covered by North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue. Union City is also served by NHRFR.

Bergen County Agencies Listing - Errata (suggestions)

Demarest and Ridgefield listings should include the following header:

Police now dispatched on county P25 Trunk System. FIRE/EMS dispatched by county on their current VHF frequency.

"Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch" header(s) should be removed. Instead, listings for Glen Rock and Ridgewood should be include the following header:

POLICE/FIRE/EMS dispatched by Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch on below frequencies.

For municipalities of New Milford, Oradell, and River Edge the following header should be included:

FIRE/EMS dispatched by Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch on below frequencies.

"Central Communications" header should be removed. Instead, listings for Montvale, Park Ridge, and Woodcliff Lake should be added (including DPW/Local Government frequencies - similar to Glen Rock and Ridgewood listings) with the following header:

POLICE/FIRE/EMS dispatched by Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch on below frequencies.

Also, the RR listing states that "all law enforcement talk groups are encrypted." Actually, all COUNTY law enforcement talk groups are encrypted, the local agency law enforcement talk groups currently are not.

Portland Police dispatch

I usually listen to Clackamas County Law 1 (the main channel for urban area dispatch), along with fire, ambulance, and OSP for the same area. These are all coming in fine on my PSR 800. However, when I went into Portland the other day, I noticed I am only picking up the tac (chat) channels, and not the dispatch for PPB. My scanner has had all the updates from RR, but I'm not getting anything for central, east, or north dispatch at all. Have they gone encrypted? Or have they moved to another TG?

When I bought my PSR 800 about a year ago for nearly $600, I was hoping I had the latest and greatest. I know there is no scanner that will unscramble encryption. But as a side note, I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on the PSR 800 in general with regard to the fact that the RR updates will no longer be available after December 2014, since GRE is out of business. With the decline in Radio Shack business overall, I'm a little concerned as to how long Whistler will stay in the scanner business, if Radio Shack were to stop carrying their new products. Whistler is supposed to have a great new scanner (better than the PSR 800) on the market sometime by the end of the year, but I'm not sure if I should go with that, or try a Uniden instead. I want to be able to keep up to date with the best scanner, and even though I LOVE my PSR 800, there is definitely a concern if it will no longer be able to update with RR after this year. Would love to hear any feedback or suggestions.

460.1875 151.4 pl --> dps?

For 5 years I have had 460.1875 programmed in my everyday scan list. This freq is listed as DPS “Ch 7 Phoenix Metro North Patrol” in the Southwest Frequency Directory. Until this last week, I have never heard anything on this freq. Last week I heard was sounded like radio techs talking about antennas and SWR on 460.1875 with a PL of 151.4 (a common DPS PL tone). I cannot verify what I heard was DPS. It is a repeater, and I heard some repeater keyups today on the freq too.

Has anyone else heard this frequency? Anyone have any information on possible DPS frequency changes for the Phoenix Metro area in the near future?

Scanning the forest fire near Estacada

Anyone have any suggested frequencies for scanning the 36 Pit Fire near Lazy Bend Campground off Hwy 224? It's grown to 1,000 acres. Might be interesting to hear the radio traffic from the fire fighters on the ground and air. They have a helicopter doing water drops as well.

Does anyone know which frequencies they'd be using for the helicopter and the ground crews? I suspect there are multiple agencies involved. Media is also stationed nearby with their vans that have the satellite dishes on top, so they can provide live reporters on the scene during newscasts. I've never been able to find the frequencies for their conversations with producers back at the station right before they go on air. I'd like to head up there today or tomorrow to see what I can pick up, for any of the above. Suggestions are welcome if anyone has ideas. Thanks in advance for your help. Happy scanning to all.

radio noise in truck stereo

I have a pm400 vhf that was in my 01 explorer and it was used with no probs for about 4 yrs. I put the radio in my 01 Silverado and when I key the mic, I get a loud popping humming sound through my sound system that I never had in the explorer. the antenna is mounted on the roof via nmo hole mount, radio is mounted on my headliner console, grounded about 12" from it, power cable is spliced into my 4ga amp wire (maybe the prob?) that comes straight from the battery. what do yall think if I run my power cable to the radio directly from the battery or another good 12v power source? thanks for any help in advance!!

Tail End Charlie - New Chirp Woes

I have been using Chirp a LONG time and love it - let me get the lovefest out of the way. I had been using 2 different model Baofeng and decided to update my Chirp software to the latest daily build and add/update repeater changes on my 888s and my F8HP. Not many changes were made (Only 3 channels!) No error messages occurred whatsoever- BUT NOW -

I only open the repeater when I UNKEY on any channel, so it sounds like I am one of those clods that sits on a repeater and deadkeys every few minutes.

This happened with BOTH types of radios, obviously at the same time.

No new/different hardware/cables were used that have not been used countless times before.

As I said, I have no problem opening the repeater, but only for a couple of seconds when I actually unkey. Simplex operation is perfect and when I tune my scanner to the tx frequency, I hear myself.

Beyond odd.

antenna feedline impedance

The attached antenna plans call for a feedline length of at least 1/2 wavelength before the line bends toward the radio. What if i didnt have a 1/2 wavelength would it be negligent or very bad for the antenna?..also the attachment seems sloppy in the pic shouldnt the leads be kept as close as possible?

From Analog to Digital

If my city the FD is now analog, but are to change to Digital but not sure when that change over to digital will happen. My question is this, Being the city FD is analog now, can I also program the FD to Digital TG program also & activate the program to be ready ? Will that work ?

Short mobile scanner antennas

I’m looking for a great 108-900mhz monitor antenna with a NMO mount. I have used the PCTEL (MAXRAD) BMAXSCAN1000 for many years and I this is one of my favorite antennas. I recently tried the Larsen 150/450/800 and it seems to do a little better on VHF and UHF. I do not like the design of the Larsen as much as the PCTEL antenna. The Larsen antenna seems like cheap plastic and looks a little odd with the load being up higher.

What is everyone’s take on the best short (around 16”) mobile scanner antenna? Have I found the best antennas, or is there something else that is worth a look?

Wall wart help

I guess I tried to stretch the power cord for my PRO-160 too far, as the plug separated from the cord.

Of course, I can't lay my hand on instructions so I'm guessing that with the + on the plug lined up with the flat on the cord, the center conductor is positive, as indicated on the radio.

Will a kind soul please verify that I'm right.

Thanks.

BCD536HP Hard wire

I want to hard wire my BCD536HP in my vehicle but wasn't sure If I had to use the orange wire. Or can I just wire it with the traditional red and black ?

Uniden Home Patrol

I live in a small town and I am not able to pick up the police anymore, I can get fire though. My zip code is 02917, Smithfield, Rhode Island, does anyone know what the frequency is for the police and if the Uniden Home Patrol scanner will be able to pick it up? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Car's built in GPS with Uniden Scanner

I’m currently shopping for a new vehicle, and I will likely be going with a 2014-15 Ford Taurus. I’m planning to mount a BCD536HP and I would like to integrate a GPS.

I would like to avoid a separate GPS receiver and/or GPS antenna if possible. Since the car has navigation, a GPS receiver and GPS antenna onboard, has anyone had success in using a car’s built in GPS receiver with a Uniden scanner?

Ht-1550

Hello all, I'm new to motorola so I apologize if this has been covered in the past. I currently own a Kenwood tk-2180, it's a great radio and easy to program. I'm looking towards getting at motorola 1550 as it seems similar to what I have now. I've been reading a lot about motorola programming and it doesn't seem easy. Can anyone give me the bare bones on what it takes to program one and would it even be worth buying a motorola radio?

New with a question

Hey all obviously new here and new to the CB hobby, I had one in personal truck for a few years in the eighties but things have changed I am sure.

I bought a Uniden 590SSB radio and a 4' firestick-2 antenna on recommendation from a friend.

The question I have is on the antenna, did I get a good antenna or not, I have tried to do a search on here for their reviews but with no luck. I read on here about how good the Wilson antennas are but nothing on Firestick.

I understand that the antenna is paramount in the radio's performance and was wondering if I should cancel the order and go with A Wilson or other brand.

This is a mobile unit mounted on a Jeep with a great dedicated antenna mount on a tire carrier, base of antenna at the roof line and excellent metal contact all the way to jeep frame.

Thanks, Bruce.

Lake Stevens Police

Last night I was up there, and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out what they use. Research showed they are dispatched by SNOPAC as opposed to SnoCom (all police, fire, ambulance in SnoCo are dispatched by one of the two).

So which talkgroups do they operate on?

Med-Com Department San Antonio ?

Saw an update to the SA/BC Provoice system that added two talk groups under the heading of Med-Com Department with a tone out TG and and Ops TG. Never heard of this before does it have to do with Airlife? or is a private company on this system now.

HT1000 Narrowband

I just got two HT1000 DN models for a good price that included programming. I have a question regarding these radios. What would happen if say you had a wideband frequency and entered it as narrowband? Also how can I tell if a frequency is narrow or wideband?

The reason I ask this is because I had all the frequencies entered as narrow 12.5 KHz but I think that was a mistake on my part. I have a few frequencies that I for sure know were narrowband and they work fine with beautiful crisp RX audio. But on a few others there is the same humming/buzzing noise I had with another HT1000. I think that the buzzing is coming from entering the wideband frequencies as narrow. But I have very limited knowledge on this so that is why i'm asking you guys.

Would it help for me to list the frequencies?

Thank you

protecting yagi with PVC or other material

I am in the process of building a homemade yagi (for 2.4GHz). Once done I would like to be able to protect it from the elements and thought I could place it inside a PVC pipe. I cannot find any definitive answers on the web regarding the effects of PVC and 2.4GHz. Would PVC have any effect on the RF? Additionally, is there a material that would 'help' the directionality (narrow it) and/or the gain of the yagi?

Thanks

Registering WS-1080 on Whistler site

Has anyone successfully registered their new WS-1080, or for that matter, and new Whistler scanner, on their website. Under product registration at Whistler Group | High Performance Radar Detectors and Electronics, there is no category to register scanners, and where it says Select models, I see nothing.

I do see the WS-1080 listed plus the manual.

Thank you.

New to radios. Want to listen in.

Howdy folks.

My county is listed here. http://ift.tt/1tReYFB

What I would really like to do is purchase a used minitor v that would work on our county's public safety system, but I don't know if that'll work.

I really want to be able to listen in on our key channels (Dispatch 1, 2 & 3, as well as a handful of our Tac channels) but even just dispatch on a Minitor would be fine.

What's the best solution to being able to listen in on these frequencies, without dropping my entire wallet at the store, or online?

Once again, I'm new to radios in general, and have little knowledge with programming unless its basically step-by-step.

SSB on the IC-R1? Yes!

Ever since the Icom IC-R1 first came out 25 years ago, people had asked "could it receive SSB?" And the answer was no. Until now.

Icom IC R1 SSB demo 3 - YouTube

(there's other earlier demos too if you want to look for them)

Its long been a dream of mine to add SSB to the IC-R1, and have finally gotten around to modifying it to fit a BFO internally, which gets switched on by inserting a shorting plug into the 'line out' socket on the IC-R1. It's not perfect, the filters are a bit wide, and the smallest tuning steps of 0.5kHz mean that sometimes you won't get quite close enough to being 'spot on tune' - but as this video shows, it can work quite well.

The ham station received in the video is from Spain, received in Australia, with just the stock FA-4B Icom rubber duck antenna.

A while ago, I wrote a combined modification / review for a local scanning website, and this will soon be updated with the SSB mod for the Icom IC-R1; will post the URL here when that is ready.

DPS Conroe VHF or 1A7?

After being away from the hobby for a bit, I recently procured an Astro Saber VHF. I noticed I am hearing almost nil from DPS Conroe. The last I was actively monitoring (couple years ago), DPS was still primarily VHF and multicasting on 1A7 also. I knew they have talk groups on 1A7, but have they totally moved dispatch/routine traffic to TxWarn? I was looking forward to having the Statewide DPS plan in the radio, plus my regular analog Fire, RR, and ham favorites. But if DPS really doesn't use the VHF side anymore, I might as well go back to a Jedi series radio for VHF analog and put my p25 resources towards the 700/800 side of it.

Monitoring trunk system

I live in Grapevine, Texas and want to monitor mostly the local Grapevine PD channels.I presently do not have a digital scanner. The PD is part of the Northeast Tarrant County trunked APCO 25 system

Since I do not need thousands of channels and features, is there a lower priced scanner that can monitor APCO 25 digital with out costing $400 to $500?

Hi guys/gales;

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but, here it goes. Normally I can easily pick up over-the-air TV channels from both South Bend and Chicago but lately I haven't been able to get squat. I have tried re-aiming the antenna, different receivers, cables, etc. I know there is an bit of a space storm going on and was wondering if this could be affecting my reception?

Help reducing noise on FT-1900R

I recently installed a Yaesu FT-1900R in my car. I have it powered directly off the battery, and my signal is clean as a mountain spring. My issue is that the radio is so sensitive that I'm constantly getting buzzsaws and other noise—often at S9, so I can't even squelch it out. Aside from simply blocking out those frequencies, is there anything I can to to attenuate the signal a bit?

NASCAR race spammed/hacked/pirated

Chicagoland Raceway has been the victim of radio pirates.

Early in Saturday's Freaky Fast 300 championship NASCAR race, the ESPN2 commentators have apologized for unauthorized snippets of traffic when they thought they were listening and rebroadcasting pit-to-car transmissions. Also, it was noted during the broadcast that teams were switching channels a lot more than usual.

Understanding The 70cm Organization

I'm very confused about the 70cm band.

420-450 is listed as the band.

However, I see a lot of wireless equipment, mostly weather sensors, on 433 MHZ.

Most radios don't even cover the whole band, just 430-450, or some, 440-450.

I've read the ARRL band plan, and a lot of other info that I can find, and I've yet to come across any info about it being a shared band, or Hams being secondary users on some portions.

Any more experienced operations care to enlighten me?

Thanks,

How do I connect 436HP for virtual control?

I am running Windows 8.1, trial versions of ARC536PRO and ProScan, have the OEM USB cable, the DMA 396 OEM USB cable, a serial DMA cable, and two USB to serial port converters. Neither program is seeing my scanner, and ProScan doesn't even list the 436HP. Tried the UpMan PL2303 v1.6 driver as well as the newer v1.9 Prolific drivers. I am at a loss here. The ARC software is insisting I connect the USB cable, which I am reading everywhere simply DOES NOT WORK. Regardless, when I connected it, it doesn't see the scanner.

I tried this previously on my Windows 7 PC, but had identical results. My trials ran out, so I had to move this to the Windows 8.1 PC. Sentinel works fine with this scanner though, but I need to control it, not program it. Thanks.

I will preface this by saying I never owned the PSR-800, so it is going to take me a while to get up to speed with the software.

That said, "You must be kidding me, some people think the PSR-800 (now the WS-1080) is better than the 436HP. Well we must be on a different planet. Because I sure don't. Granted it is only day 1 and I need to learn the radio. But already the screen is scratched. Had it out less than 4 hours, and the screen is scratched.

Then, sometimes the speaker would not come on when had the USB cable plugged into it to use it without the batteries. That seemed to resolve after a while, but have no idea why. Why did I use the USB cable after a couple of hours? Because I could watch the battery indicator going down as I used the scanner. I mean pretty fast.

To be fair, the P25 audio quality sounds a bit more natural on the WS-1080, but not by much. Whereas the P25 decode, in my opinion, is better on the 436HP. This seemed true both on the LAPD conventional P25 and ICIS P25 trunk system.

The big deal for me is the flexibility of the 436HP/536HP to do things on the fly. Maybe I am just used to the Favorite List/Sentinel program now, but I find that very flexible. With no keys to really do anything on the WS-1080, I feel lost.

Yes, the VHF was a bit better on the WS-1080, but not by much. And the 436HP has the nice big display. With the WS-1080, its pretty much the old smaller display. Maybe I am different, but besides hearing the channels and TGs, I like to see lots of information about them.

Again to be fair, I want to give it a couple of weeks with good comparisons between the WS-1080 and 436HP. But something tells me early on (kind of like when I met girls way back in the 1970s - now married 38 years) that the 436HP/536HP are going to continue to be my workhorse scanners.

In fact, I told Jeff at Ham Station to put me on the list for a 1095, but if it is basically the same as the 1080, I probably will forget it.

I realize that I am comparing the PSR-800 to the 436HP, and for me, at least on day 1, it is hands down the 436HP for me in Los Angeles in terms of on the fly flexibility to narrow down what I want to hear from literally thousands of stations. But I may change my mind after a week or two when I get used to EZ scan. Again, however, the inability to use third party software like Butel, ProScan, or Win-500 with the PSR-800/WS1080 is a big negative for me.

set screw connectors

What are the pros/con's of setscrew connectors? I had to replace a connector on an old mount I had yesterday and I said I may as well try it at least for a temp setup to see how it was and so far its working nice but I wanted others opinions on them also

Realistic Pro-2001 Freq search function

I just got ahold of a great, old, Realistic Pro-2001. 16 channels of LED bliss. Although #16 seems to be either shot out or reserved for something. Programmed it easy enough with a Radio Shark search. Has neat FS & SS buttons that seem to stand for Fast Search & Slow Search. It has a frequency search feature but I cannot seem to figure out how to program the ' up ' & ' lo ' of the search parameters. Rat Shack doesn't have any info on it & searching online proved fruitless! No one here seems to have asked either...

I have tried going mobile with my Homepatrol 1 and it is tough to hear the speaker inside my car. What do you use to get the volume up ? I have a good Motorola speaker and it still does not work.

Nexedge in Toronto

After reading the thread about WinDSD created by Eric Cotrell in the software forum, I thought I'd give it a shot and try it out.

It was easy to find the MBC system off of the CN Tower and I was able to log some details.

Clear voice decodes on NEXEDGE and DMR also.

NYPD CW3 info

So I was listening to NYPD CW3 and I heard a unit come over as "Bus Unit RMP #3346" so I wanted to know if anyone on here could tell me: A.) What is the bus unit? B.) What is their purpose? C.) An estimate of how many cops could be in that unit? D.) What bureau are they assigned to?

and finally E.) What other units use CW3 regularly?

New User - Pro97 Question - Pro97 Programming

Hey everyone,

I'm a new scanner user working with a Radio Shack Pro97 Scanner. I programmed the scanner using Win97. I'm computer proficient, but new to the scanning world. It looks to me like it's programmed properly, but I'm not picking up anything. At first I thought the scanner might be broken, but when switched over to the weather channels it works fine.

I've attached a zip file containing a CSV backup. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Have a great day!

PWC PD

Noticed today all daytime East end PD traffic coming across on TG3122, tonight (after the 1630hrs split of east and central) hearing TG3122 and TG1003. Nothing at all on TG1005. Thought it worth mentioning. Anyone else notice any slight changes in the TGs?

Memphis/Shelby County System Clarification

System has two sites. MPD, MFD, SCSO, SCFD are on site one, correct? Hospitals are only on site two? Right now, my 106 is programmed to scan both sites for the former agencies and it takes awhile to go through both systems. I think I should only have these programmed into site one, right? Any other vagaries in the system not noted in the database.

Thanks for your patience.

BCD436HP Problem With Clip Holding Micro Chip

I have experienced problems with the clip that holds the microchip. (SD Card)

Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Hearing the control channel in the background.

Is it normal for you to slightly hear the control channel in the background of a transmission? I'm using a BCD996XT and It happens mostly on the same TG Channel. At times, other ones, too.

It doesn't affect audio or anything at all, just a general question. Maybe I gotta fiddle with my settings? Because I've never heard it before.

Thanks.

I need to re download ARC500 and i cannot do it

any help. I do have my key codes too

New Looking where to post

Hello All,

I am new to this forum looking for some information on our HYT Radios.

We have 4 HYT-TC508s 2 HYT 610s

I was having some trouble with short distance only. We do a lot of work in hospitals in NJ NY CT, can anyone recommend any good frequencies? Like i said I'm new to this forum and commercial grade radios. Hopefully ya don't beat me over the head, haha ;)

Heard good things about Hytera so we scooped a few up.

Main concerns is we are looking for some decent range in hospitals and large high rise buildings currently the HYTs are only going 1-2 floors.

Spectrum Monitoring article on spectrum analyzer

Has anyone here played with the USB dongle RF spectrum analyzer from RF VIEWER -- Low-Cost, RF Spectrum Analyzer | RF VIEWER — Low-Cost, RF Spectrum Analyzer

From the article : a low cost USB dongle RF

spectrum analyzer covering 24 – 1766 MHz with the capability

of scanning up to 300 MHz of spectrum at a time.

The package includes one RTL-SDR dongle, mini-antenna,

instructions for downloading Touchstone-Pro (the

companion software) to a Windows-based PC, a key code

(via email from NutsAboutNets) to access Touchstone-Pro

RF Spectrum Analyzer software and lifetime of free software

upgrades. A free download of the demonstration version of the

software is available for those interested prior to purchase by

going to the Ebay site.

There is a real interesting article about this in the September issue of Spectrum Monitor on line mag. ( The Spectrum Monitor ) This on line mag is by the way a very decent replacement to the late Monitoring Times mag.

I am just now getting into the SDR world and curious if this a worthwhile device. Early days of experimenting.

Confused About Live Feed Achives

I signed up for the premium subscription so I could listen to police live feed archives. I wanted a specific town and time as I reported a good friend of mine that wanted to attempt suicide in Rock Hill, SC. I live in Lexington, SC. He called me at 10:55 pm last night and told me he was going to shoot himself, told me goodbye and hung up. I proceeded to call the Rock Hill Sherriff's Office round 11:30 or after...I know before midnight. They got the information about his name, address, phone number and told me they would call me when they went to his house to determine if he was okay or not. The police called me back from outside of his house to ask me a few more questions, at which time I heard someone in the background say the suspect has a gun, then the police officer said he had to go and hung up. No word for a couple hours, so I tried calling his house, he answered and hung up two time, the third time he kept saying hello, hello, like he couldn't hear me and put the phone down. I could hear him in the back ground saying that he didn't want anyone on his property and that if anyone came through his door he had a 38 to his head and would kill himself. The police called me while I was on the phone and told me that my call was interrupting the negotiator and to hang up which I did immediately. Bob, finally called me 3 hours later and was still inside of his house with the police still outside and talked to me for 20 minutes crying and telling me he was sorry, I pleaded with him to turn himself in, but he said he had nothing left to live for and hung up. I called the sheriffs office this morning and just asked for them to tell me if he was okay or not. They told me that she could not give me the information and would have someone call me back....no one has called me back. I just need to know if he is alright, if I can't achieve the police feed, can someone do this and just tell me if he is okay or not...that's all I want to know.please! My email is janrhys1980@gmail.com. Thank you anyone that can help.

More Trooper Changes

I am now hearing both sides of the Alabama State Troopers on 154.920. It is acting like a repeater. It use to be where I would have to listen to the base on 154.920 and the car on 155.445. Now it is all on 154.920.

BCD436HP Sentinel Software Question

Well I broke down and purchased the BCD436HP the other day ...

I watched all the YouTube Videos as well as read the manual over and over again.

So I decided to start small and set up a Favorite list

I decided to set a list from Calgary to Cranbrook, BC

I assigned quick keys to each county ... Foothills, Willow Creek, Pincher Creek, Crowsnest

After uploading ... I can get the Favorite Key (#2) to work ...

It seems to be stuck on Crowsnest #4 ... RCMP A2

It says it's scanning but I don't see anything happening.

I have set the Range to Max ...

Hoping I could at least get Foothills.

If I press the Favorite # + E ... and turn it off.

It says "nothing to Scan"

Suggestions as to what I'm doing Wrong?

How to check on the status of Groups 1-2-3?

Thanks

Urgent help - anyone monitoring allen/plano pd pawn this past week

Hello all RR enthusiasts,

I am a radio enthusiast myself, KG5BDB, but was injured in a massive four car pile up on Tuesday,

09-SEP-14 at approximately 1530 hours driving southbound I75 aka North Central Expressway.

Does anyone out there have a radio or audio log of that time frame for the PAWM (Plano, Allen, Wylie and Murphy) networks and the PD dispatch talk groups? I'm trying to determine why the cars were stopped in the road already (did they have a breakdown or a prior accident). I ended up on the backend of it and totaled my car I owned for only a month too (besides it catching on fire so the FD talk group might have it too).

If anyone out there can help me or heard the transmission on the PAWM FD or PD talk groups of Allen and/or Plano, I would appreciate it very much. What. I really need is a recorded audio log, but if any of you heard this and have the text print log of this - that would be appreciated as well.

Thank you all RR members,

Brian - KG5BDB

APX 7000 "Invalid Codeplug"

I recently acquired a VHF/700 Model III APX 7000. When I tried to read it with the CPS, it gave me an "Invalid Codeplug" error. It'll read the model and flashcode configuration. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the flashcode is set to all zeros. Unfortunately, I don't have any codeplugs to load in to the radio. Is there a workaround for this, or is this a lost cause?

536hp sd card speed

So I purchased a new sd card class 4 scandisk 8 GB loaded the same data onto it from the card that came with the scanner.

Why does the new card scan and write to the scanner twice as fast as the default?

Should I go to a class 6 card for faster speed or does this make no difference?

Apx6000 Bluetooth

Hello all, wondering if anyone has tried any cheap bluetooth ear buds or ear piece on the apx6000 or apx7000. I figured that it would have to be A2dp. I did try the 2 I have which are stereo bluetooth ear buds and they did not work, but my bluetooth speaker did.

Radio Programming

I am soon to receive two Kenwoods (TK-790/TK-890), and the software to program them.

My question is this - there are other radios in the department I need to copy, so can I connect the computer to the head while they are set up together (two radios/one head) and download the load, or do they have to be separated before I can download the frequencies from each one?

Thanks!

BCD436HP A better BCD436HP internal speaker?

Twice in the the two months I've owned my 436, the speaker has blown. After a three week wait for a 10 minute fix, I'll have had my radio in the shop for 6 weeks out of the 10 or so I've owned it. It's really frustrating since it has never been above 11, maybe 12 on the volume. I think the issue lies in the <lack of> AGC that doesn't seem to do anything on the P25 systems in the area. I'd like to try finding a more robust speaker that I could install myself. Anyone tried or have any ideas about this?

BCD436HP P-25

I am trying to listen to Polk County Texas, I know that everybody says P-25 is a P-25 system no matter who makes it. Polk Couty Texas is a ICOM P-25 system and they are garbled, I can program a motorola P-25 system and everything is fine. What do I need to do to be able to monitor a Icom P-25 system with my BCD436HP ???

Thanks Much

Longmont Area, Fire and EMS scanning

I see Longmont, as well as Mountain View Fire are listed with both VHF Freq's and DTRS talkgroups

Which is the best way to monitor them?

I've got a new BCD396XT and I"m still learning - in spite of the 273 page manual ;-)

I'm hearing Longmont POLICE just fine on their VHF frequencies but I have yet to hear any Fire or EMS traffic.

When I look at the VHF page in the database it says they're on DTRS

When I go the Boulder County section for the DTRS it states that they're still on VHF

I am looking for either a place to buy one of these, but I believe that they are discontinued, or suggestion for a similar replacement. They will be using Jedi connectors on the XTS5000 radios.. Thanks in advance

Where is everyone ordering coax from?

I'm looking to buy ~100ft of Belden 8267 (RG-213). Problem is, the cheapest I can find it ~$1.15/ft. I found some knockoff from Amateurradiosupply.com for $0.75/ft, but I'm afraid it is crap quality and would be worth the extra $30 to get the real stuff.

Has anyone got some hidden gem of a dealer selling the OEM Belden stuff for under $1/ft?

HomePatrol LCD screen messed up

I have been so busy with my 436HP and 536HP, with comparisons with my 396XT and 996XT, that I have not turned on my HP1 with Extreme in a couple of months. Last night I turned it on, and surprise, the LCD screen had a 1 inch black spot (star-shaped) up in left upper corner, 50% of the rest of the screen pure white, and the rest was very unclear. Obviously my LCD screen has crapped out. Anyone else ever experienced this problem with HP1. Scanner is about 2 years old, so I know the warranty is expired. Is this something Uniden can fix if I send it in. Any advice please.

Thank you

BCDx36HP Computer Software Programming Request/Challenge

I recently picked up 2 BCD536HPs. One will be remote mounted in my vehicle (2006 Chevy Trailblazer) under the rear deck, and controled with a Windows Tablet. I have everything setup in the house right now, and the system works with regards to the tablet being able to control the scanner and give a remote display of the display. This is replacing a BCD996XT with the RH-96 control head, so it's a matter of running the RS-232 cable-everything else was already in place. The system is part of a remote fuse block that controls all of my electronics, and is controlled by a relay which is switched at the dash.

The issue is the display size available in the software. Considering it's going to be mounted on a RAM mount to my left, I need a bigger display/interface than either Proscan or ARC536 provide. I have looked at the various magnification programs out there, but none of them are window specific. I am not a programmer, so I do not know what would be involved in making the display/control windows able to increase in size. I would like the option for 100%, 200% or full screen-am I overreaching?

Rutgers/New Brunswick

Hi. Until recently the security guards at Rutgers NB (not the police officers) were on 470.725. But i've heard nothing on that freq for the last week or two. Does anybody know what's up with this? Thanks.

ICOM CI-5 Protocol to Ethernet adaptor

It seems to me that this could be quite useful i.e. control or monitor etc any scanner support CI-5 over the Net.

The alternative is a scanner with a built in web server which no one appears to have produced to date?

And no, I do not want to set up a PC just for this purpose. Something like a Raspberry Pi could also handle CI-5 to Ethernet without even blinking, however my preferred programming language is solder.

President Cheney

This is something I've wondered about for years but Dick won't return my calls. ;)

Does anyone know how it came about, and from whom, that decided Cheney would lead the search for W's vice president and then ends up picking himself?

I don't know why but this has always intrigued me to no end.

Thanks

Dublin CHP question

Is Dublin CHP set up differently? I drove through today to Walnut Creek from Stockton. Switched over to Dublin hitting the Alameda County line on 580. The entire trip in I only got dispatch on the base. On the way out I got roughly 2-3 units that came up along with dispatch. What am I missing there or what do they not have turned on?

CHP pursuit - Watsonville

I heard a long lived pursuit today by CHP for someone wanted on assault on officer (code was attempted murder PC 187). I was able to follow it on the scanner up until the guy went off into the woods, so was not able to find out the outcome.

This was broadcast on CHP Monterey Black channel.

Anyone else pick this up?
