APX Programming Issues

I recently acquired an APX7000 with DTMF keypad and screen. When I tried programming it, the software (APX R07) won't read the radio. It will give me an "Application Has Encountered an Error" message when I try to connect to the radio. I'm using a USB cable, and when I turn on the radio with the cable attached, I get the standard "USB Device Connected" notification sound from Windows. I'm using Windows 8 on a 64-bit laptop, if that helps any.
