I'm trying to put together a basic emergency package and of course one of the concerns is communications. I'd like to find a set of handheld units that will give a realistic range of perhaps 10 miles. All of my local family members live within that distance from me and each other. I'd like to identify something that could be placed in an emergency kit should some disaster disable cellular and landline communications. I don't want to use any ham based repeater systems as they are reliant on local power availability and require licensing to use. I'm guessing it will be GMRS which of course does require license but that's easy enough for all involved to obtain. They don't want to deal with testing for ham licenses. I know we have operating GMRS repeaters in the area but I want something that will give an honest 10 miles of useable range in simplex mode. Any ideas? Thanks.
