EF Johnson 5100 (VHF) w/ Motorola PMAD4094A Antenna

I've been trying to decide on a VHF stubby antenna that I liked for use on my EFJ 5100 portable. I've been using one of the Motorola Wideband antennas on it since I got it, and while that antenna performs well (as I'm sure those who use them will testify), to me is just to cumbersome for the day to day use. I'm used to using a stubby antenna on my 800 portable and with our recent system upgrades on the VHF side I don't need the bigger antenna.

I looked and came finally settled on the Motorola PMAD4094A. It's usually marketed with the TRBO line. It's advertised/listed coverage range is 147-160 MHz which will suit me just fine. The only thing I listen to over 160 is the NOAA weather radio stations which are RX only. I did "kerchunk" a few ham machines on 2 meters and didn't notice any degradation in performance. The antenna itself is a bit "fatter" than it looked in the picture but it doesn't make it any more cumbersome or uncomfortable on the belt. Of course the wideband will stay in my collection for the times it may be needed, especially since I spend a fair amount of time in the NC mountains.

The last thing I will touch on is how well it seats into the antenna connector on the radio itself. The Motorola wideband antenna seems to be the popular choice among users of this series radio I think mainly because of having full coverage of the VHF Hi range & how well the antenna performs from one end to the other. The biggest complaint however is that once the antenna is screwed down and seated into the radios antenna jack the skirt on the antenna isn't quite long enough and leaves the barrel of the antenna exposed, thus allowing debris and such to get in there. The barrel on the PMAD4094 is a bit shorter and this allows the antenna to seat all the way down onto the radio itself. I think the antenna looks great on it. So if you're considering a VHF stubby for your EFJ 51xx line, or another line I wouldn't hesitate to buy this antenna again. I'm attaching 2 pics....... One of an overall shot of the radio and antenna, and a closeup of the antenna and top of the radio. Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions you may have !!!!

*** I forgot to mention that I ordered this antenna from Wiscomm this past Friday at 4pm. I got an email 15 minutes later that it had been shipped & it was in my mailbox this afternoon. Total after shipping was just over $14. I'll definitely do business with them again in the future!! ***

Home Patrol on its way

I live in Indiana, I am told the Home Patrol is really the only game in town.

Last night I finally caught one on Amazon refurbished for a price I would pay.

So its suppose to be on its way! Should be here next week.

I am pretty rural, but most of the listening we are interested in would be in a 20 mile radius.

Will I need an out door antenna? We are in hilly southern Indiana.

If I need an outdoor antenna; what and where to get it?

Thanks

SLCC PD

Hey all, random question:

I hear the UHP units at SLCC come up on the UHP/SL Co TG, .but never on the SLCCPD TGs. Are the two SLCC PD talkgroups (HEX ID 56c and 56e) used still?

surveillance frequencies

Any one know the surveillance frequencies used by AZ State, PHX PD and Maricopa County? I am sure they run encryption on the RWC or other local trunking systems but they probably have a few simplex channels that they operate on when conducting business away from RWC coverage. Have noticed that AZ state have statewide authorization on the repeater inputs and outputs. Based on that they could conduct surveillances on repeater input channels that are not paired with a local repeater. Could be way off on this.

I have heard PDs conduct surveillances on city wide paging systems. No one would listen to that racket all day, a perfect place to hide. Radios used by the officers had PL on the receive side to minimize receiving pager traffic.

Actually know a PD that uses a commercial trunking system and another one whose narcotic officers use a pig farm channel for surveillance, not kidding.

Some PDs have blown the dust off their old low band radios and actually conduct surveillances on old 30 to 50 MHz radios which they still have licenses for.

Others operate on school bus frequencies, DPW and local maintenance channels at night so locating the channels the PDs use for surveillance can be challenging.

If anyone is aware of frequencies used by PHX PD, Maricopa County or AZ State could you share them with me?

Bergen County TRS/Pro-96

This has probably been answered somewhere, and if so, I apologize but didn't find answers in my search. When I program the Bergen County Trunked Radio system (set for "MOT" and 9600 bps) and can see the agency names on the display but can't hear anything. I know law enforcement is encrypted, but I'm not having any luck receiving Fire, EMS, etc. Any help is appreciated.

VX-820 Series-Scan blinking light "Green"

Does anyone know how to disable the green blinking light when the unit is in either a scan mode or a grp scan mode? I am using a VX-824 VHF unit. Searched the VSOL website and the RSS and could not find an answer. All it indicated was that when the radio was in the scan or group scan mode, the green light will be blinking. (actually driving me insane and wasting my battery).

Thanks in advance!

Upload attachment function not working

I have no problem posting messages, but when I try to upload an attachment, the upload window times out while waiting for a response from the RR server. I have tried multiple times with two different browsers.

Paper weights?

I recently inherited 2 TrunkTracker IV's, I dont have the exact model numbers as I'm not at home at the moment, but one has a silver face and the other has a gray face. I live in the Austin Texas metro area and have been reading about the GATRRS system, by which all 32 of the areas public safety systems operate encrypted.

My question, is what can I do with these scanners now? They wont received the encrypted transmissions (unless I'm missing something), I have a plethora of ham radios so I don't need them for scanning ham bands, and I don't live close enough to any airports to monitor air traffic.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

BCD536HP quick key bug

BCD536HP v1.03.03

Going to try and explain this the best I can so that it can be tested on others. There is a bug with the quick key settings possibly with scanner or Sentinel.

In P25 standard

one department with 4 talkgroups

setting up with 2 sites on different quick keys

Example site 1 QK 98 threshold manual

site 2 QK 99 threshold auto

turn QK 98 off (no checkmark) Site 2 on. When scanning and hold on talkgroup still using 98 manual. You must delete site completely.

Double checked with same results using Sentinel.

Oh Come on! Where's the Icons!

Well decided on ACARSD and it works but one problem is....planespotting.net is gone and the only photo source is airliners.net. How can I set ACARSD to download photos from airliners.net? planespotting.net is where acarsd used to get photos from. I have updated the databases in the menus. It's working with this for output:

NO AIRPLANE ICONS!

UPDATE:

Best advise for myself (and if anyone else does what I do) is stop panicking and look harder to solve a problem. I did some googling and it turned up a forum elsewhere that said its a plugin that changes the image server and now I have 4 to choose from. It's located in the extracted archive. All 3 need to be copied over to the c:\acard\plugins folder. Then load them in ACARSD menu and change server. It'll work as long as there is a matching image. Here is the real outcome:

The plug in is called "Use different picture database as iconserver V1.12b" Written by KJM acarsd@acarsd.org.

The jetphotos.com database crashes acarsd.

Kenwood TH-D72A problems

I purchased a new TH-D72A and it's a beautiful radio. Full of features, but it was supposed to be all set up for Toronto, Ontario but when my friend tried to use it, all that came out of the repeaters was static. It's a mobile radio, and it is programmable by using the MCP-4A software. I have reset this radio a few times and we still couldn't get it to work. I don't suppose someone has experience with this radio or a Kenwood MCP file that I could upload into the radio ? I am getting my licence at the end of July (if I pass the exam) and I would love to be able to use the radio. Right now I have to get my friend over who is licenced and I am starting to feel that I am starting to get on his nerves. He keeps coming over to try and get it working. Either that or it's my cooking, but I highly doubt that. If anyone has any idea's could you please send them my way ?

Thank you very much for your time

436HP 1st Road Trip

My first trip with my new 436 was quite an adventure. No, I haven't bought the GPS yet, but I loaded the radio with a favorite list.

The first thing I noticed is making sure you have the QKs right before getting in the car. If you don't & get the number out of sequence, it makes it difficult because you are seeing counties that won't go away and the ones you do are incorrect on the screen.

I have also noticed it would be optimal to have a car with better road noise insulation since my Nissan Versa is noisy. So, I started looking to see if they made an amplified 3.5 mm earphone, single. I found one, but I don't know if it would work. Since I can no longer hook this into my Kenwood stereo Mp3 input, this seems a better option. I'm sure at my age, old-headbanger, that my hair cells in my ear are almost flat.

Here is what I found: Headphones and Earphones for Personal Listening Systems : Personal Listening System Accessories

Now, for the other issue, the difficulty finding how to turn off/on systems & departments while driving. I had a few swerves in traffic attempting to change this. GPS will likely take care of this.

I'm also considering buying a magnified screen and lens to position in front of the display because it is hard to see, small print.

I love this radio. In a multi-site system, it rocks. I've not figured out how to toggle between sites when they've been assigned a QK.

Onward through the fog.

PRO-93

Hi all-

I have the RadioShack Pro-93 which has severed me well for over 10 years. Unfortunately the LCD screen has stopped working (the backlight still works but the the digital readout is blank). I went to radio shack and was originally told I could order a replacement screen for $50, but then was told only the antenna and battery charger component could be ordered. I have tried resetting but not initatilizing (forgive the spelling).

I also have the RadioShack USB Scanner/PC (04A08/ 20-047) cable. I don't have the CD anymore for this, its been a while but I also downloaded a program (win93 I thin). When I tried connecting the scanner to the computer I always get a com port error and can never transfer the data.

I have a predicament now in that i pretty much know the channels (and know the frequencies) so although its a challenge the scanner is still usable. If I try re-initializing then i'll loose all the data and if that does not fix the LCD screen then the scanner will be useless.

My computer is running Vista operating system. Unfortunately I had to do a recovery on it (all the electronics are failing). When I connect the usb scanner wire to the computer (and the scanner), nothing happens.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This "old" scanner has done me well and I don't want to replace it unless absolutely necessar.

PRO-95 Scanner Cast Audio VERY Low

Hey everyone. I'm setting up a stream using my old RS PRO-95. I'm running it from the headphone jack straight into the microphone input of my laptop. Unfortunately, the audio even when cranked is very low. I've tried adjusting volume on the mic in line and scanner with no luck. Cranking the volume also creates a lot of hiss.

I'm wondering what ground loop isolator people recommend for the PRO-95. I'm also wondering if I need an amplifier or something to raise audio levels. Any suggestions?

Pride Parade today

Hearing CPD on CW 6, CFD on Citywide fire, Joint ops, and EMS command. But what surprised me was the old VHF main freq of 154.13 in use. This is being used between the unified command van 2-7-9, and the fire alarm office. Why is the old VFH frequency being used? It is fun to the old CFD VHF in use again.

I improved my audio a little by simply adding a 22 mf capacitor in series with a speaker leg. It reduced some of the lower frequency noise. Info here. Car Audio - Speaker Crossover Chart and Capacitance vs. Frequency Calculator(High-pass)

Newbie scanners? Need help!

Hi!!

I'm new here! I decide to join the forum because I am tired of using my phone's scanner app and want to purchase a real scanner finally. I live in downtown Portland, ME. Cumberland County.

Any help or advice on what kind of scanner I should buy would be great! Don't want to break the bank at first but I keep hearing on here about digital vs analog talk. I feel like I'm swimming in the deep end of the pool with only one arm floaty! :)

My ultimate goal is: to hear Public Safety (but I believe their feed if offline?) I can get Cumberland County/Portland Fire and EMS, just not the PD.

I can't put up any antennas cause I'm in an apartment. Any help or direction on this would be great, since I'm a tard in this subject! Lol

Thanks!

Uniden bc125 question please

Never had a scanner before. We live in a area of Vista, California and am often kept awake with copters overhead and sirens all around us. Bought the scanner mainly to listen to local sheriff and CHP transmissions.

Now I can build a house and even program a DVD player....but this scanner has me so confused. I have read through the instructions and have tried to run multiple search scans but all I am picking up is CB talk. Any ideas on how I can skip to police/sheriff scans only? Thank you for any info you may have

Cumberland co nc p25?

Its looks like cumberland county nc has switched to p25. I have programed it in to my scanner but i;m not hearing anything. I listen to county fire and it looks like there's only one talk group for county fire. Is anyone else listening to cumberland county nc?

New speaker/amp-new problem with CB

I have a 2014 CanAm Spyder with factory radio and cb. I just installed an amp and higher power speakers. The radio is great but now when I key the mike I get feed back sound coming from the speakers.

I tried turning the radio right down to off (its never really off as it also runs the com) but no luck.

This proprietary CB came off of my last Spyder and when first installed I had one helmet that need chokes to cut the same thing. This time chokes do not work on headset so not sure how to isolate the problem. It gets worse when I move toward the speakers but I am surrounded by them so no solution there.

Any help is appreciated

Tulsa County Oklahoma Live Audio Feeds??

BC125AT new user; search finds nothing at all

I'm new to this so maybe I'm making a basic error somewhere. I bought a Uniden BC125AT. I screwed on the included antenna, and turned it on. I hit Search, and it ran through everything across all 9 banks, and found (stopped at) only 1 place, with some noise and clicking. I live in a pretty crowded part of the country (suburb of Boston) - surely there's a lot of transmissions going on - what am I doing wrong that it doesn't find anything??

Also, when I hit "scan", it says "All channels locked out" - don't know if that's related?

SDRanywhere client-server on Android !

Hi,

Finally a real nice portable solution to enjoy your (RFSpace) SDR:

SDRanywhere

I tried the Android app and it works very smoothly and stable.

Good demodulation, agc and filters all nicely controlled by touch/tap and gestures.

Audio codecs sound good and spectrum/waterfall has adequate detail, combined with very low data rates.

On an Android screen the waterfall is really crisp.

It is kind of basic.

But I like basic tools that work really well.

It is multi platform, the server runs on windows but the client side may be on MacOSX, Windows, Linux and Android. The client does not need port forwarding so you can access your SDR on almost any platform from *anywhere* via the internet as the name says. The low data rate also makes it very stable.

Nice addition: the server is able to control several wideband receivers to tune along as a frontend to the SDR. In this way you can combine your DC-to-daylight receiver with an SDR user interface, and control it remotely with your Android device.

Interesting!

Question Regarding Ameco TPA

Can someone give a quick review of this gizmo? I know it isn't much, but does it work? Does it work $80.00 worth? Was thinking about trying it with a DX-400.

EDIT: After reading around the forums, here is more info.

Planning to use it (like I say) with a DX-400 and a YB-400. Maybe play with my F6A a bit. :)

More interested in it as a tuner than as an amplifier. Does this thing still tune when the power is off?

I have a wire, I think it is around 47 feet, sloping from my upper bedroom window down to a shed. I'd probably plug it into that. I also have an ANT-60 and a Yo-Yo Tenna I might want to try it on.

Let's figure this out.

Okay this should seem fairly straight forward. I aim to have a clear understanding across the board the difference between Oklahoma City Site 1 Core Simulcast Layer and Site 2 Wide Area Simulcast Layer. Open discussion on the topic on what evryone thinks it is and to establish exactly what it is. This can be beneficial to new people into the hobby listening in Oklahoma City.

My best guess, based on having two signal radios loaded into UniTrunker and 1 voice radio listening to both (3-RTL 2832U R820T). As I watch and compare both site windows I notice the exact same activity on both maybe 1 or 2 on occasion might differ from the other. The voice radio seems to switch off between both Sites alternating when like the Will Rogers TG appears. (CPU SPIKES!!). Then I turn off one of the signal radios and just monitor one signal radio with the voice radio listening. This works when a talk group is on hold as well on the preview version.

So my ultimate guess (perhaps wrong will find out) is that Wide Area is meant to be exactly what the name implies. Wide area coverage. Redundancy? Link use also? Why does Oklahoma City have two sites doing the same thing?

These are only guesses and questions. What can we ascertain?

UniTrunker Display Mode Question

I was sitting here looking through the options menu and I saw it before but never really had to set it. The EDACS Display modes shown are hexadecimal (EB 91 E4) decimal (000210) and Fleet. Are these just how Unitrunker displays it or is it a proprietary display it detects? OR Are these modes optional to pick for a more optimal way of displaying talk groups and such? I do not know so I have to ask so I know. Thanks.

Linux Flavor for EDACS and RTL2832 R820T

I like the Antergos ArchLinux distro and I know dsd+ can run on it. I am also searching for a trunking program that works with 2 or 3 RTL2832 R820T dongle's so I can have fun listening when I boot into Linux. I cannot find this sort of trunking program. Is there a PPA with a program similar to UniTrunker for Linux?

(Thinking ahead...SDRTRunk does not document having a EDACS decoder.)

Up-to-date Freescan file for Henn.Cty for the BCD396XT

I'm planning to buy a Uniden BCD396XT plus a USB cable and use Freescan software to manage it.

I live in St. Louis Park and wonder if anyone would be willing to share a current Freescan file for the Hennepin County area. The newest file I could find by searching the forum was dated back in 2012. I'm thinking things may have changed a bit in the last two years and hope someone might be able help out.

Thanks much,

NXDN compatible with Yaesu Fusion

I do not know if this has been asked before or tested but is NXDN FDMA 12.5khz voice compatible with Yaesu Fusion voice? (Yes...I know it is in Analog...ha ha ha).

In reading I think that it might be possible but the only thing would be how the RAN codes in NXDN (1-63) relate to the digital codes that Fusion (1-1??) has.

I am presenting something this month as a start to knowing which digital mode should be pursed. Sadly each has it's own positives and negatives so user beware.

If anyone has tried and had success it would be great to know. Thanks in advance.

Thinking of going Yaesu

My mission, locate receiver under $500--must have am fm nbfm wbfm-, looking for reception down into kHz and up as close to 3000 MHz as possible. After a long amount of research, rooting around ICOM, AOR, GRUNDIG, SONY and countless others, the VR5000 looks to have the most bang for my limited buck. I have read much regarding the front end filter problems, I am willing to risk it. If anyone knows of an item that gives as much as the Yaesu, for so little, let me know, I'm listening. Thank You

Fairfax County Fire Station 42

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue will fully staff Station 42 beginning on July 1 2014. The new units coming on line will be Medic 442 and Tanker 442. Tanker 442 will be new and will not replace Tanker 439 as once thought. Like all FFX County fire stations 42 will be staffed 24/7 with a career crew now numbering 8 (I think) which would include the EMS supervisor. I am happy they found the funds to make this happen.

Metro Drill

An FYI..

An emergency exercise for the new Metro Silver Line is planned for Sunday morning, June 29 at the Spring Hill Station. The drill will involve rescuing passengers from an elevated train. Departments from around the area are expected to participate since this is a good opportunity. Expect a lot of radio traffic for this event.

Issue with Motorola xts5000

Just a quick question for you experts with radio technology.

I work in law enforcement, and our issued radio is the motorola xts5000. Our department never gave us mics for them, so we had to buy our own. I purchased an off brand mic from Amazon, for roughly 35-40 dollars. It does not say motorola anywhere on the mic. Ever since I've bought it, my radio has issues keying up inside of the vehicle. It constantly gives me a bonk. The radio seems to work better outside of the car, but still has some issues getting a good signal.

Are all of these problems because I bought an off brand mic???

X36 Service Types

I did a few searches to see if this was already talked about and sure it has been brought up in the past. But I could not find it.

So when you create a favorites list, you still need to turn "on" the service types so the scanner will listen for them? While this is a very simple process, when I change and do a location based scan instead of a favorites while on the road, I have to turn off the "business" group as an example or I will receive all of the business freqs/systems in that area.

I would have thought that anything on your favorite list would scan no matter what the service type is set to.

This very well could be a misunderstanding that it is on my part.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

396xt programming

I recently just bought this scanner, and with some help from others here, i,m just not grasping this. So i,m looking for some place or company in the buffalo area that does programming...i called hirschs, and they want a minium of 85 dollars, and i,ll choose what i want and we will go from there, after spending to get it...that price seems a bit high. I tried you tube videos, but where ever there from dont necessarly apply here, and i downloaded freescan, but i dont know the differences between all these frequencys and which bank to throw them into. thnxs in advance for any help provided.

Citizen's Energy EDACS... OFFLINED

No CC at all on the old EDACS, and I copied a couple of P25 transmissions on one of the licensed freqs, so apparently, the conversion is rolling along on the IDPS System 2 while the other sites are redone to P25.... I Hope they let IDPS system 2 roll on the Citizen's sites as that will make coverage 100% better for it, and will kill any and all simulcast issues for me as I am less than a mile from one of the Citizen's sites. I will keep you all updated as to new TG discoveries, and when the other sites come online as P25.

Newby with First Scanner

Hello all

First of all I must say that I live in the UK,so I presume it's OK for me to join?

Ok,I have a Bearcat UBC125XLT and a Watson 881 Supergainer Antenna.

I live in a village in the country, but I get a lot of Aircraft on approach into Manchester

And a lot overflying the UK en route to other destinations.

The antenna is not pulling manystations,so today I made a temporary antenna out of a length of TV coax and ran it out of the window.

The difference is amazing,so if I want to make this a more permanent antenna, what cable would be the best?

I can't have a roof mounted antenna but a loft antenna is possible.

Thanks

NEW Bedford Mass special event this week.

The Charles W. Morgan will be visiting New Bedford through July 6th. I've heard testing on UTac 42 and 8Tac 94. Also the New Bedford citywide interop frequency on 452.4500 DPL 2t43. Should be for interesting listening

What's it like, 25 years later?

I got a Novice license around 1974 and a General license around 1976 (can't remember the exact year). I was reasonably active on CW around 1978-1980, and worked something like 40 states with a 5-watt Heathkit HW-8 and a random length antenna (which was about all I could afford). I never really had very good SSB equipment (a cranky Galaxy V), and the bands seemed so crowded that I really wasn't all that successful with SSB. Eventually, I got busy with my career and family, and the old ham equipment has been sitting in boxes in the garage for 25 years or so.

I never did let my license lapse, though, it is still active.

I think about getting out the old equipment from time to time, but I am wondering....

Thinking about the HF bands....how is ham radio different now than 25 years ago? I know the transceiver technology has progressed a little since the days of my HW-8 and Galaxy V, but what I really mean is....how busy are the HF bands compared to 25 years ago? Fewer hams, less busy? Does anyone do CW any more?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

talkgroup and id's

when a new talk group comes up the target label is just blank is it possible to make it when a new talk group comes up it puts in the id say "TG46608" and when a new user comes up on that talk group it makes the user label "eG46608" if encrypted or "G46608" if not encrypted.

New guy saying hello

Hello to all. My name is Jim and I joined in April of last year so I thought it was about time for me to jump in here to introduce myself.

I'm a casual scanner listener and have been for a few years now. I have a Pro-96 and a Pro-84. I live in the Shelby Co. Tennessee area and listen to Memphis and Shelby Co. Trunked System, Air Traffic Control, and some others.

Been reading since I joined and have learned quite a bit from the experience and knowledge of others on here. Eyes and ears open, mouth shut. :)

Thanks for having me and y'all take care.

2. When press SRCH button it scans different preset ranges like HAM, Aviation, Railroads etc sometimes i get into mode where i have to click up/down arrow to switch to next frequency (like when you press TUNE), but normally its searching automatically and up/down arrow just sets direction.

How do i switch between auto and manual mode for SRCH menu?

3. I got stock antenna and live in apartment where i hardly get any phone signal, not sure if this is problem though as it shows full bar most almost full bar most of the time when i listening to some channel.

Problem is that when listening sometimes speech cuts off in middle of someone speaking for very short period like half second and then resumes.

Also at the end of transmission sort of like half second second before person stops talking and releases button.

Possible idea can it be related to welch knob setting or fact that radio is in SCAN mode?

Pro96 Re-banding South East Ohio

I have a pro96 and Win96 V01.74 As I understand it I should be able to use my pro account and download from RR the sites and groups I want and my scanner should work with rebinding. Well it's not so I did some research and found where in Win96 you set the 800mhz channels to re-banded. Well that's not working either.

So I'm lost, should it be this hard i use to use this site and would simply select the sites I wanted uploaded them to the scanner and it worked. What am i missing?

BCD436HP TDMA(dual slot)

will this code scanner decode TDMA phase 2? Will it to decode the correct talkgroup if it falls on and already active slot. What I mean is if there's a talkgroup active on one slot of a specific frequenc, will it recognize them properly decode another talk group activation on that second slot. Better yet will it be code for talk groups simultaneously if the system was completely active. By this I mean if every talk group on the system had traffic at the same time what it properly decode all talk groups.

better question I have a PSR 800 is this worth buying to replace that spoty scanner when it comes to simulcast systems

Fire Marshal offering grants for MARCS radios

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- The Ohio State Fire Marshal's office has $3 million in grant money to help small and volunteer fire departments get on to Ohio's statewide radio system.

"It's earmarked for MARCS radios and the user fees for MARCS radios," said Fire Marshal Larry Flowers.

MARCS, which stands for Multi-Agency Radio Communications System, is operated by the state and allows users to talk across the state on a network of repeaters. It also makes it easier for different departments to cross-talk at a scene. Each radio costs $20 a month in subscription fees to be on the system. That includes every portable unit as well. Those fees can add up.

"There's a lot of communities that have the MARCS radios but they don't have the means to pay the user fees, so they can use the grant for user fees," he said.

Flowers says the $3 million allocated in Gov. John Kasich's mid-budget review won't meet all the needs, but it will at least help them find out how large the demand for the radios is. Departments will need to apply for the grants through the State Fire Marshal's office.

Uniden HP1 VHF High Band Dead?

For some reason I lost all sensitivity on my vhf high systems for my HP1. While the upper bands and p25 decoding are normal, could it be possible that 1 band could go defunct. By the way, VHF Hi Aircraft seems to be fine.

There are no new sources of desensitizing since even my weather band channels are static full but somewhat audible.

The kicker is I just got it back from Uniden Repair and they found nothing wrong but apparently only talked about testing with a p25 system.

Called Uniden back but cannot get anyone in repair.

Would there be a firmware fix?

BCD536HP Programming Help!

I'm not new to programming radios but trunking and scanning is getting the best of me. I have a BCD536HP that is only scanning two favorite lists, one trunk one conventional. I understand that mixed scanning isn't 100% effective but at this point I cannot get the scanner to pickup almost any of the conventional channels.

I've included hpe files.. basically I just want to scan the new Mercer County NJ P25 trunk system and the old VHF conventional. The scanner spends most of its time on the trunk system, every so often the conventional police channel will break thru.

Any help is appreaciated.

Need Help with Alabama State-wide EDACS (Troopers, etc..)

I am going to be in Covington County near Andalusia for a few months. I was hoping someone could please help me with the frequencies, LCN, and some talk groups? I know there are active sites there, I heard them while scanning the 800 mhz band, but I was just doing an upper/lower limit search, so I have no idea what all of the frequencies / LCN for programming into my scanner would be. It is not necessary, but I would be super grateful if someone also had the talk groups and alpha tags for them in the areas of Covington, Conecuh, Butler, Coffee, Crenshaw, Escambia, and Pike Counties. I can not find any data listed on those counties for the AL DPS (Troopers), but I can hear them on 800 mhz by doing a limit search, they just did not talk enough for me to get but 2 frequencies, as i was passing through and it was fairly quiet that time of night.

Thank you in advance for any help at all.

Icom 2820 Issue

Hello fellow radio enthusiasts. I just recently purchased a used IC-2820h dual band transceiver from a friend. He bought it brand new several years ago and never had a problem with it until a few months before I bought it, the radio would not transmit. It still receives local frequencies just fine, but will not transmit anything. The antenna he had was a crappy magnet mount that was actually broken about halfway up the whip where the center load coil is at. Would this be the most likely reason why it receives fine but won't transmit? Or would it be something in the mic? The buttons on the microphone work fine.. or is it in the actual radio? I am ordering a new dual band antenna soon, since I dont have one. The radio is just sitting in my house for now. Any insight you guys might ave would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Johns Creek: what happens when someone is bored

So, while Johns Creek is racing to move ahead with the new Unified Radio System buildout, several sites are slated to be built out. One of those key sites requires a 400 foot tower to be constructed.

This site will not only support the URS equipment and antennas, but is also required for the new Fulton county DTRS as it will be a key site to cover the northern most part of the county for both voice and microwave path.

Naturally no one except people like me would welcome a tower like this. But it's something else to go on a one person rampage and putting up a website full of complete, total guano like this person:

Stop the 400 Foot Tower in Johns Creek

Look mouth breather, it's needed. You want JCPD to be able to have coverage in and around your McMansion when some burglar breaks in? They need their radios to work. Your SUV is on fire and you're entrapped? You want FD and Rural Metro to be able to get that call and have reliable communications on the fireground.

Here's an idea: stick to what you know, which is gossiping on Facebook and Twitter and watching "Welcome to Sweetie Pies" on OWN. Leave the public safety radio engineering to professionals.

Using TV cable for scanners?

Forgive me if this has already been discussed. Tapatalk gave me zero search results. Can a person use regular TV coaxial cable to feed multiple scanners? What would the drawbacks be? You see tons of TV coax around and plenty of splitters for far less than communications grade stuff. What I would ideally like to to is split my discone to 6 or 8 scanners. I could use TV coax jumpers to connect the scanners via adapters at the ends. What are your thoughts?

BCD436HP Interruption while writing to scanner Box saying " XXX system different on unit" ???

Hey everybody, I get this box popping up when writing to scanner advising a FL name in Sentinel is different from what is stored in scanner. There are three "remedy" option boxes below. - #1 "Copy and replace in scanner" - #2 "Copy with new name" - #3 "Skip". At the bottom is a check box which gives the option to do the above choice for all conflicts. I've gone through and realigned all favorites lists so they're all the same in scanner and software but still get this pop up box. Excuse if this has been dealt with already on this forum, but I cannot find it. Thanks in advance, TT. PS When the box pops up I check the bottom resolve for all then Box #1 Copy and replace in scanner.

External Audio Jack BCD536

I have seen several forums on audio issues, but I do not believe this is my issue...I have audio.

When I plug into the external speaker jack in the back, my audio is almost inaudible. I have the jack like halfway in now and I have better volume.

I saw something about mono rather than stero, but I did not think that mattered on the jack, do I need a different audio cable?

This cable I used for a while no issues on my BCD996XT.

If I use headset jack in the front to my Dell PC, it pops, which is definitely not a good deal.

BCD536HP Windows XP / ProScan

Hello all,

I did some general forums searches so hopefully this has not been covered.

I have my new BCD536HP scanner and I wanted to set it up on Proscan however, my Desktop (windows XP) does not seem to find the serial port software.

I used the disk to do the install of SW, thinking that might be the problem, however when in Serial Port mode it has the Yellow Question Mark.

This is USB to Serial, but as long as I have a driver I should be OK.

The question is, can I get this done on XP? I use the XP units for my scanners and until now have not seen any issues.

Thoughts / suggestions?

Thanks,

unmute encrypted P25 audio

Hey guys, I wanted to ask how I can unmute encrypted P25 traffic from my radio. Now before I continue, I am in no way trying to decrypt encrypted traffic whatsoever! I would just like to hear the sound of the traffic, not decrypt, listen in and go to jail. In my county, we only have one agency that encrypts their traffic ( I hope it stays that way!!!) I didnt know they started to encrypt until I finally ordered CPS through /\/\ to start programming more frequencies through my PC instead of FPP...which is a nice feature when your on the move constantly but programming is so much more easier when you have a full size keyboard and a mouse!!!!! anyway, when I programmed the radio for all the frequencies in my county. I noticed that on dispatch of this specific city, I would see the RF signal meter pop up but no audio, so I pressed the monitor button and then the encrypted audio popped up and encryption icon popped up. In a way, I liked hearing the traffic but the only way I can listen is if I pay attention to the RF meter and press the monitor button.

I have looked around the other posts here and other sites, and from what I understand, if I set the squelch to digital CSQ, any digital audio should unmute, including encrypted traffic. I have already tried this on my radio, but still no luck on the radio unmuting to encrypted traffic. The only time I hear the dispatch is if a unit accidentally forget to turn on the encryption...this probably happens maybe twice a day. I'm thinking that I don't hear unmuted encrypted traffic, is that I am probably too far away...since I am listening from another city after all, in the same token, I've heard audio surprisingly good from other cities further away but then there's a possibility that they have a tower set up on top of the mountain.

The radio in question that I am using is a XTS 4000 UHF, with CPS R20

anyway, I would appreciate any advice or suggestions at this point.

Need advice about digital scanners

Hi everyone! I've been out of the scanner hobby for about 10 years, and still own a 30 channel Uniden portable, and a 10 channel portable from RadioShack. I still hear things on the frequencies I've always used.

Now, I was just at Radioshack a couple days ago and was surprised they don't have any scanners there. I asked about it and was told they only sell them online now. Hmmm. I was also told that our area has gone over to digital. That's funny, since all the analog channels are still active. I also googled the frequencies for my area and don't see anything new. So what's with all this digital stuff? Are digital and analog being used side by side or something?

Jag 725M Remote Issue

So!

Iv had a remote mount Jaguar 725M with a systems head mounted in the car for a while. Took it out to update some programming. Have another remote mount inside the house so just took the radio itself from the car, connected it to the setup in the house, programmed the radio and put it back in the car.

Problem

When i turn the radio on now i can hear the speaker make a pop type sound as if the radio just powered up (did this befor too) but the display dont turn on and i cant get the radio to go into program mode at all via the rear remote mount cable. When i take the remote mount and put it directly onto the radio as a front mount the display works. Tried 3 different remote mount cables and 2 system / 1 scan head and nothing when its connected as a remote setup.

What could cause this? Im unable to program the radio for somereason now. Only changes made were a few talk groups no other settings. The remote setup works with my Orion and did work with this radio.. but now it only works as a front mount setup

Also.. Does anyone know of a place i can order a front mount faceplate for the orions? Just need the "mounting bracket" the control head attaches to, for a front mount setup

Bcd396t- bcd436hp

I own the 396T and it works fine. Thanks to FreeSCAN and RadioReference data base. But I was about to buy BCD436HP scanner. I have been reading throughout the forum to get a handle on the 436. Now I'm gun shy about getting it. Seems complicated. I do like the feature of the zip code entries. A few questions I have. Might sound dumb but..

1. What is the first thing that you do in regard to turning on the scanner ?

2. Sentinal software is it installed from the scanner itself or from a cd ?

3. What data base is used to update and program using this software ?

4. I have read and saw a video on setting the distance on the scanner sounded ok when the distance was 20 or 30 miles, but one had recommended that the distance could be set at 0 miles and set-up with the zip code. I think that's what I understood.

5. I regards to question one do you plug in the usb cable to the scanner and computer for the first time and

then turn the scanner on ? Or turn the scanner on by itself and do an initial set-up as far as date, time, and

zip code ?

The 436HP seems vastly different then the 396T. The more I read about the 436 and what some had posted, especially those that where having difficulty's in using the 436 is making me a little hesitant about taking the plunge.

MSP Frequencies For Framingham Area- But No Scanner ?

Hello,

Tried to figure this out myself, but find it confusing.

What would be the most likely MSP frequencies to pick up with a radio that has

vhf/uhf capability, but is Not a scanner ?

I guess about the best I could do is to sit on one frequency for a while.

Any chance at all of hearting any MSP conversations, or must I absolutely have a Scanner with Trunking and CC capabilities to do so ?

Rutland County State (EMS) Dispatch PL Change

FYI,

Note the database change to the PL for the Rutland County EMS Dispatch Frequency. The PL has been changed due to adjacent state interference.

Why haven't they sourced a new Dongle?

So we all know the app is delayed. Why hasn't Uniden moved on and sourced a new dongle and gotten about the business of solving the problem? It would seem (and I could always be wrong, dead wrong), that they have an awful long time with very little result. Are they stuck in the "we almost have it" loop? Maybe they do, but sometimes you don't and you have to move on.

Also, are us 536HP owners going to see this radio soon replaced? I notice for the last 2+ months the radio "out of stock" on Uniden's website. OK, recall for speaker problems. But come on. we are going on a quarter year+ with low or no stock on their own website. That doesn't sound very healthy to me.

Something is not right with the signs we are seeing here. Maybe it has to do with agreements, contracts, exclusivity agreements, foreign governments etc but when things just don't seem right, there's always a reason. I don't believe for one second that the folks at Uniden responsible for solving these problems just don't care and that's why its taking so long. I think there are other more complicated reasons involved.

Unfortunately the end result is, they are destroying their reputation, hurting their sales both of which will be their downfall. You know, when I go to their web page and see all that monitoring gear I start to think about the grand days of X10 when that crap was splashed all over the place. Uniden, you don't want to go there.

Fix your problems, fix your dongle, release your application, fix your sound quality on your 536HP line. OR get on with replacing it with something that works and we'll get over it. Otherwise prepare to be relegated to obscurity for your blunders. Consumers talk with their wallets. Let none of us ever forget that.

There, that felt good. Not I can go about browsing the internets for other new digital scanners. I wanted to love my 536HP. I did love my 536HP, then I turned my 536HP on and well, I've been falling out of love ever since.

BCD536HP Virtual control in ARC536HP PRO full version.

Hello All.

I was Live Chatting to someone at ScannerMaster and they pasted a link to instructions for Windows 7 users so that we can use the virtual control in ARC536HP PRO Full, but I seem to be having trouble with the instructions (neurological constipation on my part). If anyone could paste the link to the instructions Id really appreciate it. I mistakenly closed the window.

Thanks Sheldon.

OCNJ Frequencies...A bit of confusion.

I've started a few OCNJ threads a while back (I don't mean to come off as annoying for keep bring the subject back up) but I was doing some research and have a few questions. I know that:

154.445 - Fire and EMS Dispatch & Response

153.845 - Fire Operations (Listed as Base/Mobile, unsure if that is correct.)

151.115 - OCNJ Beach Batrol

460.350 - OCPD (PD on Atlantic County's Provoice/un-monitorable. Unknown if still in use for anything.)

BUT...

I go into the Atlantic County DB and I see a list of Ocean City Talkgroups with what looks to be, correct info for an advanced scanner to handle Some digital, some analog. My main thing is, the other analog frequencies. Such as additional Fire/Beach Patrol. Are they VHF or 800Mhz Analog?

And on another similar note, I see a listing for Atlantic County P25 System. Any news on that?

Thanks to anyone for any answers/assistance!!! :)

BCDx36HP department/site quick key bug?

I am running 1.02.07 and haven't upgraded so this might actually be fixed (maybe someone can confirm):

I added a conventional frequency via the radio keypad.

When adding it, I created a new conventional system and assigned a system QK of 0 and the radio advised me that QK is already in use (I knew that and it's ok - it's a trunked system - I want this conventional frequency to be enabled when the system is enabled.).

For more completeness:

The FL QK value is 0

The system QK is 0

The sites are in the QK range 0-35

The departments are in the QK range 49-65

I created a department inside that system and assigned it an unused QK (44).

When I start scanning, I find that:

(a) all of the sites and departments instantly got enabled (not what I wanted to have happen)

(b) when I attempt to disable selected sites and departments the radio always tells me I just turned the site/department "ON" (repeating the same input always returns "ON") *EXCEPT*....

(c) the conventional department QK (44) properly toggles with the words "ON" and "OFF"

(d) sometimes the site/department is actually being turned off (even though the radio's response is that I turned it "ON") but I think it sometimes ignores my request to turn "OFF"

Can anyone confirm this was fixed in the later firmware?

If not (or not known), can someone try a test on the new firmware and report your findings?

I'll give it a try on my 536 (current firmware) and see what happens.

programing in 70cm simplex freq

I am programing my Kenwood TK-840 and would like to know what bracket of freq from what to what would be right for simplex only operation. I don't want to interfere with other operations like satellite and or repeaters..

And don't want to make it to over complicated and input more freq then I need to.

I am on "http://ift.tt/1wA88GU; and there is no defined simplex bracket of freq like there is on 2 meters

432.10 to 432.30 / 432.40 to 433.00 in 25 kHz steps? I also see 446.000mhz using 446.000 as the center calling freq what would be the lowest freq to highest freq? some thing like 445.125 to (446.000) to 446.875

Noob repeater question

Okay, so I'm generally pretty technically-minded (97% on my Basics exam), and I've been reading about programming and using repeaters with my HT (since I'm heading into the bush this weekend)... but one thing in particular I'm not sure on: when I hook up to a repeater, can I *only* communicate with someone else who's monitoring/scanning that repeater's frequencies? Or do they (some?) also provide a way to "dial out" on a different frequency?

Be gentle with me, I AM a fast learner, but there's a whole new world of stuff here I'm wrapping my head around :)

BC125AT vs BCD536HP

Ok, I know some of you probably were like wtf when comparing these two models. However, here is what my problem is.

I had the 536 in my truck since it came out. After some tweaking it worked great. I am in the process of taking stuff out including my scanner, as I am looking for a new vehicle. I Put the 125 in as a temp scanner and have noticed a significant amount of interference on certain frequencies. I have mainly noticed it on the 33.88, 33.80 and similar frequencies but also on some VHF. I never had any interference, static, on theses frequencies on the 536. I am using the same mobile antenna. I had the 536 power buy cig plug and the 125 is off the batteries but also I have it plugged into a usb charger that plugged into a cig lighter. I have tried adjusting the squelch in the 125 with no effect. Any ideas?

Need Help getting started - B396XT

Hi there,

I must be really stupid.

I have the above scanner which I just bought. It was never used so it came preloaded with the quick keys that came out of the factory.

I followed the Uniden start guide where it said in order switch from one quick key to another you simply do F - .no - XX (where XX is the number of the pre-programmed quick key ou want to go to).

No matter how many times I try this process, I can't switch from the default (Alaska) to ANY other set.

I read the "easier to read manual" that's online too, and it doesn't tell you how to switch from one to another.

I don't have the software yet, and I really don't want to start programming it with software until I figure out this basic step.

Sorry for such a basic question, but I really can't figure this out.

Thanks in advance for putting up with me,

John.

Structure fire @ Mt. Weather - Clarke County FireOps 3 ??

Clarke county patched the Loudoun TAC channel through on "Clarke County FireOps3" - I only have paging, ops1 and ops2 programmed for Clarke County and that's all the db shows. Anyone who can update the Clarke db page w/ the fireops3 channel info? Thanks!

Summerfest Freq's

Does anyone know if Summerfest is still using their 800 system or if they have switched? I am not hearing anything on their 800's, but can hear Milwaukee Co just fine. I was wondering if they switched to something else, or its just not repeated very well. (I live on the Racine/Milwaukee border).

radio usage in Puget Sound

I enjoyed listening to the VTS channel for all the vessel traffic, but lately I have heard almost nothing. Has there been a change in way it's transmitted?

Thank You,

BCD996T No audio thru speaker issue

I recently purchased a very gently used BCD996T ...I have audio from the front port for head phones but no audio out put from either the internal speaker or aux. speaker jack. The previous owner used the scanner to feed RR and at some point may have gone in and silenced the exterior speaker in the program- he is not not sure. Last up dated aprox. a year ago as I understand. I did test it using the weather radio feature and I was receiving a good, strong signal just only able to hear it thru the headphone jack. I did do a re-set as well (2-9-hold) with no luck .... need to know what to do.....

BCD536HP Stuoid question.

Hi All.

Stupid question but howdo I manually put the BCD536HP in Serial Mode via the keypad on the scanner?

Thanks Sheldon.

VX-4600 Scan Issue

I have a new VX-4600 (VHF) with firmware 1.23 loaded from the factory. No matter what settings I run, I cannot get the darn radio to revert to the last busy channel after stopping on a scan. If I hit the P1 button (programmed for scan) while stopped on an active channel, it reverts back to the initial channel, not the last busy. This happens in normal or group scan. I am not using priority scan.

Am I expecting too much? On my Moto CDM1250 and PM400, if I toggle the scan off on an active channel, it STAYS on that channel, which is what I want the VX-4600 to do as well.

Does anyone have any insight into this? I am considering upgrading the firmware but it won't work with the aftermarket USB cable I have. I think I'll need to order the OEM cable(s) - FIF12 and CT104.

Thanks,

Dave
