Tape recorder and scanner questions

Hi guys,

I'm looking at getting a bc346xtc. If purchased, it would be my first Uniden scanner. But back to the main point of this thread, I'm curious if I can hook up a tape recorder to this scanner. I have seen a lot of tape recorders in the big box stores that store the recordings on a sd card. That's my first question, my second question is if this is possible how do I hook it up to my scanner? Is the a cord included or is it something separate I have to buy.

What Is Your Favorite Federal Government To Listen To

This thread will be about your favorite Federal Government to listen too and why you like listening to them. Is it because it is not ENC or because they can be funny sometimes like our local Federal prison. I will start off. My favorite Federal Government is the Federal prisons because they are funny like I said. And I am used to listening to them.

Home Patrol 1 and Bose Mini Speaker

I am amazed by how much more volume and better sound there is hooking up the bose speaker, I have it hooked up through the line out, and it is loud....I have the speaker turned down on the scanner... I like !!! Plus I can use the speaker for listening to music when needed from the I-Pad.... Great little speaker Bose's makes...

Horry County on Pro 164

I have had my Pro 164 for about three years and RS programmed it at purchase and it worked great until last Friday, now it will not scan. I upgraded to Firmware 1.08 and it still will stay locked on a channel and does not scan, anyone have any ideas.

Audio compressor for scanner

A friend asked me recently if I could come up with a circuit that he could use with his scanner to equalize the volume of the various stations he receives on his scanner. He was frustrated by the fact that if he turned up the volume to hear the "quiet" signals (narrow modulation, etc.), that he would then get blasted by the loud signals.

I came up with a fairly simple circuit. The input comes from the speaker-out of the scanner. The output of the circuit is a low-level, high-impedance output, designed to be put into an audio amplifier (since his plan was to use an audio distribution amplifier anyway).

I have two videos that describe the circuit. The first is on the bench, describing the schematic and demonstrating its operation using a signal generator. The second video shows the circuit in use with a scanner.

Here are the video links:

I hope you find this useful.

Sac city fire question

I am able to pick up the dispatch and B2 not I am not able to get any traffic on any of the tac channels did I, or am I doing something wrong?

SO close with DSD+ ! I need some suggestions!

I am so close with DSD +. Unitrunker is working as advertised. So, my problem has got to be from SDR# to DSD Plus. I have VB Audio cable going into DSD+ with levels between 35-40. It seems to work 2 out of 10 times. Should my levels be higher or lower? I’m pretty sure I have all the things checked and unchecked that I should. But who knows, it only takes one to mess it up. Anybody have any suggestions? BTW, I am decoding PV.

Thanks

Zebulon to Raleigh

Will be working on a job site in Zebulon for awhile, traveling back and forth to Raleigh. Can anyone suggest the best frequencies to keep me up to date with road conditions? Thanks!

PD Exercise in High Point 7/30

Between deliveries yesterday I caught the last 45 minutes of an exercise on PD TAC H. Interesting listening!

The scenario was a school shooting and a pipe bomb. Wish I could have caught the entire exercise. It was over by 2:30pm.

Pro 106 scan list question

Hi guys just reading in the wiki that the pro 106 can hold 22 scan lists is that true even though it can hold 36,000 freqs? Doesn't make sense to me. Is there a way to expand the memory

Eastern valley fire new talkgroup

Eastern valley fire now has a cross patch from vhf to 800.

It is a true p25 talk group.

The Id is 34608

Suction Cup antenna ??

When I put up this antenna should I have up and down or across the window ? My son lives in a mobile home and wants to have a police scanner in his room.

New FDNY talkgroups

I'm hearing FDNY activity on DOITT UHF talkgroups 4512 and 4544. Usage sounds similar to that on the FDNY "Special events" talkgroups, i.e., fireground-type communications. Does anyone have any info on these? Are there any other new tg's?

Va. Beach ORION Multi site

I am posting this here, so locals will be able to explain the issue.

I have read that the issue listening to this type of system is that there are several sites broadcasting the same information and the scanner has a hard time discerning between the two. If this is correct I cannot seem to find where the "other" sites are. The info looks like the site is on top of Station 16. No others are listed. I am trying to get me head around this issue so I can again enjoy this hobby.

If there are other sites I am looking for the closest to me so I can aim my antenna.

Hopefully this is clear.

Thanks

Wanted: Power Cord for R71A

Does anyone know where I can located the AC power cord for a R71A. Thanks

Roadway Inn Frequency For Atlantic City??

I will be staying here for a couple nights in the future (oceanside location) and was wondering if anyone had confirmed frequencies this hotel group uses. I believe they are licensed as Gateway Enterprises, but couldn't find anything in the FCC database. I know there are a few of these chain hotels located in Atlantic City and wasn't sure if they have a set nationwide frequency or perhaps just use one of the common business frequencies. I found that in other locations across the country, RR lists them for 462.8125 and 463.475.

Bearcom BC10 Operation

I'm new here, and new to radio operation, but I seem to have reached a dead end to my research on the Bearcom BC10.

I picked one of these up recently, and was wondering how I could program it or use it. Maybe someone knows of a users manual I could download?

I was able to determine what frequencies the 4 channels transmit on, but I'm not able to get it to receive. The light blinks to indicate it's receiving, but no audio comes out unless I put it on monitor. I have a Motorola CLS 1110 that I'd like to use with it. The Motorola has tons of documentation on it, but the Bearcom, not so much.

What I do know is the radio is a re-branded Tekk XU-100. But the display is a lot different, and it doesn't seem like I'm able to program it from the radio. There is a program button that when I hold it down and turn on the radio it says "P" on the display, but doesn't let me do anything.

Thanks for any help.

BCD436HP managing favorites list (Sentinel)

When I open up my favorites list I have many groups, I would like to sort them by alphabetical order to simplify finding the list I'd like to activate, yet I can't figure it out.

I know I can edit the groups within the "Favorites List" by clicking the star and pencil icon, however I'm taking about the (departments???) that immediately appear when you click the + next to the "Favorites List" on the main screen .

please excuse my lack of terminology associated with this radio, I just got it a week ago and I'm still figuring out the kinks (dept, system, etc.)

Thanks!

Aftermarket batteries

Hi guys. Was wondering if theres any place out there that sells good batteries for motorola radios, besides motorola themselves? Looking for jedi series batteries.. Thanks in advance..

BCD396XT Counterpoise on BCD396XT

Decided to try this on the hand held scanner and it improved my rx. We have a small p25 police department that is about 5+ mi from me and I can't pick them up unless I am using a large antenna, (something other than portable any duck antenna). Stuck the counterpouse which is about 19" ± and screwed the stock antenna and lone n behold receive is 99% better. Just thought I would share this.

Bruswick County Ten Codes

Does anyone have the 10 codes for Brunswick county and the Ocean Isle, Sunset Beach area? I have the ones for Orange county but I think that they vary from department to department, or from county to county.

holy acceleration!

so driving home yesterday, i missed the beginning of the whole series of events on the radio, but a state trooper was working his way up the highway. as i approached the initial 'scene' traffic was compacted but moving as he was clearing, shutting off lights, and apparently getting back into traffic. fast. like, gone, now.

he broke away as did a few other vehicles myself included.

he then slowed up at a courtesy patrol van who was stopped with a vehicle. he more or less came to slow creep in the slow lane, with no traffic behind him for probably half a mile. i got into the middle lane as i saw him slowing and began slowing myself but still managed to catch up to him. almost. he shut the light back off and holy hell took off. the roar of that thing was loud in my vehicle. the smell of the exhaust was pungent, and he was off to the next...whatever. this all happened pretty quick and i was monitoring another channel, so once i exited i managed to catch the tail end of this units transmission at the stop that he took off for.

it was a fast, impressive display of shear power out of the state troopers charger. it was almost like the traffic cooperated and he was having fun cranking through a couple quick stops. anyone know what they do to the chargers for police use? i mean, the thing was like a souped up drag car or something!

BFRS Tac Channels

For the last several days when ever dispatch sends units over to a tac channel and i flip the scanner to the one they are suppose to be using I never hear anything. Dispatch comes in just fine but for some reason the tac channels seem not to be working on my end. Nothing had changed program wise and they have always worked in the past. Any new CC's maybe??

(A few minutes ago they dispatched a house fire and told responding units to respond on tac-1, i have yet to hear anything.)

"Affiliation" question(s)

I have a question about how to handle statewide/state police type TGID's.

Looking over the MPSCS there is a mix of stand alone towers and simulcast systems. I'm trying to decide how best to set up a statewide type scan list in my PSR 800 to capture any activities on those TGID's in SE Michigan specifically.

Would it matter if i included all towers that could be within receiving range, or perhaps just the stand alone towers? For example the G-Event01 TGID could be used for any number of purposes by any number of users, so if you wanted the best chances for receiving activity should i just hit up all towers, or is there a key point about how that TGID affiliates? I get how, for example, Livonia is going to adhere mostly to the Northville tower but i'm scratching my head on how the statewide capable stuff works.

if it were set up to do so, could a radio in dundee talk to a radio in copper harbor?

UP Helicopter/ Med Flight

Marquette General Hospital in conjunction with Valley Med Flight started Helo Life flight services in the UP in June 2014.

1.) Has anyone heard any traffic from them

2.) If you have, what TG's are you hearing them on?

Not use to having Helo Life flight ops around here, I don't see any TG's assigned to Valley Med Flight but there were 2 TG's listed in the database

1567 61f D AIR LZ 1 Air Landing Zone Coordination 1 EMS-Tac

1568 620 D AIR LZ 2 Air Landing Zone Coordination 2 EMS-Tac

Are these statewide Generic TG's that are used by Helos to communicate with Fire Depts or PD to coordinate on scene landings????

Pro-197 ignoring TGRP problem solved

I'm just putting this out here in case someone else runs into this problem.

Problem was I programmed the pro-197 to scan some talkgroups on an EDACS system. At first I just programmed a wildcard group so I could see I was receiving OK. I then deleted the wildcard talkgroup, and programmed in about 10 specific talkgroups. Started scanning on the pro-197 and it never stopped on any of them. I had the bc346xt right next to it and it was receiving talkgroups just fine. If I manually selected a talkgroup on the pro-197 I knew was active (from watching the bc346xt), I could then hear talking on that talkgroup. But while scanning, the pro-197 would never stop on an active talkgroup.

Well, after trying several things, I finally came across a setting way down in the expert section of the GLOB menu called "TGRP Ignore". It was set to YES. I changed it to NO and starting scanning and FINALLY the scanner was stopping on the talkgroups I had programmed in.

Not sure how things got messed up like that. I usually do program scanners by hand, but have tried some of the free trial programs as well. On my other pro-197, I haven't noticed any talkgroups not getting any traffic, but just to be on the safe side, I set the "TGRP Ignore" setting to NO on that one too.

Baofeng UV82L

I have a Baofeng UV82L and I use CHIRP to program the memory channels. My issue is when scanning A channels if I stop on a memory preset channel the B channel does not correspond. I am operating on repeaters so I have A set to RX and B to TX. So I need to select the correct B channel to match A. When I transmit on B it stays on that channel and I have to hit the exit A/B button to switch back to channel A to listen. Is there a way to set it to monitor A all the time so when I transmit on B it automatically switches back to A for listening purposes? And to automatically go to the corresponding memory channel on B to match A Channel 5 on A and Channel 5 on B so I don't have to manually set the correct TX on B to match A. Clear as mud?

Wasaga beach area info needed

Heading to wasaga area this weekend. Is MOH on the Georgian simcoe talkgroup. And besides the beat repeater what talkgroup / site is opp for that area?

Edit.....oh and I guess, any other interesting listening up there?

MilAir in S.E. Michigan?

I've been away from scanner for a few years. Is MilAir still active, and in the clear on the VHF/UHF frequencies in AM mode? I recall reading that a lot of is was changing.

I'm mostly interesting in the Selfridge ANG Base in Harrison Twp, MI.

BCD436HP Analyze Feature -Will Uniden Accept Returns?

When purchasing your product, the BCD436HP, you promoted a feature that is apparently

still not working (analyze).

Given the claim that this feature was included in your product, it is an act of fraud (in my opinion)

to mislead a potential buyer of a product with a feature your company promoted the product would have,

and have not repaired.

Will Uniden accept returns --directly--?

**Note: If this problem has been solved, and a download is available at this time, I was / am not aware

of it, please disregard the above statement, If not, I think customers deserve a clear response.

Boulder/Broomfield Pursuit, as paged

And now a little iScan strangeness

I wanted to program in the Nassau County (NY) 500 Mhz trunked system.

Now, it is mostly encrypted (MEDCOM and Fire are in the clear) and it is going to be Phase II in the future, but it is not now.

The iSCan software shows the system in the library, with an X. It can not be loaded.

Now, the PSR-800 software does load that system, so it is not the encryption that is holding it back, more likely the future Phase II use?

But, I programmed it manually and guess what? Works great in the PRO-18. OF course, it does not receive the encrypted TGs, but it just grabs and decodes the clear digital groups just fine.

So why it is not allowed to be programmed? Strange.

SDR Wow!

Just got a NooElec SDR R820T and SO-239 cable adapter and I am hooked!. I am new to SDR and there is so much to learn out there. I have read allot of posts in this forum which answered tons of questions so thanks to everyone for sharing their experience and knowledge. Probably will get another one for Unitrunker and DSD.

Who could imagine a $25.00 USB stick could do so much!.

And this why I always say:

I have pretty often mentioned that the newer scanners can really monitor just about everything that is monitorable. When it comes to fleetnet I will explain why I always say to punch in all the talkgroups that are relevant.

I monitor Brantford and Cayuga on a regular basis. I mentioned earlier in the month that on of the MTO Enforcement talkgroups dispatched by London had the Middlesex and Elgin Co units patched with it.

People here sometimes complain, or they dont know how to really get the best use of their scanner while monitoring fleetnet. With the newer scanners, you will hear Middlesex units and Elgin units patched together. But if you enter in the MTO Enforcement talkgroups, even if they are boring or barely used I had them on and I heard the Middlesex and Elgin patch, patched with this MTO Enforcement talkgroup.

I love hearing these things, I record the RID's, I follow calls out of my area. It's fun to scan like this for me at least.

And I noticed over the last couple of days, activity on the MNR 2784 talkgroup, OPS 2 Soutwest Ontario, London Dispatch.

So I first an surprised when I see this rare talkgroup active and better still, I hear 6 Mike and 6 Alpha Papa units calling in. Check the DB and my files, see that 6 Mike is Lambton, I am hearing places in Lambton that sound familiar so I confirm I wasnt hearing things.

And luckily, I know a guy out that way who once told me that Alpha Papa units are 1st nations police and there is a reserve that fits in the city of Sarnia, North of LaSalle line which divides town of St.Clair.

In closing, I am saying that, if you stop hearing your normal chatter on fleetnet do some investigating. If you live even in a rural area where the OPP might or might not police, there are provincial roads all over the province. Even in desolate (for air traffic) Bruce County, if I stopped hearing the Romeo units on the 'pen, the Grey Lima units and the South Bruce units I would either run my scanner in search or before hand, have all the MTO Enf's talkgroups, at least for London dispatch and all of the 6 units in SW Ontario and the MNR London Dispatches.

Summer time I imagine that there are more patches put in place to cover for vacationing peoples or whatever, expect the unexpected and make sure you have your scanner set up to be able to scan and search.

Programming help with the BCD439HP

Hello All,

I'm having trouble with programming my new Uniden BCD436HP. I don't think I have the MPSCS set up correctly. The problem I'm having is that it seems to be scanning but it's not picking up on any of the local police or fire frequencies. I'm not hearing anything. I live in Macomb county and I am trying to listen to Macomb Simulcast and Detroit City Simulcast. Is there a way to assign a specific frequency to these that I'm not doing? I know it's something simple I'm overlooking. Appreciate any help.

Thanks

What happend to the Macomb County Sheriff (Michigan) feed?

What happed to the Macomb County Sheriff (Michigan) feed? I heard a rumor that the original provider had a falling out with RR. How come no one has picked it up since? Did the Sheriff scare everyone away?

Thanks,

Silent Key

It is with regret, that I wanted to report we lost not only a local good ham radio operator at the young age of 37 years old, but also a member to this website. Brent Willcox, KD5WYU, user name: BWillcox passed away yesterday here in Texas. I wanted to add that he was a loyal member not just to this website but also our local ham radio club the Denton County Amateur Radio Association. I am sure all of the local operators and user will miss having him apart of the hobby. RIP Brent

Canton Twp. Fire Dept.

Does anyone know what happened to Canton Fire. I have not heard anything on their VHF frequency or their 800 Tg.for the last couple of days, of course the Canton PD is encrypted. Just wondering.

High power radio installation considerations

Move to installation sub forum please.

Does anyone know of any special considerations in installing a high power radio (PM1500 VHF) in a car? Other than the power requirements, the radio is rated for 110 watts. Is there any specific place an antenna would be better suited? As of now it's on the trunk with a wideband PCTel antenna, with 2.4 db gain on a ground plane. The car is a 2012 Malibu. Currently have a 35 watt Kenwood 7180 in place.

BCFD DISP

Anyone able to bring back the online feed of Balto City's VHF dispatch channel?

What to name a talkgroup?

I want to submit a new talkgroup for the database, but I'm not sure how it should be tagged and described.

Earlier this afternoon, for about an hour or so, I listened to my local PD follow suspects involved in **not sure what** as I didn't hear the beginning of the transmission. It sounded like the suspects were on foot at first and then got in a vehicle since the officers involved were talking about license plates.

Would something like this be tagged as Law Tac and described as Police Surveillance, or would some other description be better? Or, should I wait to submit it until I hear more traffic on this TGID? Today is the first time I have ever seen this TG come up while my 536HP did its ID Searching thing. At first I thought it was on the state system, but when I looked at the display more closely, I saw it was the city's trunk system.

Any suggestions and/or comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Morongo Basin Ambulance

For any who listen to this area, some insider information that Morongo Basin Ambulance is going to be moving away from the county system and onto their own UHF system. The frequencies are available from the FCC database.

Most of the repeaters are linked, though not simulcast, except for the one on Onyx, which is a standalone due to distance from the primary response area. I'll try to figure out which ones equate with which channels (and alpha tags) on the unit and HT radios. So far all I have is this:

Need a new scanner antenna

Hey guys I have a Radio Pro-164 and I need a new antenna for it. I am not listening to any 700mhz frequencies or higher. Theses are the radio frequencies I listen, to I live in El Dorado Hills, up the hill from Sacramento in California. I listen to the CHP 45.36000 Green Base and 42.72000 Green Mobile. I listen to all the El Dorado County Sheriff frequencies including 159.55500 160.69500 159.82500 159.69000 460.21250 155.79000 I also listen to Placerville PD 154.96500 154.75500 I also listen to all of the Cal Fire frequencies which includes Statewide Air Plan Freq. Cal Fire Statewide Command Freq. and Cal Fire Statewide tac freq. Amador El Dorado Union dispatch Amador Command and El Dorado Command. I also listen to all the USFS frequencies. I also listen to most of the California Emergency Services Radio System (CESRS) formally OES radio freq. I was thinking about buying this one right here. http://goo.gl/4y22FS It is the Hustler Antenna with coax cable. Is this a good antenna? I really tight on money so $30 is as high as I would like to go. The freq range that I will be listening to is like 40.00000mhz to like 500.00000mhz. By the way I have a 800mhz antenna right now and it sucks real bad. I can barely get dispatch and other freq and im only like 10 miles away or a little more. Yes I was stupid and did not read that it is made for 800mhz this is the one i have right now. 800MHz Scanner Antenna : Scanner Antennas | RadioShack.com

New 380Mhz System near Bogue Field

I live across the street from USMC Bogue Field in western Carteret County...and a new system has popped up.....

CC 380.400 Mhz

it's FULL SCALE here....pegged s-meter on an inside whip antenna...stronger than my local Viper site......or about anything else too....it's either at Bogue Field or real close here in western Carteret or eastern Onslow tower site.....or i'm in it's optimum signal path.....

SID: 000Ah-1212

ARC XT PRO

I use the ARC XT PRO software with my BCD 996 XT, the issue i am having is while logging it no longer shows the UID, it shows the ID. I am monitoring the OHIO MARCS system which it has upgraded in my area to the 700mhz channels and now it no longer shows a UID number when a transmission is received, It shows the UID in my Cruiser when a unit transmits. any ideas? suggestions?

antenna / coax cable question

I recently got a outdoor antenna to improve reception

it looks like one of those old tv antennas that would go on top of your house but its made for scanners supposedly is good for 25 - 1300mhz...

It came with a 50 foot RG 6 coax cable which is 75 ohms

i have a uniden BC355n and in the owners manual it says when connecting a outdoor antenna use a 50-70 ohm coax cable i also have a old radio shack scanner which says to use a RG 8 or RG 58 50 ohm coax cable which seems to be hard to come by seems like most of the coax cables sold are RG 6

being that those 2 scanners in question are outdated is the 50 ohm just a recommendation in regards to a older setup? or will using the RG6 which is 75 ohms and not a 50 - 70 ohm cause problems?

i have been reading up on this matter and what im getting is basically the RG8 will give better reception

I briefly tested the antenna out on the BC355n and seemed to work well with no problems - audio was much clearer on all signals and frequencys that would never come in with the stock telescoping antenna came in which is what was expected

what im thinking is what they mean by the 50 - 70 ohm thing is NOT LESS THAN 50 - 70 ohm i could be wrong...

also im sorry i posted this in general i didn't realize there was a place particular for antennas/coax cables and the like... i kinda figured there was just couldn't find it

PRO-652 and Frederick County Fire

Hi! New user here. My old analog scanner finally dies and I wanted to purchase a digital unit in anticipation of Carroll County going digital and to listen to Frederick County Fire. Bought a RS PRO-652 and had no problem loading Carroll through RadioReference download. However, have tried everything to receive Frederick County without success. I can load control channel and it populates other frequencies and the scanner seems to be scanning the system as I get a SS reading. However no audio what so ever. Downloading from RadioRef also did not work. Will FC ever work with the PRO-652 or should I return it? And if so, what would be recommended replacement?

Thanks for any input/suggestions.

Headless Spectras

I probably have 12 or 14 high power spectra radios sitting in a storage shed. Mix of vhf and uhf but I don't have any heads. I'm just assuming that they are just for door stops without the heads...would that be a correct assumption?

Just Bought BCD536HP

I'm overwhelmed trying to understand how to get this scanner up and running properly. I punched in my zip code, but after an hour of listening, I still have yet to hear anything from my P25 Trunking.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

It appears the scanner loaded in all the proper trunking freqs on its own.

It's "ID Scanning", but I'm picking up NO P25.

Please help.

Building your own service bench

I don't know if a topic like this can make any traction here. Based on what I see on youtube, many of these posters are absolutely cluless what they're doing. The guys doing mods/upgrades and truck stop shops are excruciating to listen to. A glance around their benches often reveals a lot. Either they don't have necessary equipment to properly service or have equipment that's totally inappropriate and there more for eye candy to prospective clients who don't know any better.

I managed to do a very good business from around '72-'75 with a relatively small investment, but do the repairs right and unlike most cb shops of the time. I worked by day in land mobile as a tech around premium service and lab grade equipment. By night my bench wasn't lab grade, but by transfer calibration from our shops equipment to inexpensive kit and cb grade equipment, along with some home brew items, I could get precision results with them.

Time have changed and there's a lot of industrial and service surplus since the past 35 years. From ebay alone, one can assemble a pretty decent bench if you concentrate on perfromance rather then eye candy. This isn't about trying to impress anyone as above. Your work speaks volumes for itself. You don't need a fancy and overpriced DOSY lightshow when some separate, but excellent components are almost a few bucks plus shipping.

Could this be a conversation we can have here? Maybe take one piece of necessary equipment and discuss it at a time. What you need and what you think you might need are two different things. Also, some pieces of equipment are deceivingly good that go for little or nothing or have particular quirks that make them suitable or not suitable.

CMP-site deleted?

I -was- getting 5 bars from CMP's main talk channel--858.3375. Out of 5 scanners, the 1 with the best antenna still gets that trunk. ( which 858.3375 ) is in. I've run many searches in the fcc database, and do not see a trunked site at Mt. Aggy anymore.. Anyone know about it?

Scanner Friendly Vacation Spots

I am preparing a story for National Communications on the best and worst vacation destinations for scanner listeners. These will be ones that have attractions for the entire family AND great scanner listening. The top spots would most likely be analog without trunking. Or they could have very basic easy to follow trunking. Of course good solid signals and no encryption. Good easy to hear P25 like national parks is also good to list. The worst would be encryption, P25 simulcast with a beat esp Phase 2, poor signal quality, to name a few. One example of a great location is NY City. The information will then be compiled for a continually updated list in Radio Reference. Please email me with your locations. Include what makes them best or worst. Even some basic frequencies and PL's would be great. jim@otrym.org Thanks.

Help with programming BC346XTC

I never thought of myself as technologically challenged, but I received a new BC346XTC as a gift and trying to program this thing is kicking my behind! (My last scanner was back in the VHF days). I am a volunteer with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue here in the Portland, Oregon, area and would like to be able to hear what's going on.

I have tried to use the ProScan software; it does recognize the scanner and uploads "something" from Radio Reference but I truly don't understand what I'm doing and it isn't working. Is there someone out there who would be willing to email me at klauderback@comcast.net with a phone number or something and I will call if you can talk me through the basics of this? Or feel free to call my cell at 503-936-9827 but obviously I might not be near the computer or the scanner. Any help will be appreciated. I hate to be defeated by an electronic device but this thing has me feeling really stupid!

Thanks

RS manager says scanners will be illegal next year

Stopped by my local Radio Shack, curious to see if they had any digital scanners on hand and the "knowledgeable" manager says they order them for the customer. Then he tosses in, that they will be illegal next year and you have to have a license.

I asked who said that and the manager replied Radio Shack corporate. And about the type of license, he didn't know. Anyone else run into anything like this from RS?

Hi recently bought a Mac cand find any dsp software

So my dad talked me into getting a MacBook Air and for the life of me I can't find a realtime audio filter I previously used Linux for 2years and I realizize it's a non duplex soundcard and also looking into buying a scanner and don't even know were to get software if I bought one please help

ARC536 Assistance Please

Hi,

I have successfully set up the ARC536 using the USB lead that came with the scanner. All drivers are installed and serial port bps set to 115200.

When I start the Virtual control it works but is refusing to log anything. I have purchased Butel software before and know how they work but this one has stumped me. All the other functions seem to work but one thing I have noticed is the huge 'lag' when pressing buttons. Also, when in Custom search mode it does not display the frequencies scanning.

Why would this be released with some many bugs?

I would expect it from freeware but not if I'm paying 69 bucks.

Seafair

Hi all. Anyone still have the blue angels or pit frequencies for the race boats available?? I had them last year but not sure if they have changed.Thank you!!

Bcd396T freq rounded off

I like to enter 150.7975mhz. but the radio rounds it off to 150.800. Is this because it's not a legitimate frequency covered? I'm able to access it exactly thru the Public Safety search (7.5khz steps) or a Custom Search but gets rounded off once I push E to enter it.

My License

I passed my tests Field Day of '92 but my ticket says it was granted 05/08/2012; the last date I renewed it. Is this SOP? I've been on the fringe of the hobby (listening) for the last 21 years but am now able to get back into it fully. Thanks.

Still debating.

This is kind of long so people can give a better opinion of what they think would work better for me.

So I pushed back my purchase of a 436 or 536 until income tax time. My county isn't going to the new P25 system until later this year. I am waiting to figure out what they are encrypting too, they said none, then some, then maybe all of PD. Which if that's the case, I'll pass completely as I want to listen to all of public safety, and have no interest in anything else.

I bought a 396xt, because I had a BCT 15x and I hated having to unplug the antenna inside, the power cable, taken it out to the car, connect it to the power, connect it to the antenna, remote head, and put it under the seat. Then when I got to where I was going, I had to reach around under the seat and turn it off their since the remote head only turned off the remote.

396xt was good, grab and go. Perfect. Only downsides were, I didn't have a cigarette lighter adapter, I didn't buy one because bad reviews saying it messed up the scanner. I also didn't like it because hey guess what, I needed an amplified speaker for the car. Which means something else that needs a power source. I ended up returning it, because the next county over turned on their P25 Phase 2 system, and since I work on the line, I'd like to listen to that. I also have questions whether or not our county will go phase 2 later. Where I travel, they are all phase 1, and phase 2.

I want the 436 because grab and go, and hey! it plus into my car adapter I have for my iphone (or so i'm told). The only thing I'm not sure about is whether i'd need an amplified speaker or not, do I?

I want the 536 because it's a nice base scanner, it will sit on my desk alot. It will also get in the car too. I've read about the siren app, that would be nice when it comes out. It doesn't need an amplified speaker, I can plug in a normal speaker and be done (It worked perfectly that way on the 15x). If the app turned off the scanner remotely that would be great. I think I could manage taking it inside and out, maybe in a bag if it's raining.

Who here has bought the 536 and wished they bought the 436 and why? Easier to transport and move?

Who bought the 436 and wished they bought the 536 and why?

To start I can only buy one of these scanners. I can't justify buying both.

BCDx96XT Bcd-996xt programming

I am trying to program the Palmetto 800 system into a 996xt scanner I just purchased. Can some explain to me how to program this system which is a large multi-site system with many talk groups into this scanner which limits you to 20 groups per system. I also want to program certain sites and groups which are local to me. I am using Freescan.

need help finding a two way radio antenna

Hi,

I don't know much about radio technology or anything, but I need to find a permanent mount antenna for a vehicle I have. I will be purchasing a Kenwood TK-730 45 watt radio and I need an antenna to be capable of receiving and broadcasting on the 151-158 mhz frequency range. The frequencies I will be using are 151.625, 151.505, and 158.400. I don't want to get a real big antenna; only something that is small and low profile, but will have a big range. The antenna can't be magnet mount because the vehicle has a fiberglass cab and roof.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

need help!!

I moved to York, PA and I have a BCT7 scanner and a Pro94 trunking scanner. I programmed the frequencies for the York county police, but all I hear is the Lancaster county frequencies that I had when I lived in Lancaster. Is York county police on different frequencies? Also, I've been hearing a lot about digital scanners, whats the difference of digital versus my trunking scanner? Any help is greatly appreciated.

BCD396XT Group scanning with ARC-XT Pro

So let me see if i can type this up so it makes sense.

i use the database option to preload the stuff i want hear on my BCD396XT. the issue i am having is figuring out how groups work I will explain how iw ant to use this scanner which i believe is possible. with BC780XLT that used banks starting with bank 1 i would add CHP frequencies about 10 channels. than bank 2 would be local sheriff stuff that was about 8 frequencies and so forth each bank was programmed that way so for example i did not want to listen to CHP or i did not want to listen to SHERIFF i would turn off the bank by pressing the number on the keypad of the scanner. well am i able to set my scanner up this way? as i did with the 780xlt ? so far i have group 1 with FIRE, SHERIFF, LOCAL PD all in one and i do not like that because sometimes i just want to hear FIRE or LOCAL POLICE. so if someone could somewhat explain what i need to do here that would be really awesome.

Win500 Appcrash help needed :)

Ok before I get into this I will state that my OS is Server 2008 32bit, and YES WIN500 WILL (Or did) work fine with it until recently.

My Scanner is a PSR-600.

Here's what I have tried with a reboot after every step and logging on as Administrator

- Reloaded OS on machine

- Reloaded proper FTDI drivers (Per Don's webpage)

- Used another Data Cable. (I have 2)

- Loaded older FTDI drivers.

- Running as Administrator, have tried compatibility mode with all listed OS's.

- uninstalled all virus protection AND malware detection

- disabled windows firewall

- dropped back one version of the software

- verified on a win7 x64 Ultimate machine that the software download was good. (works fine)

When I open Win500 I immediately receive the attached message. I have read posts from others with the same error using other OS's yet none seem to have any true resolution posted.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance!

Scanner memory life

Hey all,

I'm using a GRE-500 and I've been thinking about something lately. My method of scanning is a likely little bizarre to most, so I tend to write to my memory more often than most do. I don't always scan - I'm not always into it. This time of year I spend most of my time outdoors and with the kids so I don't have it on all that much. The winter is when I do most my scanning, so it's not unusual for me to turn it off in March and not start it back up until November or December. Because of this, especially in my area lately, radio system upgrades and changes force me to update nearly every frequency I monitor when I "get back into it". Instead of downloading the entire RR database into my scanner, I like to set the scanner up to find talk groups that I can pick up and I look them up and enter them into Win500. Everyday for a while, I'll get a few new ones, enter them in, then write them to the scanner. (I've been too lazy to manually enter.)

So - how long can I expect to do this before I get bad memory blocks? I'm familiar with flash memory and am aware that it does have a limited life. I've been using flash drives for years and I've never had one go bad from use. I've dropped a few and had one fly out of my pack on my motorcycle before (don't ask) and that's usually bad news. I still have a 512 meg flash drive sitting right here from 2004 that still works great. I've stumbled across a couple of threads discussing this about scanner flash memory, but haven't really seen any input on what the expected life may be. I'm not sure if flash memory is just flash memory or if there's something different about the scanner memory. What's been others' experiences?

I think from now on I'll be entering manually when feasible. Just have to pull the manual out and refresh on how to do it.

Ever hear anything on Marine band?

MASTR Exec II Question

I've got a couple of mastr exec ii mobiles that I came into possession of post them being scavenged for parts. One had part of the pa removed, another was missing the control board and exciter and the third was all there full of evidence it had tried to play submarine at one time or another.

Anyway, using the two that haven't tried to play submarine I consolidated the two into one single unit to use for a repeater (amateur) conversion. However I noticed two things, the antenna relay is missing from both units as are the harmonic filters. I'm assuming that the harmonic filter needs to be present (or does it?) for the pa to properly function.

Any idea how to tell if the one in the submarine radio is salvageable?

UBCD396XT squeals, clicks and pops?

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the Australian version (with the U in front of its name) Uniden Scanner - U BCD396XT

One thing I've noticed in lots of the reviews I've read about the American non-U version (the BCD396XT) is people saying there's a lot of horrible DSP noise noticeable when using headphones.

If I do get this scanner, I'll be using headphones a lot.

So I'm hoping those of you who own the Australian UBCD396XT can tell me if it's an issue with this model, or if it's been fixed in the Australian version? Or, if it isn't fixed, is it really as bad/annoying as some posts seem to suggest?

Many thanks.

I thought that searching for close by transmissions was an option for this scanner. Apparently not ??

What is 33cm good for?

FIrst, let me say the topic question isn't meant disparagingly. Everyone has their favourite bands to operate on, but I think our amateur spectrum is a "use it or lose it" proposition, so I want to use as much of it as I can.

I've never used 33cm (900Mhz band) for anything, but it's right there, available to use. I have a good grasp on the utility of the other VHF/UHF bands, propagation-wise. In a forest environment I'd use 6m, in open terrain I'd use 2m, in an urban environment I use 70cm for its better penetration of structures and its tendency to reflect off many structures. 1.25m has an advantage in a lower noise floor and is a good compromise between 2m and 70cm. (these are mostly with regards to FM voice; I know 440 is also used for ATV and higher-speed data because of the available bandwidth)

But what about 33cm? At 900MHz, foliage absorption begins to be a factor, and my body more readily absorbs RF energy. This is countered somewhat by the smaller physical dimensions of higher-gain antennas; I can have a 5/8 wave on my HT and a 3dB gain colinear on my car without taking up any more space than a lower-frequency quarter-wave or helical antenna.

Most public safety systems seem to have moved to 700/800/900MHz, and I always assumed that was due to greater channel availablity on those bands, but is there a task or situation that high-UHF wavelengths are particularly suited to?

So glad I chose MURS.

After 3 months of off and on searching work, I bumped into this very in-depth FAQ with answers to many questions on MURS. There are rules that tell you what kind of radio you can use if you cannot find an authorizes mobile unit made with an FCC ID for the band. It has to be pre a certain date and other stuff. The thing I like about this FAQ is that there are part 95 rule numbers next to almost everything the document says. No guessing or speculating. I love it :)

MURS: Frequently Asked Questions (and yes, it'ss on Darth Vaders List in his Sticky. It's also the easiest to read and understand, so I'm repeating the link).

Then check out the hyperlinks at the bottom of the page for GMRS and other FAQ's

Next:

I was wondering if anyone here knows if there were ANY mobile units made with a MURS application in mind. I cannot find a mobile radio with an FCC ID listed. Maybe someone has a manufacturer's list? I know that there are people that have *amazing* knowledge and resources on such things :)

I have talked to a few truckers that have heard of and are interested in MURS, but it seems to be something that never got off the ground. If no mobiles were made, it would be kinda hard to sell it to the public. I read in the FCC hearings that Tandy had allot to say against MURS in the beginning and I'm sure it's never been sold in his stores. Maybe that's why it never took off... Radio shack had such an influence on C.B.'s for the poor man.

So far I have bought a couple of MURS outfits. At the house I use 2 electric eyes and a base station so the miss can hear anyone entering the front or back yards. I also have an electric eye and an HT with me in the truck. It's the cheapest way to have a "PageAlert" style alarm without having to "wire" the truck. I just set up the alarm transmitter in the sleeper, pointing at the center floor. Anyone gets into the truck is going to step to the floor as soon as they turn sideways: *Alert Zone One" hehe. I can hear someone getting into my cab from a restaurant a mile or two away if I decide to go that far. From the truck stop restaurant, I can be at the cab in 30 seconds! Even if they see the alarm box and take it apart, I have already received the instant alert. I'll be at the cab about the time they take the batteries out.

If you don't want to confront your robbers, you can warn them off with a audio yelper, the base has a hook up for wires to a siren. When it receives the alarm code, the relay will sound the alarm for a You just leave the base unit somewhere in the cab and it will receive the same radio alarm you get on your HT. It's radio, anyone on your channel within 2 miles will hear it lol.

As for a base station at the house, I have a small magnet mount VHF antenna on the swamp cooler for the moment. The metal top cooler in the center of the roof makes for a nice ground plane. I'll get a 30' tower soon. I am using the Dakota Alert for a base & I'm looking for a compatible external mic to plug in.

The above FAQ also explains all the "Data" rules. And another radio website had a ton of ideas for the data usage for remote things. They have a VHF MURS Channel Data Radio Modem for your computer???

I'm not endorsing the site okay, but here it is so you can go get ideas...

Narrow Band VHF Data Radio | MURS Channel Data Radios ... The top left box has links to

"Solutions by Industry" Smart Grid, Oil and Gas Telemetry, Remote Irrigation, Utilities Management, Weather Monitoring and a few things I've never heard of!

Think of the "green" and other possibilities. If you used some of the commercial applications around the house, you could control many things remotely with one computer.

I think MURS needs to be built up and brought back to life. It's the best comparable substitute for the CB; power and distance wise.. Id like to see mobile unit made. Of course using the HT with a magnet mount antenna will work, but what a pain in the butt. You have to zip the coax and power wires together making it kinda stiff. The MURS base radios are ridicules for a mobile application, though they are fine for your motor home out on the dry lake bed to call the troops to dinner. You can use one of those tall RV flag poles to get height and get out further. Also better to receive a distress call from someone in the ditch on his dirt bike several miles out in the desert. A big advantage over FRS HT's sitting on a picnic table.

P25 ARMER Questions

I should start out by saying that I am definitely a novice.

I've noticed a few things and developed questions because of those observations.

1.) Is the ARMER system a giant blanket of coverage? As an example, if a radio in a talk group half way across the state attempts to reach other radios in the talk group, must those radios be within range of the same site, or does ARMER provide a means for that information to be relayed to other sites where the rest of the talk group is present.

2.) I noticed that some sites are assigned various frequencies. For example the site near my residence has seven assigned frequencies. One is the primary control channel, and another is the secondary control channel. What are the other five for? Are these seven listed frequencies the frequencies upon which communication is actually taking place, or are these frequencies just used for the sake of letting the radios know which frequencies to switch over to in order to communicate?

3.) I pulled the FCC license for my county, in which the ARMER site resides... and the frequencies in the FCC listing don't match the frequencies for the ARMER site on the Radio Reference database. 1800 units were assigned frequencies in 300 unit blocks, for a total of six frequency blocks, and then six more frequencies were assigned to six individual repeaters... are these repeaters considered to be the ARMER "site" or is the site a single location, and the repeaters are acting in another capacity.

4.) Do the frequencies assigned to the 1800 handsets split into 6 blocks of frequencies get used for actually transmitting voice data, or do these frequencies just get used to communicate to the site, and then the site tells the radio which frequency to transmit over?

I've been looking everywhere for a really good overview of the state ARMER system, but so far I am just left with more questions than answers.

I'd really appreciate any help someone can offer making sense of this system.

Thanks,

Jared.

Turning on all Quick Keys in a system (Sentinel)

Has anyone found a way to select (turn on) all the quick keys in a system in Sentinel without stepping through all 100 of them and turning them on?

I see that when importing a system from the database, they are all on by default, but when building a system, they are all off.

I tried CTL-A to select them all, but that was ignored. There's gotta be a better way!

Any sense in searching LE anymore ?

I'm an old school scannist.

First radio was a Pro 34 that I got for airshows, I saw a guy using one and knew I had to have one. Got the scanner the day before the show when there is plenty of activity with arrivals and practice .... Put the batteries in, fired it up and waited to catch all the comms.

To my utter disappointment I didn't hear a thing, sat there half an hour with not a peep. Figured the unit must be defective so I took it to a local radio shack and told him the unit was fried.

He said Ok, so its not receiving, are you sure you got the right freqs entered ? This was something that never entered my mind, I thought you turned it on and it started picking up whatever was being broadcast.

Felt pretty foolish, I bought a police call book which had a few of the main freqs of the airbase I was at, and I finally started receiving and I was a happy camper - Happy until I ran into a guy picking up traffic that I wasn't, when I asked him if I could have his freqs he said sure, then said hold on.

Your radio can't receive them, they are in the 220-400 military aviation band.

So shortly thereafter I had a Fairmate HP-2000, which was pretty much an AOR 1000 clone. Back in them days there were very few scanners which could receive this band and they were expensive, $700 or so I paid for mine.

Got a Pro 2006 which I heavily modified [still have it], put up a discone on a mast on my roof [still there] and of course I started getting into other areas of scanning like police, ems ect. Back then before the internet, if you wanted to find freqs you got police call magazine, and/or you searched for them yourself.

Was a thrill of the chase type thing for me, and I found many discrete freqs in use not listed.

Once trunking came along I started to lose interest, and when things went digital I was lost, stopped scanning for years [except for airshows]. Talkgroups, unit ids ect are all greek to me, never took the time to learn. Digital scanners databases can be updated with the click of a button ... So since I'm starting to get into LE scanning again, is there any purpose searching for possible new freqs ?

GMRS/FRS/MURS Texting Devices

What devices are currently available that allow texting? I recall that the discontinued TriSquare devices had a texting mode. I have read that Garmin RINO radios will do it. Also, the Motorola DTR410/550/650 will. Are there others? What about Nextel Direct Talk? Is there any way to make them text unit to unit? Is the range for texting the same as voice?

West University Place fire

Loud Buzz end of Transmission

I have a 996XT and when listening to Redondo Beach there is a loud buzz at the end of the transmission. Sometimes this buzz will last for up to 2 to 3 seconds. Other stations don’t have this loud buzz only the usual noise that comes with un-keying a microphone. I’m wondering if this buzz is unique to the Redondo beach radio system and I just need to learn to live with it or is there a setting on the radio I can set to eliminate the buzz.

Thank you.

Don't force signal role bank programmable Uniden models into manual mode.

EDACS extended options value was mangled.

Voice role with chase checked was changing park frequency on tuner event.

Fixed deemphasis bug (not set at startup).

Include LCN in channel passed to remote DLL (was zero).

SSB confusion

This is a long winded question so please bear with me...

I am finally getting a chance to remodel/rewire my basement radio shack. I have always wanted to add a base station style CB radio and I think now is a great time to do so. My previous experience with CB radio has been just a mobile unit in my truck and talking locally, but I have noticed some CB radios with SSB. I have no experience with SSB. I assume SSB is for extending your range, such as for DXing, which I have no experience with.

Older analog, base station CB radios (with SSB) range from $50-$150 on the internet. I've also came across a new mobile CB radio with SSB (Uniden Bearcat 980) for about $130. Would my money be better spent on an older base station style or a newer, mobile style CB radio? My goal is to reach out further than my zip code on the legal 4 watts, by having a CB with more or better options, regardless if it is old or new.

I currently have a Starduster M400 antenna ran to my shack with 100' of RG8X for whichever route I decide to take.

Noob programming question of UV-5RA

Hi guys, i am fairly new to this and i am really excited to join the hobby. I figure i start with the basic Baofeng UV-5RA. Now here is my question. I downloaded the frequencies into my radio using Chirp and a RadioReference db (i have premium). So i know that offset for frequencies are set automatically however it seems that when i transmit no one can hear me on any of the programmed frequencies that i tried.

Does it mean i am far from the repeater? Or do i have to also program the input frequency as well separately? I also read that a tone needs to be transmitted sometimes in order for the repeater to activate.. (holding ptt + band button.. which i also tried and that didn't work)

Thank you so much for your help and giving the nudge in the right direction

Indiana University Campus Bus Freqs?

Hello all,

I just purchased a Uniden BCD396XT with the intention of listening to various radio traffic in the Bloomington area, primarily. I work for IU Campus Bus Service. I know that we switched to digital radios (handheld units are Motorola XPR 6550s) about four years ago. Bloomington Transit (the city bus service) is still using analog technologies. I can pick up their traffic just fine, although their channels are labeled as IU Campus Bus on RR. Does anyone know the info on the "real" IU Campus Bus frequencies and/or how to extract this data from one of the handheld radios to which I have access to at work?

Thanks for your help.

Streaming Software with Noise Suppression?

I'm looking for streaming software with built in noise suppression. Our local trunk system has a lot of background static (not my scanner or antenna) and I'd like to tone it down some. I've used Zello to listen on my phone and that worked nicely. Looking for something similar but to stream to Broadcastify.

Tk5710 Version 3 Firmware Programming

Im stumped, trying to update firmware on a 5710 version 3. Its the first V3 I have played with. I can get it into firmware program mode but it does not show the baud rate just says "firmware" on the screen. If I hit pf4 button it changes nothing which on V2 radios will scroll through the baud rates. Anybody know if there is something different on the V3's?
