Dallas County Sheriff

I've heard nothing on DSO's primary channel 5 lately. It sounds like they moved all their ops to channel 11. Does anybody listen to DSO routinely? They have a lot of channels;I'm familiar with the list ob RR, but where does the bulk of their activity occur?

BCD396XT Antenna question

Antennacraft ST2 or RS Model: 20-176? I monitor P25 450-460 and analog 154-159. which would you guys recommend? I have a 35 foot tower to put it on..

BCD396XT External Speaker.

So I just got my 396xt. I am looking for a speaker.

Does it matter if it is amplified or not? I don't like it to be loud. Just enough that I can hear it. 95% of the time it will be inside here on my desk. Other times just in the car.

I had this speaker for the BCT 15X and it was GREAT for me both inside and in the car.

Roadpro 2.75" External Speaker

I don't think it matters that it isn't amplified, I just want to make sure.

BCD436HP Another BCD436HP Review

Well I've had my bcd436hp for about a month now so I thought I'd post my thoughts

on this scanner. I sold a 396t and a homepatrol to fund the purchase and I couldn't

be happier. Reception is great, on Motorola 800 MHz trunked systems as well as

VHF high and low (local FD and highway patrol). Audio is good, no complaints.

I really like new features like different color alert LED, I use blue for local sheriff,

red for fire dept, green for CHP, magenta for ambulance, etc.

Programming with Sentinel software is great, started off from day one with favorite

lists for my area. Set avoids, delay times, alert led color, etc. and send it to scanner.

I like the ability to edit text tags, some are too long to view in display or I just want to

identify it my way. No problems with software or sd card.

I conducted my own non-professional antenna tests. I compared the original antenna

to the Radio Shack 800 MHz antenna, the Radio Shack 20-006 center loaded telescoping antenna along with a couple of my ham radio HT antennas, the Diamond

RH77CA ( dual band with receive up 900 MHz ) and the Diamond SRH320A (tri band with

receive up to 900 MHz ).

The original antenna was ok, not too bad actually but the RS 800 MHz antenna was noticeably better on 800 MHz trunked reception as well as VHF high. The Diamond SRH

320A was pretty close to the RS 800 MHz on 800MHz and noticeably better on VHF low but unfortunately mine has an SMA connector and when tigtened down was about 1/16"

away from the case of the radio. Seemes too risky for breakage if scanner falls over.

The Diamond RH77CA worked well on 800 MHz, maybe not quite as well as RS 800MHz

but worked the best so far on VHF high and low. This is important to me since local Cal Fire is on VHF high and CHP ( highway patrol ) is on VHF low. So all around the RH77CA

performed the best. It's 16.5" tall though so it does make the scanner a bit unwieldly, have to be careful and a little tall if you want to carry the scanner on your belt.

The RS 20-006 was hands down the best all around, this has been the case on other scanners I've had. Really makes my 436hp shine, especially on VHF high and low and right there if not a little better for 800 MHz trunked. But as anyone who's had one of these knows it's 26,5" tall and is not really usable on a belt and I always have to be aware when using it. But for $15 it's a good antenna to have. I've had 2 of them for years and have yet to have an accident. Your mileage may vary, these are my own results in my area with no test equipment other than my ears.

Is there anything I miss or wish for with the BCD436HP? Sure, multi colored display and

maybe a couple of other minor things but all things considered I really like this scanner and am glad I bought it. Homepatrol was nice for me but it's only a table top scanner. I like hand held scanners, use it on a table if I like but grab it and go if I want to. In my opinion Uniden has got a good product here, just hope the analyze feature comes soon and adds to an already good product.

Thanks,

Four Weeks Unitl Field Day

It is almost here -- the "Contest" of all contests (which in it's self is a non contest contest). Who all will be operating at a Field Day site, and what is your exchange going to be. This year, the Raytown Amateur Radio Club -- K0GQ, a top rated operation (with the exception on last year), has the privilege and honor of operating a special event station at the National World War One Museum , located at Liberty Memorial, in Kansas City, Missouri under the special event call of WW1USA. We will be operating at 2A, MO. While we are excited about this, we do have some "reservations" because the museum see's it only as a "special event station", while we see it as being more of a field day operation. Please pass the word to everyone, and everyone try and get us. Our GOTA station (which I will be a coach for a few hours) will be the Club Call K0GQ. The Special Event Station WW1USA will also operate before and after field day hours, so we will continue to be on the air after field day ends. All stations who contact the event will receive a QSO card if one is sent to them.

So who is "excited" about Field Day 2014? And who all is going to operate? I might try a few at home if I get a chance, but I will not submit a log.

Kenwood TM-281A Discriminator Aduio

Hello all,

I'm trying to find out if anyone know a good location in a 281 to get raw, unchanged audio.

My end application is to connect to a TNC. Right now I'm using the speaker audio with the speaker desoldered. I would LIKE to be able to reconnect the front panel speaker and use it for VA. So having the TNC getting raw audio and the speaker reconnected would be amazing.

Thanks in advance!

Anchorage Police feed down since 5/31 4 am

Sometime between 3 and 4 AM the feed went silent. Normally, when the feed is down none of the Iphone apps "work", i.e., an error message displays, the status here on RadioReference/Broadcastify is "offline" and the apps show zero listeners. This time, it looks like the feed is up/working, it displays as 'on line" here on Broadcastify, my Iphone apps show that there are 20 or 30 listeners (changing from time to time, the same as when it is working), but there is no sound at all. Haven't had a dispatch audible for over 13 hours. Other listeners who post on Facebook have the same problem, so it is not my phone or computer, definitely an outage or problem of some sort from the source. I assume it started with a power outage due to the high winds/storms last night. Power has been restored all over town, I believe. One Facebook poster said he's contacted APD about this and they are looking into it. This thread is for those who don't use Facebook, in case you might have or need information about this.

BCD536HP can't lock on P25 control channel

I apologize if this is an issue discussed previously; I couldn't find a thread on this particular type of issue.

I am trying to monitor the Richardson, TX P25 system with an outdoor discone and a 536HP. The system is imported from RR.

The scanner seems to have difficulty reading data from the control channel. The "DAT" indicator flickers intermittently on 852.2500Mhz. Much of the time it refuses to lock on the actual control channel and will continue searching all of the programmed frequencies for this site to try to find a usable control channel. This is all despite the fact that when it *does* briefly lock on this frequency, it gets 5 bars.

Occasionally it will lock long enough and read enough data from the control channel to know to tune into an active talkgroup and decode the voice data. The P25 voice decode is crystal clear every time. The control channel seems to be the problem.

On the same antenna, my 396XT can lock on the control channel on this system with no issues.

This is extremely frustrating as I bought the 536HP so (among other reasons) that I could decode the Plano, TX (PAWM) P25 system better. The 396XT is terrible on this system where I live, but the 536HP can decode that system almost flawlessly.

BCD436HP Browsing database on radio

Is it possible to browse the database on the radio and assign a system to a favorites list? The only way I know of is to scan based on zip, then created a favorites list based on that. But the resulting favorites list is pretty large and takes a while to delete everything except the one system I want to keep.

BCD436HP some intresting notes on this scanner :).

Well, i`ve now had my BCD436HP for a goodly while now (snagged it at Dayton), and for the most part i like this unit :). Display is nice & big, much easier on the eyes IMO, like the look of the scanner, looks a bit more "modern" if ya will, than my older `396XT does (i like that one too, that`s why i`m not sellin` it yet :D), Now that said, i have a question, has anyone else noticed that when you`re monitoring a P25 trunk system the unit has problems staying "locked" onto the control channel? Tested this against my `396XT just now and noticed that that unit had no problems locking on and staying locked on c-channel, the `436HP had problems, symptoms of this are, DAT indicator goes on & off on the display along with the signal indication going from full signal to no signal, which tells me the unit has "lost lock" on the c-channel then regained it (think a light switch being turned on and off quickly here). Is this something others have noticed or is this a function of mabey RFI here in the building i`m in? Right now just putting out a feeler to see what others are noticing/thinking on this. Thanx! coax cable , but not RG6?

I tried to google this stuff and got nowhere, but I have been given a length of cable that has the name Alcatel on it, and the letters BSW , can't figure out what it is. A friend found this at a yard sale and thought I could use it. There's maybe 75' or so, has yellow ooze coming out of the ends, like flooded rg6, but it isn't that. Has the 'feet' markings on the coax jacket, and I cut into it with a knife to see what I could find. I hit a layer of spiral-wound copper, and quit cutting. Anybody familiar with what this might be? I don't think it will be any use to me at all.

Freescan and 396xt

So I'm playing around with my 396xt. I have it connected to freescan. Set up virtual control. So I can log and record. I have the stero cable plugged into the headphone jack and the microphone jack on my PC.

It shows up in the recording setup. It shows up in windows and I can right click it in the windows options and listen to it through the PC speakers. It shows as recording and it makes the files. But when I play them back, it's silent. But shows for the exact seconds it recorded for.

CAN-US forces question

While monitoring 11.232 USB today caught OTIS 83 call Trenton Military for a radio check, Trenton answered , but OTIS 83 did not reply . Then Trenton proceeded (several times) to ask what sector are you in, and do you see any landmarks. Trenton then ,asked are you in sector 5 OTIS 83 ,still no reply. Then REBEL 39 asked for a radio check , and got it from Trenton , I never heard REBEL 39 again either. Now I know the OTIS call signs are C130s, and the REBEL call sign is either an F15, F16, or F22 (must be a popular one), according to the lists I have. My questions, is this normal?? Anyone know if their might be some type of exercise? And should I even post this type of information? Thanks for any help, Mike

BC785D Programming for P25 Phase-1

Can anyone help me Program my Uniden BC785D Scanner for Craven Co (New Bern, NC)

I am a long time subscriber but somewhat new to posting on RR so please bare with me. I hope I do not break any protocols with my post here.

I have a Uniden BC785D Scanner with the Digital card installed. I am trying to program into the scanner our local P25 Phase-1 Public Safety System (For Craven County - New Bern, NC) as well as hopefully all the other agencies such as VIPER, HWY PATROL, Etc....

I have Licensed Copies of ProScan 7.1 and FreeScan 2.17 and ARC250 1.51.01, and the Free Uniden CD-Rom software that came with the Scanner and all are set-up and handshake well with the various scanners including the BC785D.

First I do not know which software is BEST to use?

I own the following Uniden Scanners, HomePatrol-1, BCD536XT, BCD396XT, BC785D.

I once long ago Programmed on my own my BC785D Scanner using ARC250 Software back before our Trucking System went Digital and it worked very well. After they went Digital I lost all my NEW Bern Public Safety System reception for years but could still hear all the other banks which were Conventional (Non-trucked, non-digital)(Analog Systems) ......So, now I am trying to "re-learn" it all again and how to properly program all my systems into EACH Scanner they way I want to.

I am starting with my Uniden BC785D Scanner.

Can anyone help me Program the Uniden BC785D Scanner for Craven Co (New Bern, NC) with Bank-1 being the P25 Phase-1 New Bern Police, and Bank-2 the next agency, etc...

BCD536HP Speaker hissing noise again

So I have been biting my tongue again for the past couple of months and have noticed more issues with the internal speaker on the bottom of the scanner and the external rear audio jack to the radio when hooking up the Uniden BC-7 speaker.

I have two BCD536HP radios. One which was the original radio that was sent back for the headphone jack issue which was fixed and now has a 3 year warranty. The other one was bought two months ago from the HAM station which was new stock.

Attached is a recording file from the radios internal speaker on low and volume adjust turned all the way down. It is a hissing and a weird noise that is generated when the speaker opens up for conversation on either a trunked system or a conventional system. This also happens on the external rear jack with a BC-7 speaker plugged into the radio too on both units.

It does not happen on the headphone jack at all on either models but does happen all the time on both units. I also, have a Uniden BCD436HP and do not have any of those issues at all on the internal speaker or the headphone jack at all.

Keep in mind I have a Uniden BCD996XT and have never experienced these issues with the headphone jack nor the external or internal speakers.

3 year warranty replacement from Uniden is 375Z38001888

New stock radio from HAM station is 375Z48000120

Using Yaesu 6X-R with channels

I bought a Yaesu 6X-R radio. I think I've bought a radio that is beyond my needs.

When I go paragliding or fishing, people want me to to put the radio on channel 1 or whatever.

I can't figure out how to do this. I looked at a maritime channel frequency chart which says:

Channel: 01

Ship transmit: 156.050

Ship receive:156.650

So my question is as a total beginner, can I use the radio to simply communicate with others on channels? How do I go about programming the channels in? What about the different transmit/receive frequency?

I appreciate any help. I should have bought a simplified radio.

DSD+ with dongle

Hello, I am running into an issue trying to decode using DSD+ with a Nooelec R820t dongle. I am using Xp and have a strong signal on a Trbo channel. When using the same computer with a tapped scanner it decodes perfect. I have my output set to virtual audio cable and the dsd input shows virtual audio cable and output my computer sound. The dsd shows its hearing the signal but all I get is ERR and the lvl jumps from 14% to 35% and sometimes 45%. Now when I open the DSD 1.6 with the trbo extension It starts to decode but only gets SLOT 1, I never see SLOT 2 show up and the decode is illegible audio. So if anyone has time to help a newbie out I would appreciate it. I also want to use the dongle to listen to P25.

Pro-18 iScan Software and Windows 8.1

Has anyone had any success uploading the frequency library from iScan to the Pro-18 on a Windows 8.1 system? I've tried on 2 different systems, and on both I get the dreaded "Program Not Responding" when it gets to about 40%. It's not a huge deal since I can update the library by removing the SD from the radio and copying the update to it directly. I didn't have any issues with Windows 7 and 8.0.

BCD396XT 396XT "close call hits" Make it stop!

So I am still getting used to my 396XT.

I got this yesterday. I used freescan to program in everything. However, today I used Close Call Auto Store to find two channels that are not in the database, and area always active. (I know they are because I use them, I just don't know the Freqs).

So anyways. I find them. I go back to scanning. Close call has it's own quick key. I turn it off because I don't want to listen to the channels it found.

Well, scanning along it stops at "Close Call Hits". It shows a freq, but no one is talking. I hit scan, and it just makes a sound and doesn't move on. It instead goes on by itself scanning after a second. How can I make this stop?

I even pressed and held Function key. And hit close call key until it says CC OFF.

ideas in the rough.. for phase ii integration..

First off i am very well an electronics enthusiast here. So before i start this half baked idea, or proposal really. Let me say i own my own electronics website for scanners, radar detectors, lidar jammers, gps/rlc detectors, and the like. So just to keep the well that would not work, or you don't know anything about electronics teenager crap to a minimum here.

Now that i have that radartracer.com part out of the way. To brass taxier we go.

Scanners. Right they are beautiful machines that let us monitor the air waves. Well what happens when a new model comes out every year with new software really the external features are virtually identical for the last ten years in high end scanners for the most part. So let's say you're sick of having to buy a new digital every 3-4 years at a price tag of nearly six hundred dollars who wouldn't be right? So here is a theory. Make a usb update flashable firmware AND protocol based digital model. This way my six hundred dollar investment isn't worth nothing when you release your apco 25 phase II software. Just a thought i mean nav alert was flashable via usb and that's digital protocol? And so is the device firmware that uniden and radio shack have offered for years. This would be a huge selling point. Then maybe charge a lot smaller price for these updates or a more expensive but realistic option for free updates for life such as gps companies as Tom Tom, Garmin, and Magellan already do.

Don't even say this protocol update isn't possible it obviously is the question is now that i put it out there how long will it take to be developed for mass production :) ??

Hopefully soon!

BCD996XT Programing P25 Frequency with a NAC??

I have looked up and down the net, in manuals, in the forums, and I can't seem to find my answer.

I was wanting to know how do you program a single (non-trunk), "conventional" style P25 frequency and add a NAC to it?

I read something about entering the frequency in a conventional system and set the audio to "digital only", but there are some state frequencies I listen to that have the same frequencies but different NAC's.

Im new to the Uniden P25 setup, Ive have moistly dealt with GRE P25 scanners.

Software Im using is FreeScan. If there is a manual way to go in and add a NAC to a P25 conventional frequency then I can do that.

Thanks.

The reports of audio levels on low band are good and loud. Any suggestions or ideas? Is there a setting in the programming that allows me to increase the mic gain? Thanks in advance.

BCD396T - Problem with Talk Group

I just recently revived my BCD396T and used ProScan to download a few LA City systems from RR into it. One of the groups is the LA City Muni system #3 (EDACS). I only download a few talk groups for experimentation, R&P, GSD, and Radio Test (all 04-nnn or 05-nnn groups). Everything works OK except that the radio keeps stopping on 03-153 (Public Works). I don't have it in my database in the first place so I'm not sure why the radio is picking it up. I am assuming that ProScan is deleting everything before it downloads the current database. I have also scanned the database (text level) to see if 03-153 somehow sneaked into it but it is not there. At the present time, the only talk groups that I have unlocked are the ranger ones and yet I still get this one PW group.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

JP

Bedford Co Question

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to figure out how to correctly program a Pro-2096 for Bedford Co and surrounding area. I know that they have a EDACS system for right now and that for that you have to program it for each LCN and then put in the talkgroups. I thought I had it programmed correctly, but my friend that I programmed it for, came back and said that he didn't hear anything. I'm using Win 96.

BCD436HP GPS antenna

So I ordered the BC-GPSK with my 436HP and wow thats a lot of wires and connectors. do they really need so many connectors?

are there any GPS antennas out there that connect directly to the 436HP?

I dont understand why it needs to go from a small round connector to a big serial connector down to the small connector at the radio. oh and why do both serial connectors have screws? kind of srupid sense you cant secure the connection.

I've noticed a lot of unmarked cars around town. They're usually black, grey, and I've seen a red one too. Chevy Impalas'. They have a antenna on the trunk, with a couple lights in the window. The officers usually wear casual clothes, carry a weapon, cuffs, and a portable radio. I know they're not DPD or State. Who are they? (Probation officers?) Sheriff? And what talkgroup would they be on? What channels would they have on their radios? Thanks.

BCD436HP and Belleville Fire

My new BCD436HP is picking up Belleville Police no problem, but it is passing by Belleville Fire Stn 1 & 2 even when there is activity.

Up until last night, Belleville Fire Stn 3 & 4 (vol. halls) was working, now, all i got was digital sounds.

Any ideas?

Nothing to Scan

I have a new BCD536HP. I've set up a favorites list in its Sentinel and

transferred it to the scanner. Range is set to 10 miles and the FL is enabled. I can scan

the full database but not the FL. It says "Nothing to scan." I've looked at the troubleshooting steps and am at a loss. What I don't understand is that I also have an HP-1 and loading the same FL (via an export to *.hpe) through its Sentinel allows me to scan the same FL I tried in the 536.

436 lack of decoding

Ok I hope this hasn't been covered..... I read a few pages and find nothing

I am new to the 436 and I ripped open box, turned it on, set zip code and away we go. Sat 436 next to my 996 to verify I was getting equal traffic. For the most part they were comparable all but P25. So I hook up my valor magnet mount from 996 to the 436, still nothing! So I went into services and verified anything that looked like law enforcement was on, still nothing......... So I take into my truck which when my 996 hooked to the antenna picks up traffic a great distance, STILL NOTHING! Am I missing something? Anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you ahead of time

VSP - Appomattox, South

I can’t seem to find a bottom line answer to this question, so I’m hoping you can help. The Virginia State Police has the state divided into divisions. In most divisions, they use two different frequencies. Is there a scanner out there that will receive Appomattox, Division Three radio traffic for the southern part of the division? I’m talking Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, Lunenburg and Prince Edward counties. I’ve been told more than once the northern half of the division can be heard. I don’t know which scanner to purchase and I don’t want to buy one that won’t receive VSP where I live. Thanks for your help!

Do you think we'll ever see....

...another new high-end (i.e., digital) scanner that does not utilize the RRDB on a microSD card?

State of analog?

Hi folks. I've recently been put in charge of my company's radio system (Motorola LTR). We've got around 80 handsets, EX600-XLS and HT1250-LS (intrinsically safe handhelds are a requirement in our environment). At the turnover meeting, our equipment/service partner informed me that we really needed to be planning to switch to a digital system in the nearish future, and speculated that within a year or two our handsets would be discontinued and difficult to find parts for.

My company is being particularly tight with the budget at the moment. The analog system serves us just fine... we really wouldn't make use of many of the bells/whistles made possible by digital systems. I'm not really looking forward to trying to convince people around here that buying an entirely new fleet of handsets is a good idea.

Does anyone have any insight on this? Is the EX600-XLS likely to be phased out soon? When it is, will it likely be difficult to find a similarly-featured intrinsically safe analog handset to replace it with? I'm just trying to get a feel for the landscape, as I'll need to get the ball rolling for budgeting pretty well in advance if I do need to upgrade.

Thanks for any comments.

UniTrunker Signal Receiver Randomly Dies

Hi,

I have two RTL2832Us in a signal/voice configuration which passes the audio to DSD+ for processing. Everything works functionality wise, but after a short period of time, the signal receiver signal strength on the site window goes all black and calls stop coming in, however in the decode section of the receiver properties it shows Protocol: "ProVoice" and Health: "100".

To get things working again, I hit the stop button, then play button, on the signal receiver, and the protocol switches to "EDACS96", Health stays at "100", and the audio starts flowing again.

I'm at a loss on this one since it works without issue until a random time period that I can't seem to determine. It's historically been between 15 minutes to a couple of hours.

Let me know if I can provide any more information to help. Thanks in advance!

Does Rocky Hill encrypt their fire channel? I tried switching the voice mode to mixed, and it kept picking up the PL instead of going to P25 voice, so it looks like it's some type of encryption.

BCD396XT 396 Battery charging question.

So today I'll be getting my 396XT,

If I DO NOT want my batteries charging in the unit. Is it safe to put the rechargeable batteries in the unit, flip the switch and let it connected to the AC charger most of the day/night and leave it on the batteries when in the car? (until I get a car power adapter).

Some places say no, some say yes.

Union County BLS / EMS Ambulance

Hello Everyone,

I was monitoring an EMS call in Roselle last night and the fire department requested a Union County Ambulance / BLS unit respond to the job, I was told by a good childhood friend that the ambulances work out of the County Police Building out of Westfield, I was monitoring the 460.1000 freq the same one used by some squads and paramedics now in Union County but did not hear a dispatch over there for a BLS ambulance, does anyone know where there dispatched from ?

Thanks

Pro-96 dead?

Somewhere in the range of a few years ago (give or take a year) the display on my pro-96 went out. If i remember right, the backlight on the keypad still worked. I kinda wrote it off, I wasnt really using it much anymore as I stopped being a volunteer firefighter and my fulltime gig had me busy. Cleaning the garage the other day I found it and decided that I would try and repair it. I guess at some point I tried to repair it because the screws were out of it...no idea where they went.

Broght it to work with me to see what I could find. Sadly now I cant get anything to work on it. I tired 2 different AC power cables as well as non-rechargeable batteries in the yellow battery holder...no backlight on the keys, no LCD, and when I messed with the squelch I got no audio.

Embedded Feeds Not Working

Disregard. All feeds are working again.

Broadcastify Players Have Red X's

In just the last 20 minutes, the feeds I was listening to via ScannerLive (Franklin County and Wake County NC) both died. I went to the Broadcastify website to see if the feeds were down and they were showing online. So I clicked on each of the players for those counties and when the players came up they had a red X on the bottom left hand side.

So I branched out and went to Johnston County and a couple of other counties and their feeds were showing as online also, but when I click on the player, a red X comes up on those as well.

Switched to another state and got the same results. Tried the app on my cell phone and the feed is not coming through there either.

Any ideas?

Merge Two Radios Using ARC500PRO

I have two scanners for which I use ARC500PRO for each. Each currently has a different trunk and talkgroups. I want to merge both radios into one which would give me two trunks and the new talkgroups all on one radio. Both trunks have custom bandplans.

After looking around, is there an easy way to do this?

I looked at the CSV export and import but it does not seem to export the custom bandplans.

BCD436HP re, sentinel software. version that came with my unit possibly incomplete or demo?

Hey there, had my `436HP for a while (got it at Dayton, really nice, and this `un does have promise :)). HOWEVER...i now have a sneaky feeling the copy of Sentinel that comes on the unit is...or may be...incomplete or a demo version. won`t go into all of what i found (many bugs/issues too numerous to mention in one post, one of which is a lack of online help and save options not working and problems with writing to the scanner). What i wanna know now is, is there a place where i could get mabey an updated version or one that is at least complete? This is starting to get odd, and i`m now thinking i should (for now anyway sadly) regelate my shiny new `436HP to a box in a closet untill such time as an update comes out for both scanner and sentinel software (might hafta consider that ARCPro that i snagged at dayton too :). Thanx for any insight, it`s defenitely appreicated :)! N9NRA

DSTAR and APRS - which way?

Hi Guys,

So here’s a question you’ve never heard before, I’ve been doing lots of reading for my next mobile rig and it’s going to be either a Icom ID- 5100A or a Kenwood TM- D710G so which one? … all over again. It seems to be a pretty popular thread and topic. (grin)

What's the easier why to go ..... buy the Icom and then make it do APRS on it or buy a Kenwood and then make it do dstar?

I do want DStar but I also want APRS so my thinking based on what I’ve read so far is, if I want DStar it’s the easiest to go with the Icom because with the Icom I can fake the APRS on the second channel with an APRS tracker device (Argent Data Tracker2 or Tracker3 or Byonics TinyTrak3 or TinyTrak4) on the D-Star radio. I’d also want messaging from my PC via the Icom to the internet as well so I’m guessing that’s done with Icom’s data cable and the low speed messaging function.

Is that correct or was the post I was reading way out of date?

With the Kenwood as the choice – I can’t do the DStar as easily right?

I figured I post here rather bug the people I know that have them and also being a newbie I'm out to lunch in my reasoning ..... I dunno, so we’ll ask the pros here ….

Cheers’

Dave

Spare parts shopping at... Goodwill???

Today I was at my local Goodwill store, and bought a 100' roll of 300 ohm antenna twinlead for a whopping $2. On previous visits I have bought various antenna and computer cables, a nice speaker, and a 12VDC / 120VAC power inverter (yes, it works). I have left my name with the staff to call me if a CB radio or "radio-looking" equipment comes through the door. It's worth an occasional visit to your local Goodwill store to see if there's something for the shack!

I wonder. What other frequencies is this heard on?

odd P 25 near Burke County?

Okay,,,,, on a Pro 197, near Asheville, I get 152.8025. Registers as P 25 w/ NAC of 190. It is received with no control channel information such as a site number, just DG P25 190. The nearest system utilizing P 25 on 152.8025, is S.T.A.R.S. out of Virginia. After three hours I can't pull in specific locations to check on Google Map. I did hear the term Burke County, and also MED Channel. Just sounds to be Law Enforcement and possibly F.D. Now to my very limited understanding, the NAC of 190 is actually in HEX, it should convert to 400 in DEC. S.T.A.R.S. has neither listed on their charts. For a brief moment a group number did show up of 496. Okay everyone, what is it?

Ohio LEERN

I know this has been discussed previously, but why does Ohio LEERN (154.935) continue to come in so weak in Southwest Ohio? I have noted this on both old and newer scanners. Is there any way to improve this reception or is there another frequency that carries these broadcasts that may be tried? Thank you.

Maxtrac 136-162, odd jumpers on logic board.

So, just to experiment with, I ordered a 2ch 25w 136-162mhz Maxtrac 5pin ($10+s&h) with plans to convert it to 16ch (I have the parts) or buy a 800mhz Maxtrac w 16pin logic board ($7+s&h) and build a 32 ch radio.

This will be the first time I'v tried this so any tips would be appreciated.

I got the 2 ch radio today, (D33MJA73A5_K came programed w ch1-142.925 csq) works good but the tuning data sticker is missing from the RF board (any ideas how to work around that?) and it won't turn off (?) seems there is a jumper soldered across pins 5 and 6 on the (J8) connector to the front panel and another from the logic board to pin 9 (again, J8). 5&6 trace to the on/off switch (why would they do that?) but I'm not sure what the other jumper is for.. (?) it traces to the mic jack.

I'v been reading up on doing this on repeater-builder.com.

Any ideas or tips??

TK-760HG keeps coming up with " Prog 576"

I am hoping someone could help.

I have a TK-760 HG VHF Radio

When i power up the radio it does 1 of 3 things

1: powers up with " Prog 576" on display

2: Powers up with channels frozen and buttons un-responsive

3: Powers up with buttons working normal, able to scroll through channels , then locks up and either freezes or goes to " Prog 576"

( Note : I have checked to see if buttons are sticking, they are not , and cleaned contacts as well)

I am pretty sure that this may need a Firmware upgrade, or at least I want to give that a try

I have the KPG-56d software and cable but do not have a good copy of the firmware.

Question 1: can i download the firmware from another radio running the same version

Question 2: Is there anywhere I can get the latest version of firmware.

Questyion 3: Will the KPG-56d Software work for upgrading the firmware .

Thank You for any help you may be able to provide.

AMR New Haven

I'd like to monitor AMR, specifically for the city of New Haven. The DB has the freq listed as lowband, but I am under the impression that is no longer used for dispatching 911 trucks in town. Are they on their VHF freq that the DB has specifically labeled as "Chair cars"?

A feature of the 436HP/536HP to consider

One of the features of new Unidens that seems to be a problem is setting of the Service types. Most often we read of someone with a new 436 or 536 who is not hearing much, and the first word out is to enable all Service types. This is important advice.

But I don't often read posts about the advantage of Service types. Especially in a radio-dense are like I live in the center of the Los Angeles basin, being able to turn on/off services is a great feature. For example, listening to the LAPD (police) and LASD (sheriff), it law dispatch is turned on, you can literally go for hours being bombarded 90% of your scanning time with nothing but dispatch stations. Go to Service, turn off Dispatch and Interop (LA Hotshots), and you will hear all kinds of Law Tac, Law Talk with a lot more of the local action on mobile and the ground.

Sure you can do this with "group" settings on the 396XT and 996XT, but it is so much simpler with the x36HPs just to turn on/off these Service groups. This is only one example, want to hear nothing but Air traffic in LA (including commercial, law enforcement, etc, just turn on Air) etc. I also own the PSR600/PRO-197 (one of each) and PRO-106. But this feature of Service types really makes those scanners kind of obsolete for me in an area like Los Angeles. Perhaps, in a more remote location, it might be different.

No, I am not a paid advertiser for Uniden, but when folks are considering what scanners to buy, this feature should be considered, especially in radio-dense areas.

Icom F4161 - scan resume problem

I have an F4161 which I have successfully programmed. It has an IDAS option installed but I am only using the radio in analog mode.

The radio will scan and will stop on a carrier. But when the carrier drops, the radio does NOT automatically restart scanning after, say, 3 seconds. I need to manually restart the scan using the programmed scan key.

I have spent hours trying different settings. I also used a default "codeplug" just in case the original had some incorrect values hidden away.

With all my other Icom radios I have never had a scan resume problem?

Any ideas?

Maybe its firmware related? The radio is running v2.9 firmware and I am using the latest v5.0 software. Maybe I should use an older software version? Or update the firmware?

Thanks

So, not many choices for digital scanners?

Basically the BCD396XTC is pretty much the only option that I can see. There is the Pro-106 but that seems to be discontinued or hard to find. In both cases accessories seem to be expensive.

I remember back in the old days with analog scanners, there were lots of options from super cheap to more expensive. Of course digital is more complex but the prices seem very high for the few options and they don't even throw in a USB cable or the software. For $400+, you can buy a full on laptop with an operating system so I don't think a USB cable/software is an unreasonable request. Further, it's not 100% clear that for that money the scanner will be future proofed for very long?

Do folks expect to see more options come out as the switch to digital continues? Any other scanners I should look at? What am I missing?

Thanks!

Getting Started BC760Xlt...

Greetings All,

I am the owner of a BC760Xlt and trying to get started with UniTrunker. Since I am very new to computer controlled radio programs, I am having difficultly getting started.

First, I am wondering what kind of programming cable to run from the Discriminator Output to the computer (And where to plug it in on the computer, for that matter). I have used ARC radio programs for many years, but since this radio is so old I am not sure what to use for cable. I tried a few of the Male to Male Audio Cables I had laying around but no luck. I take it I should be something USB based?

The second issue I am having is I noticed that on UniTrunker on the screen where you pick what radio you are using doesn't show BC760Xlt. Does that mean that mine is too old for U/T or is there a default setting for using older radios?

Source for Decent Used Scanners?

Am looking for a good source for a decent, used Trunk Tracking IV (or equivalent) scanner. Ebay seems overpriced. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tim

Heres a weird one for you.

I scan pretty much every band that scanners can get. While scanning the MURS frequencies im getting what sounds like correction dept comms on 151.820. I get them full scale. I think I am getting the Ash St. Regional lock-up facility. I know the Bristol county HOC operates on 856.3875. I thought Ash st. would also be on the 800 frequency to. I've been listening for the past couple of days trying to confirm who is using it. When they're calling each other they say Officer so and so calling another officer. Then give locations within building which also sound like corrections like rotunda and mess hall.

I'm monitoring all the Mutual Aid frequencies and will log my findings here.

ADOT HazMat SUV?

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (BREW; Opera Mini/6.0.3/27.2354; U; en) Presto/2.8.119 320X240 LG VN530)

Early this afternoon, I caught site of an ADOT SUV which had a large (10"x10"?) HazMat diamond sticker in the rear window. He was coming off the southbound 303 onto the Grand Ave access road, and I was coming up to the light to get on the southbound 303, so I only saw the vehicle in passing. It was white in color, and had a rotatable spotlight on the roof. I did catch the letters ADOT on the left side under the cargo window, and it said something else with it, but I didn't catch the whole thing.

I know DPS has HazMat units, I've heard them ID as such on the metro channels, although I don't recall ever having seen one. I've never seen, nor heard on the scanner, an ADOT HazMat unit. Has anyone else?

New Scanner Help For N. Fulton Area User

Hello, I'm looking to buy a new scanner for use in the north Fulton county area, specifically the Alpharetta/Milton area. I have found the information on this page Fulton County Trunking System, Atlanta, Georgia - Scanner Frequencies and believe this to be the most helpful as to what frequencies I need.

However, I am not sure as to what scanner I will need to monitor the Alpharetta agencies, and how I would do it.

I see there is a 5-digit "DEC" value for each channel, is this just what goes after the decimal when I program? If so, what would go before the decimal? Would it be the control group numbers at the top of the page in red?

Thanks for helping out an obvious beginner here.

Additional Notes and System Information[edit]

This is a large P25 digital radio communications network that encompasses most of the Kansas City Metropolitan area. Due to the simulcast nature of this system, simulcast digital distortion (or "choppy reception") has been a huge problem for many scanner users (especially for those of us who live in outlying or poor coverage areas). Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done to improve reception besides swapping out antennas (portable 800 MHz scanner antennas have okay results), or try moving your unit to a different location. The distortion issue seems to be more frequent in the GRE/Radio Shack units as opposed to the Uniden models. WOW !, that answers my question about poor or no reception in my location.

ARX450B

I recently purchased a new Cushcraft ARX450B . I am using it for a scanner antenna. It works great, but when it rains I can’t pick up the 450 band. It will start to pick up VHF High channels. This is the strangest thing that I have seen before. The sun comes out and I will start to receive the 450 band and loose VHF High again. I have been up on my tower checking and making sure all connections are moisture free. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Monitoring Police in Kona

First post here! I just dug out my Bearcat 210 that I bought back in the late 1970's. Yes it still works!! Found a list of police and fire frequencies and programmed them in. It seems the Fire and EMS are being received but after a few days I still haven't heard anything on the Police bands.

Are the Police using some sort of different system than they did 30 years ago that doesn't allow the scanner to pick them up? Anything I should know regarding the frequencies that would allow my old Bearcat to pick up the Police bands?

Any info would be appreciated as I have been out of the loop for a very long time!

XSD North Command and Camp Pendleton Fire

This afternoon a small vegetation fire broke out in Camp Pendleton. It didn't amount to much in the end (from what I can gather, they wound up letting it burn out as it threatened no structures). Anyway, it was interesting to me for how it was handled radio-wise.

Firstly, Camp Pendleton Fire announced it on VFIRE 21 (154.280MHz with a CTCSS of 156.7Hz) and immediately did a role call to surrounding agencies for acknowledgement! They did state that they were not requesting any assistance a this time. Maybe they've been doing this for a while but it is the first time I have noticed it. The surrounding agencies who they polled included Orange County Fire, Monte Vista (CDF San Diego County), Cleveland National Forest, NORCOM (San Diego County North County Dispatch JPA), and Perris (CDF Riverside County). The only one who did not respond was Perris.

I found this interesting and, overall, a good practice. Given the recent multi-fire incidents in north county with some on Camp Pendleton spreading into the surrounding counties, I think it is wise for Camp Pendleton (who operates primarily on their own federal P25 trunked system within the base and much of that voice traffic is encrypted, even the fire traffic) to use a nationally designated civilian VHF frequency to keep the outside agencies informed and to then poll those agencies for acknowledgment! Interestingly, they then began working the fire using a San Diego County controlled civilian frequency for command (XSD North Command) and a VFIRE frequency for tactical (VFIRE 22). I couldn't hear the tactical simplex traffic but could easily hear the XSD North Command repeater.

Now the bad - at least from my listening it appears that Camp Pendleton Fire, at least, needs to work on their VHF civilian radio channel programming and/or procedures. They repeatedly had problems communicating with the units in the field on the XSD North Command channel. The thing is - as far as I could tell, I heard all of the units calling each other but they didn't seem to hear each other much of the time. Primarily, it was "Pendleton Fire" trying to talk to the IC on scene. The on-scene unit apparently switched input tones and finally could get through but even after that it was very sporadic. I have that frequency in carrier squelch mode with CTCSS search activated. I noticed that frequently (but not always) the base ("Pendleton Fire") would transmit with a tone on the repeater output while the field unit never did. I am guessing that the system is set up like the CDF and USFS systems such that a different repeater could be activated by using the correct tone on the input. However, I could not discern a noticeable change on the repeater signal level when they did this (but it could just be different remote receivers with one primary transmitter). At one point the field unit seemed to get pretty frustrated because of the problems. By the way, the problem seemed to work both ways - sometimes it was the field unit repeatedly calling and not getting a response from the base and sometimes it was the base repeatedly calling and not getting a response from the field unit. They wound up switching back to the trunked system repeatedly because they couldn't rely on the XSD North Command repeater(s). It sounded like they repeatedly kept trying to return back to XSD North Command but it remained sporadic in terms of effectiveness.

I don't monitor the Camp Pendleton UHF trunked system much these days because it is a true P25 system and they use a lot of encryption, even on the fire talk groups. In many cases, some users are clear but the folks they are talking to are encrypted (of course the user radios are programmed to decrypt any encrypted traffic as well as pass any clear traffic so it's all transparent to the users). For me, this makes listening to this system difficult and annoying because my only P25 capable scanners are GRE types which do not mute encrypted traffic on full P25 systems (they will on mixed mode older systems like the County RCS but not on true P25 systems like what Camp Pendleton uses) so I have to hear all of the encrypted garble in order to hear the occasional clear voice traffic. In this case, Pendleton Fire (base) was always encrypted while the field units were sometimes encrypted and sometimes not.

Anyway, I have some questions concerning the XSD North Command channel system for the folks-in-the-know (Don?):

1) How extensive a network is that system composed of in terms of multiple repeaters and/or remote bases, and/or remote receivers?

2) Is any of the network hardware located on the Marine base itself or is it all located outside of the base (I assume the main stuff is likely on Palomar Mountain)?

3) Is it going to remain such that the output frequency of the repeater(s) will be either without CTCSS or with various CTCSS tones or is there some future plan to put a common tone on the output with multi-tone access on the input as is now done on the CDF and USFS repeaters?

It sounded to me, during this small incident, that Pendleton Fire was "trying" to use XSD North Command as might have been dictated by a well meaning and theoretically logical plan but kept going back to their primarily "closed" base trunked system when they couldn't reliably or consistently use the XSD North Command repeater(s).

If there really were issues (again, all I can state is how it SEEMED to me from my listening), then I can see three possible problem areas:

1) Training and familiarity with the civilian radio channel usage and/or equipment.

2) Improper programming of those frequencies and/or equipment.

3) Reliable radio coverage of the XSD North Command system within the confines of the Marine base.

All-in-all, it was interesting to hear after all of the chaos from the major recent fires. It seemed like a good effort on the part of Camp Pendleton to accommodate the outside agencies but with definite (to me based on what I heard) issues that still need ironing out.

Help Please

Not sure if this is the right place for this but after searching and sending emails this is my last resort. I bought the year subscription along with the ARC500. I try to enter the registration keys and it when I try to connect to RR it says it has expired and I need to upgrade. I have reinstalled and downloaded the software many times. I am not even sure who to contact about this. At this point I am ready for my money back. It shouldnt be this difficult. This worked fine during the demo period a few years back but now no such luck after paying for the software. So I am really not sure if it is the software or the website. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Problems With My 436HP

BCD436HP Just need some help with Sentinel, getting what i`ve entered into my scanner :).

Okay, i`ll admit i`m almost a complete noob with this scanner (BCD436HP), and the sentinel software that came with it, but i`m learning fast :). Anyway, figured out how to set up my favorites lists in sentinel, really easy i`ve found out, and now i`m ready to program all this into my `436HP. Question i have is, do i just plug my unit into my PC and click "write to scanner"? I assume that`s correct. A second question that`s related to this, can i set my scanner to just scan my favorites lists and NOT monitor the DB, or do i have to have monitoring of the DB enabled for the unit to work properly, and if i can scan just the favorites lists, how do i set that up? Thanx for any help! 73. N9NRA

Mohegan Sun Police

Now that the Mohegan Sun officially has it's own Police Department, are they using a new radio system or are they on the regular Mohegan Sun 900mhz system?

I"m looking for a teacher

I have a brand new BCD536HP which I can not even program. It is me...not the radio. The owner's manual may as well have been written in Arabic. I have been a long-time (about 40 years) Uniden customer and feel like they do not give a damn about novice users like me. Their technical support has been zero help.

I am an educated man but do not have the technical background to understand the manual. A couple of RR members have tried to help me via IM's, thank you guys, but I need face-to-face, hands on instruction. You-tube videos are not the answer either.

Is there anyone out there in the Oregon forum (I reside in Douglas County) who would be willing to sit with me long enough to at least teach me the absolute basics, such as how to program favorites lists? I will travel anywhere to solve my problem.

Many thanks.

iTunes/multiple devices sync

Ok, iTunes kind of sucks, but what is the best way to have identical music/apps on multiple idevices (ipods/iphones).

I want to be able to check music in one place and have it on all the devices. I do not want to have to go in an check the same music for each device if possible, which looks like I have to do..

APRS antenna options

As some of you know I just got into APRS receiving, and I'm looking for better reception. Digipeaters do help out greatly with receiving signals, but I want better reception that what the RadioShack collapsible antenna can offer. And to throw a slight curve ball, I'd like to receive the ISS when it makes its periodic flyovers. This thread probably should be in the DIY antenna section, I'm not oppose to either buying or making my antenna.

A 1/4 wave ground plane would probably be my best option if I didn't want to catch the ISS. But I'm thinking a 1/2 wave dipole would be more suitable for ISS and ground transmissions. Or I could get a Diamond NR22L or a Larson dual band. What are your opinions and thoughts?

As I said before, I dont mind making antennas (I prefer it actually, its more fun). The antenna will be mounted on a 40-60ft tower.

Spectra A4 head with an XTL2500??

Hello Everyone!

I have a very neatly installed Spectra A4 control head mounted in the center console of my car, and because of the rebanding I was able to swap a few of my old Spectras out for a new XTL2500.

My question is, can I utilize the Spectra A4 control head that I have mounted with the new XTL2500 brick?

If so, what will I need in order to do so?

Note: My XTL2500 is a remote mount configuration, so I do have all of the cables necessary to remotely install and mount the XTL2500.

Thanks in advance to all that reply!!

Minitor VI SV

I have a Minitor VI Stored Voice (SV) and every time I get alerted my pager only stores about a second of squelch only and then stops recording. I have attempted adjusted the settings to store 60 seconds of audio, 120 seconds of audio and dynamic, but I get the same issue. The pager only stores about a second then spots.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can increase the stored audio time with out the pager stopping the recording??

The board I have is going to be pulled from a working radio. The radio is a model 1.5 and currently has the latest firmware (R11.05.01) which was last programmed with the latest CPS (R11.01.01). It has a flashcode 9Q147E-31H6DD-7 with the following features. The UHF1 VHF board must be in a similar condition as the board I have and it too must be a pull from a working radio with the same firmware or with one not older than R08.
